- rocke86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+33Great Clone, runs well in the vmware player. Boots really fast and has a lot less overhead than xp, still could use a lot of work to become more usable. Cool OS!
- junner518, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27i guess theres no genuine validation
- joel2127, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26This is an awesome piece of work. I really home this gets dugg to the front page - these guys have done almost the impossible. Still needs work, but with more support it could change things.
- onwardknave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Dugg, if for nothing else than it plays Deus Ex without Windows.
- grapfx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16a 15 mb file, come on. clicky teh link, it doesn't bite.
- chevy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15"out of personal dislike for the company you'd rather not use it?"
I honestly don't dislike MS, but when I had to turn on that GWA junk a couple weeks ago to get the latest updates I just about hit my irritation threshold with them. You don't have to be a rabid anti-MS fanboy to wish there was an alternative to dealing with them. - innerspirit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15@tempusrob:
reactos is not linux based... its a clone of the NT kernel and OS - pigphucker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15whatever happened to the copyright issues that came up a while back?
- Quactaur, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13On the main page, that's what the "audit" bit is for. They freeze individual parts of the code, and look through the source code to make sure none of it was lifted from Microsoft/proprietary sources. Its almost (~89%) done now, and bits of the project that aren't being inspected can be updated, hence the new release.
- cgranade, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13@tapo: While it is true that Wine and ReactOS share a codebase, the compatability list is not exactly the same for both. It can sometimes be easier to write a driver or API from scratch than try to convert it to the Linux API, and visa versa.
- Ratteler, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Yes. I would pay money to people who innovate over those who try use their monopoly in order to sell out my privacy.
- waynejkruse10, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Yeah, I defenantly think this project can go a long way with a little bit of cash and some support. Ill see what I can donate as well. :-)
- waynejkruse10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I just downloaded the live cd and put on a RW disc (damn useful for OS experimentation). It booted fine on my main PC. Mouse didnt work but that didnt matter as my mouse isnt a standard one. Navigated a bit with the KB and its very nice. Its speedy and defenantly has a lot of potential. If they can get it to run Windows programs and use Windows drivers flawlessly (or close to) it will be an amazing OS as its free, speedy and has driver and software support.
- johnboyholmes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Parts of it work. Web browsing, email, IM, IRC, FTP, but from what I know samba is still under development.
Great work so far though! - Quactaur, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10But it proves it can run DX. Also, it doesn't matter if it won't run vista, as Vista has nothing new in terms of functionality required to run programs, aside from DX10 (which can be converted, if DX9 can) and however programs interface with DWM. It's still NT, so its not going to be drastically different.
- Ryan001, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Great idea and I hope this project continues their efforts. This is a solution that I could see doing very well for people like myself. I have 3 Apple computers used for work but I built an SLI rig this year for gaming. If we could get an opensource alternative that would run all the current games I would donate/pay just so I don't have to deal with MS.
- node3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@kyriakos
You state that as though there's something wrong with it, as though the consumer should not be able to have preferences and choices. - tapo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13Well, ReactOS uses WINE, so yes. All of them.
- Zoasterboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8So, I have a question, this runs EXEs?
- mattprice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Yes, but the title on this tells you exactly what it's about.
- kyriakos, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14 you would pay for reactOS but not to buy the real windows xp just because its made by microsoft. therefore you accept the fact that using their OS is a requirement for you but out of personal dislike for the company you'd rather not use it??
- innerspirit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10great! does this have networking support yet?
- Rosco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I wonder if you can browse your local hard drives using the Live CD version? If so, this would be a kick ass alternative to Knoppix to keep around in case your main OS gets hosed and you need to recover valuable data.
- semaja2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Its actually very like windows even the installer is almost idetical at the first load of all the system files for install
- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7You, sir, are a ***** idiot.
The Win32 API is standard. XP can still run Windows software from the 95 days. I know, because I have a few specialty applications built on those old codebases. - waynejkruse10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yes, it attempts to. Works for a lot of things and doesnt work for a lot of things. Has Windows driver support as well.
- Cheeseness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6If the Vista uptake isn't fast enough (and the costs involved - which extends far beyond the purchase of the license - are going to make people hesitate before migrating), then a product like this could well gain enough momentum to grab quite a market share.
I think though, that you're missing the point a bit. What is it about Vista that you think will make this OS obsolete? Vista isn't running any new type of binaries that I'm aware of, so at the end of the day, all that Vista Only(tm) products will be requiring is a handful of libraries, which - as these guys have shown - it is possible to create open source alternatives for.
At the end of the day, it's probably worth remembering that most software which 'requires' XP to run runs perfectly on 2k without any problems. The installer just looks for the OS version in the registry (a 'clever' ploy to promote incessant upgrading). - DrFred, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6a) I am using windows and did not experice any significant bugs so far.
b) There is no such thing as Bug free god level software
c) Why would a OS have to be bug free to be cloned ? You do not have to clone the bugs in most cases.
d) The desgin is of NT is much more thought-out then Linux's - bob7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6It will be interesting to see how malware works here. I imagine that adware will still be a problem, but things like viruses won't. Since ReactOS duplicates the functionality of Windows, but still isn't coded in exactly the same way, it won't have the same security vulnerabilities, or be open to the same exploits.
It also seems that since it isn't nearly as large or complex, it should be harder for vulnerabilities / bugs to arise, and easier to catch them. - M2Ys4U, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5ReactOS are using clean-room reverse engineering... they aren't using ANY of microsoft's code.
- neko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Rosco
Here are some cybernetic modules. Do not squander them.
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/archive/index.php?t-102587.html (win2000launcher worked for me)
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69958&page=26 (the enormous catch-all thread) - cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13I believe its been done a couple of times before, but it is still a cool project.
Too big to download at work, I'll have to grab it (and donate) from home later. - waynejkruse10, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Well of coarse you will get that with beta software and its not really a bad thing. That is what the 0.x signifies.
- DrFred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4ReactOS has problems with Virtual PC. Try VMware (Player) or Qemu.
- tempusrob, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8There doesn't appear to be, upon searching around a bit.
Though I'm sure they wouldn't mind if someone created/seeded a torrent. *hint hint* ;) - Cheeseness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you're interested in seeing this project reaching a stable phase, then your best course of action (as with almost any open source project) is to contribute.
(and that doesn't necessarily mean programming) - mookieXL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Im not sure. It surely works in Wine so i'd say it works in reactOS too
- DrFred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yes under qemu.
- pauldonnelly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@kyriakos
Maybe he just favors open-source software. Or maybe he suspects that a Windows clone's price would be reasonable. Or maybe he wants a minimal system, just enough to get the programs he needs running. There are plenty of reasons to favor a clone over Windows. There are also plenty of reasons to dislike Microsoft enough to choose another product. - neko, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5No, I see this slowly creeping into Microsoft's territory. They've abandoned all support for Win98, and there are still people who use it for one reason or another, but are left in the cold for security updates. ReactOS can take them in. Then, when all new .exes have a "if ( vistaNotRunning() ) { die }" block of code in them, they'll drop support for XP, and some people won't/can't upgrade to Vista, ReactOS 0.4 can scoop that crowd up.
Keep it up and Microsoft will start to wonder why they're not selling any "upgrade" licences anymore. - kyriakos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5do even people read the comments before the digg them down? its pathetic. you guys read the summary of an article and digg it, and then read the first 2-3 words from a comment and figure out if it suits you or not. at least READ the damn article first then digg, and then comment.
tempusrob was not saying that ReactOS was based on a linux kernel all he was saying is that if they went out and built windows interface clone (and clone means THE SAME) over a linux kernel it would boost linux sales/downloads cause no matter how better the linux kernel is people dont feel at home when using it even if it has a better user interface cause non-geeks out there are used to it.
I hope someone reads what I just wrote before they decide if they should digg this comment out or not. - M2Ys4U, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Considering it's at 0.3 RC1, it's not suprising
- pauldonnelly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's not Linux.
- frik85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You can browse through FAT(16/32) partitions (read/write support). In ReactOS 0.3.1 you will be able to use also Ext2, ReiserFS, etc.
- Snuffkin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5One day, years and years from now, this is going to sneak up behind Microsoft and stab them in the back.
- jdonner, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"One day, years and years from now, this is going to sneak up behind Microsoft and stab them in the back."
Digg for dumbest comment I've read on Digg.com in a long, long time. - mos6507, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think this is an excellent project to eliminate the Microsoft Tax(tm). I think what is beneficial for society in the long run is for there to be one standard operating system and for that OS to be free. If that had happened, then Microsoft never would have become the dangerous behemoth it is today. Now that there is such a huge library of software for the PC, then if there ever is to be one standard free OS, then it has to be able to run Windows software directly without having to buy a Windows license.
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Tried it already. BSODs on boot on Virtual PC unfortunately. Fixed that, it just works now. Still, when it's actually stable, it will be nice. Will that ever happen?
- larsenm5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3well, dosbox works as a dos replacement. Why not have a windows replacement? It would be excellent if this works, anything to prevent giving lots of moolah to MS. What would make me laugh, however, is if it can run all MS programs but 10X faster with a smaller footprint!
- sembetu, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Okay, how about this:
You are able to do all your development on one machine. You get a great Mac machine, run React OS with Boot Camp or Parrallels, and then you run a Virtual PC Linux Box for good measure. The best of all worlds, without re-booting, and you only have to own one machine, one license, one primary OS.
I have been following React for a while now, and as a web designer, I am pretty excited about the possibility of having a true all-in-one-box solution. -
