- vermin, on 10/12/2007, -7/+49Looks like one of Microsoft's best products in a long time. No other office suite can put up much competition.
- AstroPHX, on 10/12/2007, -27/+64"Poop"? You decided that "poop" was a necessary comment? Good gravy; I can't believe you took the time to write that.
Here's an ever-slightly more insightful commentary about the Office'07 UI. Microsoft has greatly changed the paradigm of the toolbar in /only some/ of their Office products. Specifically speaking, the toolbar will now be context sensitive. So far, I'm not a big fan of the overall behavior. I don't know how I'll feel after using it for a year, but right now: thumbs down.
The real annoyance with the context sensitive toolbar is that MS can't (apparently) make up thier own mind if they like it or not. The functionality is there in Word, but not there in Publisher. Yeesh. It reminds me of how (the 2003 versions of) Excel behaves vs Word when you have multiple documents open. Word: you can look at two docs side-by-side. Excel? Not so much.
C'mon MS, change the design and stick with it. - pumacub, on 10/12/2007, -7/+40Have you even used it? It's the best Office suite I've ever used.
- RandomSkratch, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26Wow this looks...just like.. Office 2007 BETA.....
- loof, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21publisher, outlook, and onenote didn't get the ribbon system. I think it was because they didn't feel it would work well with those applications.
- CaptainMordecai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Been running the beta for ages on my XP machine with 512MB of ram. Runs just fine.
- thushan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18my my my... such negativity from someone who clearly hasnt used it:p
I've had the pleasure of using Office 2007 since pre-Beta 1 and I've been hooked on it ever since. To be perfectly honest with you I've learnt so much more about Word (something i hardly *EVER* touch apart from the odd Uni assignment - I'm purely an outlook guy) than I would have if I had done some crazy Office course. My work on the new Office looks and feels alot better, i'm making better use of styles and getting the eye-candy out of my documents, and trust me once you start playing with it you'll do the same.
WIth that UI the major bits and pieces of Office is right there infront of you. You'll tend to know where things are after you get used to using it (maybe a week?) but trust me once you use it you wont go back.
OpenOffice looks so much lamer after I started using O2007 full time. Heck the menu's and the UI trying to imitate Office 2003 is a jokable attempt. Free, Open Source but unusable and ridiciously high resource usage.... No Thanks:p
Next time enjourni before you bash a product, strap yourself into it and use it before you jump the gun. - dpower, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19I use Open Office myself, and in truth MS Office is a superior product. However, I don't need the level of sophistication MS provide. There was a day when I used Word a lot, and it's collaboration and editing tools couldn't be beaten. Horses for courses.
As a professional tool it looks good to me- I can see great improvements in the UI that might make life easier for someone who uses Word/Excel professionally.
Colours are fine too- for those of you complaining about the pastel colours, try working with bright garish colours 8 hours a day. On the face of it I'd say they did a good job.
Still, Open Office is just fine for my basic needs. - TheFinestShadow, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19I agree with this. I've also been using the beta version for a few weeks, and I really like it compared to 2000/XP. The UI is much nicer, although confusing for those of us used to 2000/XP.
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Err...
The ribbon is right there. It wasn't going to make it into every app for 2007, but it made it into the big players, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and Outlook has it when you send messages. - ioannusdeverani, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Google Office (Docs and Spreadsheets) and Microsoft Office are two completely different things, and must be used for completely different purposes. If Google Office were competing with Microsoft Office, to do what Microsoft does, they would lose.
Google's office suite is great for simple documents and online collaboration, but for complex, structured documents, Microsoft Office 2007 is the king. - DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Try using it, it works quite well.
UI consistency is overrated. You should design your interface to best suit the task at hand. If its the same task, it should behave/look the same, otherwise you shouldn't force it for the sake of consistency.
Office is a unique application, it needs a unique interface. The toolbar/common control paradign didn't work. - sahaskatta, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18it all looks good, but why does publisher, outlook, and onenote have the office 2003 theme? am i missing something?
- DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Office 2007 looks the same on XP.
- jdgtrplyr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15I love Paul Thurrott's site. I go to it at least once a week to check out all the latest with Microsoft. I think it looks great, can't wait to get a copy of it, Microsoft lives on as THE office suite. OpenOffice is great, but it still can't touch the longevity and superb programming of the Office suite.
- KnightCrawler, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Hope they fixed Outlook 2007, it was really slow in the beta version.
- sdrawkcaB, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Speaking of Beta, these screens look the exact same as my beta does...except whatever the hell Groove is, that wasn't in the beta. I do like the interface, and the suite as a whole has been hugely improved upon, with many new features and ones ones made better and more accessible. The UI is great, especially in Black.
- Bamborzled, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Now the beta expires March 2007 if you download the Technical Refresh.
- bbtrev, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Groove is a Peer to Peer collaboration tool. Basically users share a common workspace in which they can store any type of document without the need for a server. The encrypted workspace is delta replicated to each users' workspace whenever they are logged on and users are alerted to any changes/updates that are made.
It looks to be a potentially promising tool for large business. - Bamborzled, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11The paperclip isn't there anymore. (Yay!)
- umeshunni, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@MusicalGenius
That's the default wallpaper for Vista. - DigeratiPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8he should just use png. I doubt he needs to be so cheap on bandwidth, probably just ignorance.
- kasted, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9powerpoint looks way better (as of premade templates) and looks like there are some new features..
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8It picks up your theme color (which can be anything) in Vista.
- Celeron, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13You can download the beta off their site. The license expires 2/1/07.
I have been using the beta for a couple of months, but I prefer Office 2003. They moved everyone around, thus making it harder to find icons, etc. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10"Your paying 300 + for eye candy."
The word is "you're." You + are. "Your" means "belonging to you."
Perhaps you need the new grammar checker. Or just a third-grade education. - eleazar123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@KnightCrawler
I experienced the same slowness but when I updated to the Technical Refresh of Beta 2 the performance increased greatly. I would recommend that anyone experiencing slow Outlook performance to use the tech refresh. Just thought I'd share. - flippedcracker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9i've loved the 2007 beta since it came out. doesn't mean i'll spend money on it though.
- tendonut, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11That comment just sounds so uneducated. How much more GBs? Sounds like someone who knows jack ***** about computers attempting to sound like they know what they are talking about
Also, when I clicked on the link, I wasn't sure if I was looking at a PS3 article or an Office 2007 article. Way to market your stuff Sony! (*rolls eyes*) - Goatman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9the blues boring.... but the standard gray in all of OSX isn't?
- MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Yeah, the beta version of Outlook I have is definitely slower than it should be. That said, I love it and must have it!!
- kirupa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6You actually have the choice of Blue, Gray, or Black. You can change the colors easily.
- nunquam, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13The new program icons look terrible IMHO. The colour palate is too... pastel.
- darthmdh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You could say the same about all the Microsoft fanboys that have to come in and flood digg with insignificant Microsoft stories and talk smack on everything non-Microsoft. Or all the moonbats that have to come in and flood digg with insignificant moonbat stories, and so on and so forth. Even worse is when they digg or bury according to their agendas.
- Cymrubeats, on 10/12/2007, -9/+13I think being a complete moron (familiar with that concept at all? :-) ) would affect productivity and ability much more than a particular colour.
- thushan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5PNG...
- bedlam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@AstroPHX
You actually can view two separate excel documents side by side, it's just done differently than in Word. With Excel, you have to "restore down" the document inside of excel (not excel itself). Multiple documents will then appear in the excel window given you have multiple documents open.

and yeah it helps to have a dual monitor setup :) - GoneDigging, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Ive been using office 07 for 3 months now and vista for about a year office 07s pretty good
- Duston, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@cmdrNacho
Does OOo or Sun Office offer the integration, revisioning, and collaboration tools of Office 2007? Or 2003 for that matter?
Right, didn't think so. - Trevahaha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@KnightCrawler
I run the Office 2007 Beta (Tech Refresh) and don't feel it's slow at all... except sometimes switching back to my inbox in Outlook, it sorta takes a second rather than being instant. I agree that the first beta was sometimes laggy. Have you updated your copy? - hobbers, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Seriously. I hate how they have to change all the icons around just so it looks pretty and new. And change all the menus around because they think things fit better this way. And change where all the options are located because greek letters should be symbols now instead of a font. My work just switched to Office 2003, and I didn't even recognize the damn text tool in PowerPoint. My job is to do my job, not learn stupid new office suites just because MS feels they have to justify their new product by making it look different.
- longzheng, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Paul's compression is horrible. http://www.istartedsomething.com/20061106/astala-vista/
- uptown, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Bring on the Office 2003 deals....
- BlogJones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No, more people than you like it. It's just that the Digg ecosystem has a lot of penguin thumpers and Apple zealots who digg down positive comments about Microsoft.
I'm looking forward to the new Office interface. It looks a _lot_ better, especially for newer/inexperienced users (aka 90% of the market). - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have used the 2007 office beta for a while now, i must be the only one that likes the new system? i feel that everything runs more clean, and my options are very upfront, and not in tiny toolbar stretched across the screen. So far i like it, i think for most of its the "change" that is the problem. In time, im sure you will learn to like it because if your run windows at the office, you wont have a choice at some point =)
- Spo8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2After using the Beta for a while, I like it much better than the current Office. If your switching between functionalities, sure I can see how you would find the new ribbon a bet cumbersome, but the most used ones are nicely arranged on the default tab. I'm also a fan of the new, much more inviting and lighter interface. It's obvious that they've taken a page from OSX in terms of design, and I consider that a big step in the right direction.
- dustin551, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow. You are seriously reaching.
- pauldonnelly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@willy
At one time I would have agreed with you, but I've come to realize that floating windows work very well if you have a much larger desktop than you will ever need. Monitors don't come that big, but some window managers can simulate a huge virtual desktop. The #1 benefit is the ability to leave a window hanging off the screen but still be able to scroll over and see it without disturbing your work. - DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Office 2007 is quite nice but these screenshots suck. Someone needs to give Paul a crash-course in JPEG compression.
