- kyleforeman, on 10/11/2008, -7/+98What a great program. Keep up the good work guys.
- plumcider, on 10/10/2008, -8/+38Got it this morning. However, since I only use it for the word processing capabilities, I tend to prefer Abiword. Fewer bells and whistles, lacks the customization, but is much more casual-user friendly.
- mvent2, on 10/11/2008, -6/+33Wonderful, I'll just get Office 2007 for Linux then...
Also, what if we don't feel like illegal pirating, for non-open-standards-compliant document formats? - ArthurSucks, on 10/11/2008, -1/+27It's a touch bigger than I'd like it to be, but it's a lot faster than version 2 was. They OpenOffice developers have done an amazing job.
- chrgra, on 10/11/2008, -11/+31I love Open Office. After using it, I feel like MS Office, esp. 07 version, is a waste of money.
- trogdoor, on 10/11/2008, -1/+20The only reason anyone needs instructions is because the author of this article didn't provide a link to the .deb file. Once it's actually released all that one will have to do is download the .deb file from http://download.openoffice.org/ and double click it.
- jvincent08, on 10/11/2008, -2/+20Since when is stating one's opinion advertising?
- zerodaysoon, on 10/11/2008, -1/+18i had trouble installing it under vista, i had to disable DEP to get it working, even then, it gave me problems, but after trying 3 times to install it went through. I have no idea why it did that. It does load faster than 2.4 and im not using the quicklaunch. but congrats to the Open Office developers for saving me money :-)
- benplaut, on 10/11/2008, -0/+14Everything you said, except we aren't being sarcastic trolls.
- trogdoor, on 10/11/2008, -2/+13Download the ( redundantly* ) compressed .deb file from http://download.openoffice.org/680/
Double click the file and extract the .deb to your desktop, double click the .deb file to install.
* .deb files are already compressed, I have no idea why they decided to compress it again and add an extra step for the user - expert01, on 10/11/2008, -2/+12Read the article *****.
"ahead of the official announcement Monday 13"
"Release notes have yet to be updated from Release Candidate 4" - palehorse864, on 10/11/2008, -3/+13It's getting better. I still wish it was as easy on the eyes as Word 2007. Writing long documents is bad enough, but the soft look of Word helps. They also need some of the review features and other such things.
Darkroom is also a good option. Simple and easy on the eyes, but threadbare on features. Still, it has autosave and that's all I really need from it. - chazuk, on 10/11/2008, -2/+12Just like your comment?
- Adv1s, on 10/11/2008, -0/+9Looking forward to seeing all the OpenOffice.org 3 vs Office 2007 articles; will be very interesting to see where the big differences between the two big office suites are these days.
- Asrrin29, on 10/11/2008, -0/+9The thing I use OOo for the most is drafting research reports for my physics classes. OOo Math is invaluable for pretty printing math formulas and I have impressed many professors including them in my reports. It's a shame the only other way I've found to do equation formatting is with the difficult to use LaTeX. I use OOo over MS Office because of the Math program.
- chazuk, on 10/11/2008, -1/+10Is Open Office Aqua final as well?
I'm getting it from here: http://openoffice.cs.utah.edu/stable/3.0.0/
I assume its out of beta being in the "stable" folder? - tbredofsin, on 10/11/2008, -7/+16Hoping it's a little faster and less buggy than 2.x.x. I use Writer exclusively because it supports so many formats and does the job just as well as Word, but I will admit that it's a little slow for my taste, and I've run into annoyances here and there.
- wastern, on 10/11/2008, -4/+13isn't this story nothing more then an OO.o advert. Whats wrong with people knowing what other options are out there
- madmanrob, on 10/11/2008, -10/+19i like the idea behind openoffice and everything but...compared to microsoft office 07, its ugly as hell
- stinkerweed999, on 10/11/2008, -1/+9UBUNTU INSTALL

Just did this and it works great on my 8.04.1 amd64 system. - Eisen4, on 10/11/2008, -3/+10Screw the story. Direct link please
- scabbers, on 10/11/2008, -1/+8Did they get the grammar check working I would definitely try it if they get the grammar check working because grammar is quite important don't you think well I do anyway.
- Cl1mh4224rd, on 10/11/2008, -1/+8> "Or rather, doesn't save odt files."
Uhh... yes it does.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AbiWord#File_formats - inactive, on 10/11/2008, -1/+7Its a bit more than just a word processor
- inactive, on 10/11/2008, -0/+6Same here, I would appreciate a release where they focus on performance issues ONLY. It would be great.
- SeraphX, on 10/11/2008, -0/+6Run-on sentence, you mean.
- AzureRise, on 10/11/2008, -2/+7I'll just wait for Ubuntu to automatically update it.

openoffice 3 PPA intredpid only there may be one for hardy somewhere too lazy too look this is the first thing i got on google. - LilRabbitFooFoo, on 10/11/2008, -11/+16Gotta love needing installation instructions in a blog for a full application release...ahem.
- chazuk, on 10/11/2008, -0/+5It seems it is and its working fine on my iMac.
Lovely stuff! - pHr34kY, on 10/11/2008, -0/+5It will take 6 months to put it into an Official build. Intrepid is being released at the end of the month with OOo2.4. There were discussions about whether it was going to be stable on time, and they decided it wouldn't be - I guess they were wrong.
However, it might show up in the backports repository pretty soon. - thecheatah, on 10/11/2008, -6/+11ANyone got it to install under ubuntu. If so let me know.
- KyleGoetz, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4As someone who works in word processing with groups of people (I'm an editor for an academic journal), OOo needs to improve their note handling and mail merge and other things like that. I would love to use OOo on my end, but because of these features that are highly important to me, when it comes time to collaborate with people, it takes a back seat to Word, unfortunately.
- expert01, on 10/11/2008, -4/+8Anyone know if it has better Word compatibility regarding tables? If I make some complicated tables on OO (mostly rotated text causes problems) and save it in Word 2003 format it kills everything, totally butchers the document.
- simpleboy, on 10/11/2008, -4/+8One of my friends (the guy from quicktweaks.com) got it under Ubuntu. He send me a screenshot and informed me that he is covering the installation instruction on his blog. so keep an eye.
- weeFred, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4I think they will include it in 8.10 now that it has been released. If they don't I'll be disappointed.
- backslashdigg, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4Mirror (of download not article): http://openofficeorg.secsup.org/stable/3.0.0/
All ready downloaded. Faster than 2.4 and I'm glad they didn't go with a MSOffice 07 UI. - WafflesID, on 10/11/2008, -1/+5Way to support your opinion with examples and evidence.
you must be a McCain supporter - harrisos, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4Likewise, I use OO for the equation editor - we just covered the RSA and DES algorithms, and the equation editor came in really handy.
If you use the cmr10 font and export the document as a PDF it looks like you created it with TeX too. Saves me from fiddling with TeX code, and when integrated with Zotero+Firefox it makes writing papers so much easier.
OO really has made my MS course a lot easier - for me it's the best word processor I've used since WordWorth on my Amiga. - nemodomi, on 10/11/2008, -0/+4"Looking forward to seeing all the OpenOffice.org 3 vs Office 2007 articles; will be very interesting to see where the big differences between the two big office suites are these days"
PURCHASE PRICE would be one big difference, I imagine. - mynameistux, on 10/11/2008, -1/+4It might take a few weeks.
- fuhrysteve, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3it won't be in 8.10 unfortunately -- at least not by default. they didn't meet the feature freeze, and from what it looks like, they aren't making any exceptions (this isn't a LTS like Hardy was).
Firefox 3.1 won't make it either (at least by default), but they just made an exception for Gimp 2.6, so that's good news! - srturner47, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3KyleGoetz -- I believe that 3.0 does improve note handling, so check it out! Here is some info on the new features:
http://marketing.openoffice.org/3.0/featurelistbet ...
And yes, I agree, open office is a fine program, but it needs to be optimized for speed. Still, the enhancements with 3.0 look good! - ddfall, on 10/11/2008, -1/+4Direct Link (to direct downloads from mirror): http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/ny1.mirror.open ...
- uncoolcentral, on 10/11/2008, -1/+4FTFA - "The official list of download mirrors can be found here... Release notes have yet to be updated from Release Candidate 4." (So it's allegedly not officially released, but available, even if their news and other materials don't reflect it yet.)
- trogdoor, on 10/11/2008, -0/+35.2 MB
- enterneo, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3still same old interface, I am disappointed
- stmiller, on 10/11/2008, -2/+5There's a PPA:
https://launchpad.net/%7Eopenoffice-pkgs/+archive - macaholic, on 10/11/2008, -0/+3For 64-bit debian-based distros it is.
