- radu79, on 12/12/2007, -3/+31So what if it's an ad for Opera? Opera for desktop is free, yes?
I've seen millions of Wii and Apple and various game ads on the front page, not to mention Firefox news and updates.
Personally, I think Opera is great, even though it has some problems, like any other browser. - gamerjon, on 12/12/2007, -4/+31Opera + digg + tabs = a wandering information adventure like no other!
- metamorfoza, on 12/12/2007, -5/+26"You could replace "Opera" with "Firefox" everywhere in that article.."
and none would complain how did this reach the front page or how it is an ad. - amadeusdemarzi, on 12/12/2007, -0/+20Yes, it was written by someone who works at Opera, so yes, they will most certainly promote their browser.
What some of you need to look at though, is that they are also very specific in saying that an open web is the best web; not an Opera only proprietary web.
And yes, their products fit in that catagory in case you where wondering - xGOATx, on 12/12/2007, -1/+20I remember when I was Firefox fanboy of sorts. But it's hunger for resources made me ditch it for Opera...Opera is pretty "neat" to say the least, but not only is it a great browser for your computer but it totally rocks on my Pocket PC! I have used Opera Mobile which was cool though it seemed heavy, then I was told by a buddy to try Opera Mini. Opera Mini 4 is a nice change of pace compared to Pocket I.E, Minimo (Firefox for mobiles) and Thunderhawk.
Opera is blowing them away! - chrisdavidmills, on 12/12/2007, -0/+16Hi all - it was written by me - thanks for all the support. I'd also like to give a message out to the article's detractors - OK, so I work for Opera, so I am obviously biased, but the main message I wanted to put across is that one web, and open standards are the best way to make the web better for everyone...and of course I believe that Opera browsers are the best browsers to use for viewing this one web ;-)
But of course, you can feel free to use any standards compliant browser available. I have a great deal of respect for most browsers out there... - FyberOptic, on 12/12/2007, -1/+13Actually, you can't substitute "Firefox" for "Opera", because it's not as standards-compliant as Opera is. It's one of the biggest reasons many pages didn't always display properly in Opera over the years. Mozilla on the other hand is about like Microsoft, adding proprietary features and properties for things which don't follow standards. The only reason theirs don't catch on is because it's not popular enough for anyone to risk alienating visitors by having a broken site that only works in one browser.
Opera has UserJS these days, including a master "fix" file which the browser automatically updates, making various websites that are still coded improperly to display in Opera as they should. It's also possible for people to write their own UserJS scripts, either to fix problems in that manner, or to add in extra functionality, even. Website compatibility can still be a problem, but 99% of the time it's because the developers of a site suck at their job. Following standards will almost always result in a site working properly across the board. There will still be little issues from time to time, but it's nothing a decent developer can't implement some workarounds for.
But again, as far as standards go, Opera is still the most compliant, and has been for years. - Bleeding_Heart, on 12/12/2007, -2/+14http://my.opera.com/BleedingHeart/blog/2007/07/15/ ... (Filter List)

The underdog always deserves a chance to be heard. Too bad Firefox doesn't know what innovation means. - WOFall, on 12/12/2007, -0/+8And soon Opera 9.5.
Even if you tried a previous version of Opera, try it again... Many new features have been added, not to mention the improvements in rendering!
http://www.opera.com/products/desktop/next/ - Exploit, on 12/12/2007, -0/+6I don't work for Opera. But I'm biased too. Dugg!
- xevidentx, on 12/12/2007, -0/+6opera is the one browser to rule them all
- johnnysaucepn, on 12/12/2007, -0/+5It's not an advert for Opera - it's an advert for Opera's principles. A rallying call for the web, if you like.
- rmd34, on 12/12/2007, -0/+4Flock decides which social network to support. It's no different from the AOL browser that only links to AOL sites. While both browsers have strong usability for their intended goals - give me a browser that empowers the end-user not 3rd-party companies with any number of 3rd-party deals.
- chrisdavidmills, on 12/13/2007, -0/+4A fantastically trollish comment if ever there was one. I use Opera all the time, and very rarely come across any sites that don't work...except my bank, but that's cos they use a stupid browser sniffing routine that arbitrarily locks you out if you're not running IE or FF, even though Opera would run it fine from what we can tell.
- melonhedd, on 12/12/2007, -2/+6Who the ***** uses flock??
- commentbot, on 12/12/2007, -0/+3You just have to import a .css file with the set of rules. It's done only once after installation. I'm lazy but I still can do it.

www.opera.com - McKain, on 12/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, their ad blocking is pretty slipshod, but one pretty thorough solution I've found is an Ad Blocker stylesheet, I've rarely had any problems with it, though it may block some flash you -do- want (one such case in my experience is Desktop Tower Defence on Kongregate, though anywhere else too).
Anyway, theres more info on blocking ads in Opera here: http://operawiki.info/BlockAdvertisements
And come on guys, don't thumbs down this guy, he's making a valid point unlike some other guys here, I can see there's lots of fanboyism going on here, so get off your high horses and be nice to potential users >=[ - kalphegor, on 12/12/2007, -0/+3What's sarcasm, actually?

Flock has tabs...
And has added features with Digg... And magnolia... Del.ico.us.... and Face Book... And Live Journal... A Flickr... And Photobucket...
Go figure. - artgon, on 12/12/2007, -13/+3The one real hangup preventing me from switching to Opera is the lack of an ad blocker. (Yes I know you can do it manually in Opera 9 but that's just a hassel)
- NathanielJ, on 12/12/2007, -13/+3"...not to mention Firefox news and updates."
Keywords being "news" and "updates", something that this article is sorely lacking. - noahhoward, on 12/12/2007, -25/+4Sorry, there maybe some useful information but in the end, this is a product advertisement, it is not news and it is buried as spam. Gain some respect by making your point without billing yourself as the only solution.
- JasonCox, on 12/12/2007, -29/+4Buried as 'how the hell did this get on the frontpage'?
- NathanielJ, on 12/12/2007, -34/+4How on Earth did this hit the front page? It's nothing but an advertisement for Opera. You could replace "Opera" with "Firefox" everywhere in that article, and it would be just as (if not more) valid.
