- rhysboy84, on 02/19/2009, -5/+408Things that OpenOffice.org can do:-
1. Edit two or more parts of a document at the same time
2. Use OpenOffice.org to open legacy documents
3. Play a vintage Space Invaders game.
4. Turn off the blinking light bulb.
5. Save files in Office formats by default.
6. Automate actions easily
7. Fix single quotes.
Things PCMag.com can't do.
1. Put all their content on one page - CressCrowbits, on 02/19/2009, -17/+77Things OpenOffice can't do:
1. Be usable for any really critical spreadsheet work.
There are some great features in OpenOffice, and the fact it is free-free is a definite plus, but having used Calc for some mission-critical work and have it randomly mess up certain cells when copying and pasting large amounts of formulae, or breaking formatting, denying certain fonts existed that it had open in that very sheet, and having to give it to a colleague who still had Excel 97 on their aging computer to fix it whenever this happens ... makes me worried for the credibility of open source. - jamesdew, on 02/19/2009, -3/+62ye next he'll be wanting a pretty girlfriend.
- Trekhawk, on 02/19/2009, -10/+60Pretty. Ugly. OO is free. That's more important to a college student.
- nobogeys217, on 02/18/2009, -48/+94I just like the looks of Office '07. If MS Office wasn't so damn pretty, I would use OpenOffice more
- IHaveIssues, on 02/19/2009, -21/+64Goona digg it because I'm a big fan of OOo; I recommend it to people all the time to save them $400.
- TheDreadDiggerD, on 02/19/2009, -5/+44Do you know how much ramen $30 can buy?
- inactive, on 02/19/2009, -9/+45***** you, don't tell me what i didn't know.
- iffypop, on 02/19/2009, -19/+48OpenOffice is more like '100 things you thought you should be able to do, but what? you cant?'
- DomZy, on 02/19/2009, -3/+32Except the fact that it's a war in the stars?
- jakash, on 02/19/2009, -5/+32Space Invaders has NOTHING to do with Star Wars :@ grrr
- GliTCH82, on 02/19/2009, -4/+30Other things PCMag.com couldn't do:
2. Suck less. - srg13, on 02/19/2009, -0/+26Would you seriously use Access for a website?
- troub, on 02/19/2009, -0/+24No kidding. SQLServer Express, OR MySQL, are both free and will actually not make your website visitors hate you.
- Pother, on 02/19/2009, -3/+24I use it, which is why I'm going to add one thing you CAN'T do...
Use its database (supposed Access competitor) for any software development outside of OOo.
Meaning I CAN NOT use the OOo DB for a Website, a Java program, a .NET program, nothing... why?
Because (based on my research of 2 nights ago) there's no ODBC driver for it, nothing.
They made sure OOo could connect to everything, but left off the enabling of everything to connect to it.
If someone can point me in the direction of a usable ODBC driver for it, please let me know.
Thanks. - kent1146, on 02/19/2009, -6/+27Moving to another technology for your business makes sense if you can justify it in terms of money/time saved, or business capabilities gained.
Moving to another technology to "stick it to MS" proves why you're not making decisions for your business. - level32, on 02/19/2009, -1/+228. save csv files in UTF-8 (Excel still can't do this)
- Jektal, on 02/19/2009, -0/+21You should never use any "Office" Database as the back-end for anything anyway! Get yourself MySQL (it's free too) and use that as the actual database, then use whatever Office app you want with the MySQL ODBC driver for your friendly data entry.
- IHaveIssues, on 02/19/2009, -5/+25***** off.
- Sogui, on 02/19/2009, -10/+30Most colleges offer office dirt cheap.
I got 07 when it first came out for $30 - sruffelman, on 02/18/2009, -1/+21We thought we had beat the system in middle school when we played that game during science lab.
- blackpen2008, on 02/19/2009, -3/+23you can also save in the pdf format
- jakash, on 02/19/2009, -23/+42If your looking for pretty, looks like you should go out and get yourself a Mac.
- proverbs17, on 02/19/2009, -2/+21It also works on Windows, OSX, and Linux
- ChinaLumberjack, on 02/19/2009, -1/+18Or office productivity.
- Asrrin29, on 02/19/2009, -1/+18The biggest reason I use OOo is for the math writer. I think it is far superior to anything MS has, and looks very similar to LaTeX when printed out, but doesn't have the steep learning curve associated with it. If I need to do a scientific report and make it look nice, I skip on MS and use OOo.
- inactive, on 02/18/2009, -3/+18That game reminds me of the Excel flight simulator they had back in Excel 97
- nlight, on 02/19/2009, -4/+18Except OpenOffice costs about $400 less
- EnderMB, on 02/19/2009, -9/+22As someone who has recently tried to contribute to the OpenOffice project I can safely say that it is struggling to compare to the might of MS Office. Let's face it, Office is a far greater product and despite the fact that it costs money it has improved significantly since its 2000 release and with the new version has a great UI that works (if you take 5 minutes to actually learn it).
I love the concept of OpenOffice, but it tries way too hard to be a stripped-down version of Office when some innovation is needed. I see no reason to use OpenOffice apart from platform choices and frugality. If you're a Windows user then Office is definitely the way to go. - PinkyTheWinky, on 02/19/2009, -1/+13But access is ***** and everyone who uses it for a application database backend should be shot.
- jmizzle7, on 02/19/2009, -1/+136) Record Macro feature was removed in the new Office. All macros now have to be manually programmed. Pretty useless for the average user or basic functions.
8) You're an idiot for proving that for $400, Office does the exact same thing as OO. - mithrasinvictus, on 02/19/2009, -5/+17What it can do: evaluate formulas that have 65,535 as the outcome.
- danwallace, on 02/19/2009, -0/+12Nor is it a "1990s-era shoot-'em-up". The game came out in the 70's for christ's sake.
- AtomicTheory, on 02/19/2009, -0/+12Really? I think they could suck a lot less.
- DarkStryke, on 02/19/2009, -11/+22At the most Office 2007 costs $150 for a normal person. Odds are if you work at any type of large business you can get the home use program with Enterprise edition for $30. If you're a college / uni student you get ultimate for $60 or $70.
The only thing OO.o has going for it, is the price. It's worse then Office 07 in every other way. - BuddingMonkey, on 02/19/2009, -2/+13How is turning off the blinking lightbulb something that I couldn't figure out?
- elfprince13, on 02/19/2009, -18/+29that's hilarious. Most people I know switched to OO.o because they found using Office '07 so annoying.
- buddyw, on 02/19/2009, -0/+10Comma separated pharmacy files
- DomZy, on 02/19/2009, -0/+10He wants the other way around
- GreatSunJester, on 02/19/2009, -2/+12I use Open Office on my personal machine. BUT ... if you are a US student, Microsoft does offer a deal that is hard to beat (if you want MS Office)
http://www.microsoft.com/student/discounts/theulti ...
60 bucks gets you Office Ultimate. - FKnight, on 02/19/2009, -1/+10Except that it's not. Space Invaders involves aliens *invading* Earth.
- poihead, on 02/19/2009, -3/+12Good tips!
To offer a counter view to some general negative comments above, I made the switch to OO last year. So far, I have I have been able to do everything I was able to do before with MS office. I am a grad student that relies very heavily on writer and calc applications, most of the time requiring the use of slightly advanced features (e.g. pivot tables, filters, etc.). It is true I have had several frustrating moments with OO, but who never had those with MS office? I really think OO is good enough for %99 of MS office users out there... - DemDude, on 02/19/2009, -2/+11@Lith25: You're an idiot.
- Stonekeeper, on 02/19/2009, -0/+9The thing that is awesome with OOo is ldap integration. Not only can you hook it up to an LDAP tree, you can save different filters too. So you can click on a saved search, create a document and email it to all of them. Or if you wanted to you could make PDF addressbooks etc.
The last time i deal with office/ldap integration was outlook. It wasn't pretty. Microsoft quite ovbiously don't want you connecting to LDAP but want you to buy exchange. - MrTea, on 02/19/2009, -0/+9I would love to make a complete switch to OOo, but I'm addicted to office 2007's bibliography feature!
Anyone else feel the same? - inactive, on 02/19/2009, -2/+11I suppose its less aggressive than a paper clip smashing against your expensive LCD.
- mithrasinvictus, on 02/19/2009, -1/+9If you want to do the things 99% of office suite users do, either will work fine.
- PhillyOC, on 02/19/2009, -5/+13Because if you use OO you are typically so confused you don't even see it?
- inactive, on 02/19/2009, -0/+8But access is limited considerably. It does have an upper limit that any pro DB breezes through..
- PhillyOC, on 02/19/2009, -4/+12I can get Office Professional through school for $60 and Office Home and Student for $30.
