- meshman, on 10/12/2007, -11/+14Storage 2.0? Jesus H. Christ. Now we'll have the "Big Mac 2.0" and the Web 2.0 movie and Web 2.0 action figures (whatever the hell that would be). We'll have Calvin Klein 2.0 jeans and the Gap 2.0 and "Web 2.0, the scent" and in 2008 they'll elect President 2.0 to govern America 2.0. Thanks. Thanks a lot. IT'll take years to undo the damage this is going to cause.
- jalagl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I use AMD Live! Media Vault: http://amd.streamload.com/
25GBs, free (they do cap your downloads), and their web-based interface works great. You can also pay for more features/space/download cap/etc if necessary. Their Windows click sucks, though. - popothebright, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Yawn.
X-Drive did it 10 years ago now.
Has the slickest system.
And OS integration (Drive X: on your machine).
And was bought by AOL so they're not a fly-by-night outfit.
... and oh yeah, they offer 5 Gigs free which is 5x more than the competition.

- sych0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I don't know... these services are good in premise, but until theres an efficient way to upload 250gb, they're all useless to me. Home videos and RAW photos take up a lot of space :(
- JTURNERNZ, on 01/22/2008, -0/+3I have been using dropboks.com for about 6months now, and i Highly Recommend it for the people that love a clean, simple , ad-free!, and becoming feature rich, all on one page, on a secure connect type of service.
- larfus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Amazon Simple Storage Service is not a bad deal either.

Don't worry. It'll be fixed just in time for Web 3.0. - DonCarcharo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've been searching for an affordable way to back up my design files offsite and I haven't found it yet. MediaMax seemed like the best option since they're one of the few that actually offer large scale storage. I signed up for one of their deluxe accounts and used it for about two months before ditching it. The problem is my files would randomly disappear, FTP support (my main way to upload files) was abysmal since you couldn't actually see what you've uploaded nor can you download at all via FTP.
I'll make sure to investigate all the linked options in the article but if they're like most online services, 5GB equals backup. That doesn't cut it for designers. :( - VarianX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If you're looking for just space: http://www.MediaFire.com

(I'm not affiliated, just passing on the good word) - jayhawk88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here's a question for Diggers: Anyone know of a system sort of like these that might specialize in offering an upload opportunity to other people? For example, say I have someone who is going to be making a presentation at my place of business, and he has a 20meg Powerpoint or whatever. Unfortunately my email system has a 10meg attachment limit.
What I'd really like to be able to do is have a page/system where I could send the user a link to my site, along with perhaps a simple/temporary login and instructions, that will allow him to upload the file to my site where I can then retrieve it. Ideally it would allow me to create a temp login that I could later disable when the presenter is done. - asssa3000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Check also "Online Storage Services with Free Account Option"

Sure it costs $50 a year but I haven't found anything better. - Logik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use StrongSpace.com with rsync to do my backups.. 100gig for life... I'm a Joyent Core Premier for lifer. Neat thing about Joyent is that you can buy TextDrive hosting, or StrongSpace backups, or Joyent Connector and get the other two plans for each service free. Check it out.. great hosting, great backups, great collaboration application.

http://www.social-media-optimizations.com - YourTechSupport, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1DropBoks rules. I still carry my stickdrive, but when I need to set stuff between computers remotely, this site kicks ass. Simple
- javasharp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Try http://www.divshare.com, they have an unloader plug in for wordpress
- kenplaysviola, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3What about http://www.mozy.com ? Free version is 2GB, but $5/month gets you UNLIMITED storage that can be retrieved securely over SSL using a web browser, or using their Mozy client.
- Jerky1312, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is no way they can check what you are uploading? Is there anything that these sites can do stop people from uploading copyrighted music, movies, software, etc. on to their systems?
Also, maybe its just me, but unless they over at least 5 gb of space and up, it would seems much more easier to simply put said files on to a flash drive and carry it around where you go in your pocket. No singing up and waiting for uploads, etc. I realize the services are free, but flash drives are not that expensive for the simplicity and ease of use. - sharp357, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Or 5X less than mediamax (25gb) depending on how you do math. DUH
- ghelton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Why not just get 100GB for $20 a month over at MediaTemple. I mean you've got storrage and a hosting server to boot. I do that, I dont know about you guys but I trust them more than these startups especially the ones who give their service away, advertisings only a good business model till the advertisers go elsewhere.
- JSolo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've been a Box.net customer for a while now and I absolutely love them. The drag and drop flash widget simply owns and their speeds are fantastic. Two big thumbs up for Box.net.
- sheadunn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1For the record, MediaMax was a horrible experience for me. I signed up with it and paid for more storage, but i had nothing but problems. The uploads didn't work half of the time, the service was inaccessible more often than it should have been, and when I tried to contact the company to resolve my issues, I never got a response. They have no telephone number to call, so I had to rely on email. No big deal, except I tried 5 different times to contact them for help, and I got nothing back. In addition, that was the only way they would let someone cancel an account, and again I got no response. I got charged 2 months more than I wanted to pay, so finally I had to get a new credit card number instead, so I would at least stop getting charged.
I never had so many problems with anything except maybe trying to cancel an AOL account. Even that seemed to be easier.
That is just my experience. Hopefully everyone else has had better luck than I did. - samuella, on 09/10/2008, -0/+0This article is pretty good but it misses out on some of the major players with the most innovations.

- ghelton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Im not quite sure what you mean by that but what I do is run FileNice to browse my folders in my storage directory and upload new files via FTP. http://www.filenice.com/
- YourTechSupport, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I use them for hosting. Are there any good installable web apps for our own servers like the ones mentioned here?
- Ozilla, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0This article is pretty good but it misses out on some of the major players with the most innovations. For example, file123.com provides a way to upload paper and digital files making both searchable by the text in the document. It's pretty amazing compared to these other systems. I have looked around for a good online storage system for a while. Check it out, you get a gig for free. htttp://www.file123.com
- aries185, on 11/11/2007, -0/+0For Web 2.0 Media Storage, I'd take a look at Nirvanix b/c they are smart with different types of media and can generate thumbnails, etc. - There's a good article here: http://mashable.com/2007/09/02/nirvanix

- iqula, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0My best is http://www.cosmopod.com they give you 1GB as well as an entire online desktop with open office and a whole bunch of apps all 100% free and all you need is a web browser!
- JasonKiddy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Yeah - my friend has been using Carbonite for ages now.
He swears by it.
It could do with a few more controls though. - radkiddo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I recommend Nomadisk, it can back up your data and also synchronize around multiple PCs. You can even work offline and configure a virtual network. The rest of the services mentioned are no match for Nomadisk. Check it out at: http://www.nomadisk.com
- Kussie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I like http://www.filefactory.com it's free if you want to upload files less 300mb (Thats a per file limit, no overall limit). They also offer a rewards program if your files get's downloaded often. Drag and drop support. Their own upload and download manager (if you want to use it), and the widgets are a very nice feature. I can upload all my music into folders and create an audio player widget for use in web pages or such which will then play the music.
They also don't actively look for copyrighted work. It is only removed when it reported by the person who owns it. - shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3-- no registration --
