- zofo, on 10/12/2007, -11/+45I've always hated Windows (I tolerate it because I have to) but have always loved Office... and it just keeps getting better
Looks like they finally used the MacOS MS Office team! - jcronkhite, on 10/12/2007, -8/+39I respect your input! Here, finally, an individual who is no fan of Windows, but has the balls to admit liking office! You clearly don't hate for hate's sake like the fan boys. I'd like to see more of this. Dibs to you bro!
- CadMasterAdam, on 10/12/2007, -10/+31slick
- phpirate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20I can't believe it, but Microsoft is actually heading in the right direction for once. They've actually come out to make something on their own... im rather surprised to say the least.
- sabster, on 10/12/2007, -13/+29Yes slick, but I have a feeling the memory usage is going to be going through the roof
- omenmedia, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18I think the most important issue here has been overlooked: what enhancements have they made to Clippy?
- Magadass, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Users are retards, seriously! Have you worked in an office environment lately? When it comes to anything on computers, you need to design it so a retard could use it. It amazes me when you say "Click the Start button" and the users responds "Where?", well maybe the button that says START! So luckily I dont work with users all that much, I have a "people person" that can stand in for me!! :)
- reaver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Looks very slick. Impressed that MS made something that looks visually nice.
- maverick001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Its time to crawl out from under your pet rock... and on your way out please grab a book on UI design.. I recommend "Norman".
Microsoft has got it totally right with Ribbon or dynamic toolbar or whatever you want to call it. - bscott86, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Link directly to the video: http://www.microsoft.com/office/preview/asx/OfficeUIIntro.asx
- Gottschalk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11That's bull *****. You can maybe argue that upgrades have not represented enough value but to pretend that the product hasn't meaningfully improved, even in terms of basic functioning, is just not correct.
- Ryetronics, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12It's working fine for me. You'll know it's working when you see Bill Gates younger clone talking to you.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11cuz if they changed it, NOBODY would know what the ***** it is. its been that way for YEARS and everyone knows what it is. what are you gonna change it to anyways? sure a floppy is outdated, so what do you want a picture of? a hard drive? tell your secretary to click the hard drive button to save it, what the hells she gonna do (not to sound sexist)
edit--fish beat me - mephitix, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Yeah, OpenOffice is nice in terms of features, but in terms of memory management it's HORRIBLE. OpenOffice 2 was supposed to be the killer app, but it's still the same functionality of Word except it takes up 100 megs of memory.
Also, it's not the "sexyness" that's in question here -- it's the usability/intuition of interaction. I admire the fact that developers do their research and take risks with interfaces like this. Who knows, maybe the whole "Ribbon" model of Office 2007 will be extremely intuitive and useful. - chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Looks pretty nice. Looks like it's a bit slow on the video though- as even changing the font takes more time than I would like.
Good job Microsoft, looks like all your hard work has not gone to waste.
Cheers- chicken. - diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Office 2007 makes Openoffice look like Wordpad
- furtwan1, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14this looks sexy as hell.
I used an older beta that was quite nice, but it's good to see they're making progress. - Ryetronics, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Give credit where credit is due. Sure, MS Office is expensive, but all Open Office does is copy what MS has already accomplished and call it their own under the guise of open source. I don't see Open Office making any major UI changes.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12hopefully the schoolboard will upgrade from '95 to this
i do have a feeling its not gonna happen though - jmthornsburg, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11I want to know why the "save" icon is still a damn floppy disk...
- Jozer99, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Um, a quick trip to a torrent tracker and a half hour wait will have it running on YOUR machine.
- Brian48216, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Wow, I'm surprised that there weren't cries of Microsoft raping and pillaging their village and that Office 2007 is the spawn of the devil.
But it's probably because the user interface redesign maybe is that good. - jcronkhite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7rtphokie->"Office hasn't offered me anything new since the first release"
Are you using Nintendo Office or something? WTF! You CAN'T be serious!!! - calero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7microsoft keeps scoring big, first with the 360 now this, makes me wonder how Vista will look when its shipped
- patrickweber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that it looked strikingly like Bill Gates.
- Sottozero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Very, very slick. Color me impressed.
I'm guessing the lag has everything to do with the fact that this is beta code and not GA. When it finally ships, I expect performance to be teh snappey. - cmer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6OpenOffice now 10 more years behind!
This is definately an awesome UI! Good work MS! - ricodued, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I've been running the new build for a couple weeks now, and I must say, it really is nice. I especially like Outlook, at the risk of omgz thundarbird 4 teh roolz posts. I like it. Word and everything else with the new UI "bands", or whatever they're called, are awesome. It's a great idea, and I'm glad they had the guts to try it rather than just stick with what they knew worked.
Only thing that bugs me is perhaps the title bars. I can understand why they did them the way they did, but, I don't know. Something about them...
First Office release I've used in a while that really feels like an upgrade. - jono1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Weird, to me he looked more like the Subway guy....
- vertigoblue, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7there isn't usually that much security built into beta software...
- nextsteposx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Glad to see Microsoft doing innovation.
Open Office and Pages look prehistoric against the UI of Office 2007.
This coming from a Mac user. - washley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I don't have any problems with streaming video. You need to get a better connection.
- Sababaaa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You are by definition one of the types of users that this new office is targeted to, the consumer who knows nothing about all the awesome abilities of office- and they plan on changing this by making these features easily accessible and prominent throughout the UI. The other main target is businesses, which are also filled with people such as yourself, who haven't been trained to use these programs to their full potential.
Bravo MS, that video actually impressed me. - Sottozero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5On my ThinkPad T60p, I use Word 2003 with no issues whatsoever. It's the best WP on the planet as far as I'm concerned.
On my Mac, I use Office 2004. It's good as well, but I prefer the Windows version.
Office is, has been, and always will be better on Windows, its native platform. - tileeater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah, I'm a pretty steadfast Microsoft basher but I have to say this looks like a very impressive overhaul. Sometimes even the mega-juggernaut does it right. I'm glad to see this.
- monketman, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13http://www.mininova.org/tor/262549
yes - smarusich, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7This is was Office should always have been.
- dbpigeon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This looks very good. I like the nice background behind the document/slide/whatever. The UI is beautiful, and I'd stop using OpenOffice just because of that, but also the nice functionality.
- Gottschalk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Whoa, you've pissed off the fat people.
- sembetu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4*Disclaimer* Self-professed former Windows fanboy, now born-again Mac disciple.
Very nice. This actually looks like a very solid product, and I can see it gaining wide acceptance from users and Enterprise. - gargomel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Looks fantastic. I hope it doesn't take too much getting used to. I've always liked working with MS Office, however many of the engineering labs at school have OpenOffice which I just can't seem to make work as smoothly when it comes to formatting. Office always seems to do what I want/need and if not doesn't take long to figure out whereas OpenOffice seems a bit cumbersome at times.
I like MS Office because it works for me. Period. - fishindiesea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4very true...but what else is that iconic? not zip disks for sure, and cd's would make people be like what?
they should have a 13,85(4?) dollar contest for that - xodex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That was a great presentation :)
- loeakaodas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've been in the beta since the beginning and it strikes me that they made a significant change in the UI between the current version and the previous one. Maybe they're experimenting with optional skins or just trying to see what will work better for people.
The features seem to have increased and one of my most favorite one in Word is the ability to insert Equations, I mean real equations (derivatives, limits, etc. in their original formatting), maybe it was available before, but now it's a lot easier and for some one who deals a lot with math this will make it a lot easier to make equations, I've tried other tools, but they were cumbersome and not as effective.
Overall I like what they have done and the Ribbon is mostly useful unless it switches to a different position when you don't need it to. The only drawback is that it's a little slow on the response as the video showed there is a little lag between when you hover over something and you see a result. Hopefully they would optimize it and fix that for the final release. Maybe they can make it use more memory to buffer the most commonly used options so they would show up quicker because as of now for a Beta product it doesn't use that much memory about 70 to 80 MB. - evilpettingzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm glad Microsoft is finally realizing that the office interface was due for a overhaul. Was it just me or did all previous office suites just seem like a rehash, the only difference with each version seemed to be harder to find menu commands.
- Dinosaurus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I would think Office is the most used word processor on the Mac, not counting Textedit of course. In fact the Mac users I know who use it really like it.
- patrickweber, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Nah, not R.I.P.. more like R.I.H: Rot in Hell.
- radixus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have to say, the new user interface for Office 2007 is very clean . . . . microsoft is beginning to learn how to do UI correctly, and make it look good. But at what risk though. I mean with this new eye candy in Office 2007, how much memory is this suite going to hog up?
It's looking good though. I'm very excited to see the finished product - if it ever gets released. - evlcookie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Looks nice.
Big icons that show you what's going to happen .. FTW!
I dont use office much these days, but this is a very nice improvement over previous versions.
Very slick. As many people have already mentioned. - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I was familiar with the features already, but what struck me was the marketing. It had an almost Apple feel to it. Say what you will about Microsoft, ahem, borrowing from other companies but this is one area where they have a lot to learn from their competitor. Developers talking directly to the end users and demonstrating real-world functionality in clear language. I half expected Steve Jobs to say "...and one more thing" at the end of it.
I think this is a smart move on Microsoft's part. I hope it's part of a legitimate trend for Microsoft to be more user-centered. -
