- kidblast, on 02/20/2009, -1/+200As a web designer, this is a fight I can get behind. Words can't express my hatred for IE6.
- raditsj, on 02/20/2009, -6/+133Norway FTW!
- bjorna, on 02/20/2009, -5/+97So I guess it takes some vikings in order to get rid of a plague
- rhysboy84, on 02/20/2009, -1/+82YES YES AND THRICE YES
I'm a big believer in web standards, and I'm sick of designing a website twice, one CSS for IE6, one for everything else.
Not sure what it will achieve though. - regression, on 02/20/2009, -10/+86Can US websites do this also? Can we declare war on all of the internet explorers?
- Elizabeth9, on 02/20/2009, -20/+88Firefox is the best!

- evilrevolution, on 02/20/2009, -0/+52do it for png's with transparency
- wobblejuice, on 02/20/2009, -1/+49we delete all IE icons from desktops. and rename the Firefox icon to "Internet Browser". Fixes a lot of problems.
- pepijn744, on 02/20/2009, -2/+46FINALLY!!!!! Please let IE6 die, gives me lot of free time
- victorycig, on 02/20/2009, -3/+46IE6 and 800x600 displays, too. I'm tired of "optimizing" my CSS.
- Elranzer, on 02/20/2009, -2/+40800x600... When I try to fix this on people's monitors, they complain the text is "too small."
- evilish, on 02/20/2009, -0/+32Awesome! I wish everyone could do the same.
I work for a large online department store and even though most mom's and pop's use IE7, theres still something close to 30% using IE6. That equals to thousands of people per month, which make me a very angry frustrated website designer.
Let IE6 die! - abrenna, on 02/20/2009, -0/+27Swedish Microsoft-managers supports the IE6-campaign:

http://stephanielindberg.wordpress.com/ - waydee, on 02/20/2009, -3/+28This is what is needed, you just need to flat out disallow IE6 users from accessing your website; gone are the days where this would be a suicidal move, at least half if not more of your visitors will be using IE7/Firefox/Chrome/Safari/Whatever these days in most cases.
It's the only way people will change. - drgirlfriend, on 02/20/2009, -0/+24My college still uses IE 6 :(
But we painted wax hands yesterday in the student center so it's okay. - Chewie67, on 02/20/2009, -1/+23Ironically, after the steady march towards larger and larger "standard" screen resolutions, the rise of the iPhone is making the testing for smaller screens more relevant again.
Now you really need to create a mobile version of your site in addition to a full sized version.
Out of the frying pan and in to the fire. - pakke, on 02/19/2009, -2/+23* html Freeedooom!

SEVERAL Norwegian websites?
CHECKMATE, IE6 - koshbaby, on 02/20/2009, -2/+22I take care of 12 computers in our small business and all of them run Windows 2000. Each and every one of them has been a hand-me-down from a larger company that was simply going to throw them away. By removing IE from the desktop, installing Firefox, forbidding unauthorized software installations and putting the whole network behind a well-configured physical firewall, I haven't had to deal with a single virus outbreak in 8 years.
People love to poo-poo Win2k, but with a few modifications it is still a very capable OS that does everything that you need in a business environment.
BTW, I have no love for Microsoft and the fact that I haven't had to pay a single penny in Microsoft tax in all those years brings a smile to my face. - scarwars, on 02/20/2009, -2/+22you sir, take things way too seriously.

- specialknfnd, on 02/20/2009, -2/+19What sucks is that there are still a lot of people that have work computers that are still running versions of Windows 2000 for whatever reason. Upgrading to IE6, at least in the workplace, is not always possible.
Thank god for Firefox, though. - dazparkour, on 02/20/2009, -1/+18I bet that's because they were made to display in IE 6 and account for all it's quirks and as a result will not work properly in a working, standards compliant, browser.
It's time for them to update their code.
Everything I build these days still needs an IE6 fix. - w3ber, on 02/20/2009, -3/+20nope, no oil
- compgeek, on 02/20/2009, -2/+18IE has go to the worst web browser I've ever used. Slow, crash prone just blech. I remember first using firefox back when it was 0.7 Firebird and back then it smoked IE I switched and never looked back haven't had any issues of compatibility at all for any website I've visited. IE7 and IE8 are simply playing catch up to things browsers like Opera and Firefox have had for literally years now. I don't think I could live without tabbed browsing and I just can't see it being worth while for anything other than windows security to even bother going past the stock IE7 install on my Vista laptop as Firefox was installed the first night I bought it and IE has never ever been used unless absolutely necessary
- pixelguru, on 02/20/2009, -1/+16Our company continues to cling to IE6 due to internal tools being broken on IE7. Compounding the problem is that the corporate IT budget is being squeezed hard by the economic maelstrom, so nobody is in a huge rush to spend a boat-load of money when IE6 still technically "works"... at least at a bare minimum.
As a web developer, I feel the pain of IE6 more than most, but I don't see our company being able to upgrade until things settle down and business picks up. Until then, most of our employees keep IE6 for corporate stuff and use FireFox for regular web use. - yellowaeroplane, on 02/20/2009, -1/+16The amount of your visitors viewing at 800x600 is less than 4%. Just give up on optimizing for that resolution. It's not worth the time and agony. If someone is too damn cheap to ditch the ol' CRT monitor, they should have no problem dealing with horizontal scroll bars on your sites.
Here's a handy little reference of current monitor dimensions:

- afx1, on 02/20/2009, -2/+16making people work for the link...i like your style
- silfiriel, on 02/20/2009, -9/+22do it right and declare a war on IE in general...
- regression, on 02/20/2009, -2/+14I'm talking about chrome...not firefox. It is really small and fast. I like how each tab is a separate process. That way, if something does go wrong, you can kill that process and not the entire browser. I do agree that the privacy issues with chrome are not good. If those are taken care of, I think it could be a really good browser.
- RackAddict, on 02/20/2009, -1/+12True, although I think you mean IE7 ;-)
- abrenna, on 02/20/2009, -1/+12Please prepare for the next phase: PC@work
We need concrete plans on how to get "big brand" companies to do the upgrade ASAP.

Teknisk Ukeblad - goleopards1, on 02/20/2009, -0/+11I'm in tech support at my company and more than half of all IE users still have IE6. Its been over 2 years people?! IE8 is almost out! get with the program!
- cyssero, on 04/18/2009, -2/+13Apparently, Firefox via WINE is the best on Linux, not natively!
- executorzz, on 02/20/2009, -0/+10The people who are still using IE 6 will not get this message.
- thedigitalkach, on 02/20/2009, -0/+10Mobile Web 2009 = Desktop Web 1998
http://www.useit.com/alertbox/mobile-usability.htm ... - AirRaven, on 02/20/2009, -1/+11IETab's a reasonable stopgap solution- if you set your corporate intranet to automatically display sites in IETab, rather than Gecko, you shouldn't have any trouble.
- yellowaeroplane, on 02/20/2009, -0/+10@areyouserious: are you serious?
- IanRReardon, on 02/20/2009, -0/+10I've noticed on my referral tracking that IE6 is actually dieing pretty fast. A year ago it might have been 25% of total browsers, now its around 13%. I would think in a year it will be well into the single digits. (For my site at least).
The thing is that the people using IE6 are your grandparents who are never going to upgrade unless they get a new computer. I doubt they will even see this "war" unless it some how gets onto msn.com or aol.com. - henhouse0, on 02/20/2009, -1/+10Just let IE die altogether, Microsoft is wasting money on programmers to built this program that is HORRIBLE compared to stuff like Firefox.
- TheSpook, on 02/20/2009, -1/+10If you're still using Windows 98, you're probably used to things not always working right.
- dazparkour, on 02/20/2009, -2/+10Cut out 25% of your brain and don't tell me it's suicidal.
For the cost of development, it's much easier to allow all browsers and make money from their users than it is to save money on building the website but lose the income from those with a disallowed browser.
Most people do not have the authority to upgrade the software at their place of work.
The whole thing is not ideal, but you will make more money including IE6 users than you would save from not developing the site to include them. - riverrunner, on 02/20/2009, -2/+10double digg for you.
- thephosphorbox, on 02/20/2009, -1/+9Exact same deal at my company.. we're stuck on IE6 due to some very antiquated web applications that simply don't function in later versions or other browsers. I use Firefox on my machine, but to access certain internal apps, I have to use IE6 :(
- kahn2001, on 02/20/2009, -0/+7the problem is "some" keep on using it
