- floor-9.com, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That is an ugly ad. And while it's true that sometimes people will remember what they hate, I think the problem here is that an ad like this will get tuned out with all the other obnoxious ads we're all subjected to daily. This thing reads like an X10 ad ... and when was the last time you bought something from X10?
Yes, I know someone will point out that X10 is well-known, partly because their ads are awful. But they're not well-known in a good way, and I don't think that being categorized as gimmicky is going to do OO any good right now.
Also, I don't think the "OMG FREE + FIGHT TEH POWAR" theme is going to do well. What group are you targetting? CEOs? IT Directors? Homemakers? Anyone with an Internet connection? This ad doesn't speak to any of them. - floor-9.com, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4From my post on Fark, here's a suggestion. Simple, effective, and to the point. In a large, friendly font across the type, insert a headline like "Introducing the fully-free, fully-Office-compatible Office:". Add the OpenOffice logo at full page width. Insert a blurb of text in a smaller font -- no more than three sentences -- to the effect of "Create and edit Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, and Powerpoint presentations with ease. Now available for Windows and OS X. What are you still paying for?". Insert, in a big font at full page width, "www.openoffice.org".
You could add visual flair by putting shrunken screen caps in a light grey behind the paragraph text. Sure, they won't be clear images of OO action, but the goal here is action, not education; users seeking education on OO can download it and try it themselves.
As people have pointed out on other sites (Slashdot, etc), OO really needs to improve their website. Will the average entry-level user know what a "mirror" is? Unlikely. If you're not going after the entry level user, and trying to stick to the tech-savvy crowd, then this ad really isn't necessary as there's a good chance they're already aware of OO. - machx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1thats a horrible ad and just looks like someone created it in 10 minutes on MS Paint. Seriously they need something with the OpenOffice icon and a decent quality screenshot, maybe a bit opaque with some text explaning how good OpenOffice is and that it's free and where to download it. Simple and Effective
- einfeldt, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Vandy, what don't you like about it?
Also, the point of advertising is not necessarily to be attractive in all instances. It is orthodoxy in advertising that people will sometimes also REMEMBER what they don't like. I didn't design the ad, so I don't have a personal stake in this ad. But I would personally like to see it succeed, and so I would like to see as much detailed commenting as possible on the good, the bad, and the ugly aspects of this ad.
