- jonnyeh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+93People won't use this site. People don't want to learn about their computer, that's why they ask you for help.
- sotjian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+77It got to the point that if someone asked me what I did for a living, I'm a network admin, at a party I told them i installed drywall. No one wants to talk about drywall.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37No I can't fix your computer but here is a website that will help...
http://www.google.com - Cputerace, on 10/12/2007, -3/+37Your plan may backfire tho, i had my first experience doing drywall recently.
Lets just say that I would much rather fix a computer than put up drywall... (actually its the plastering thats the worst part) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32Did you miss the button that says "[reply]" ?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27I can just see it now....
"No I can't fix your computer, but here's a website that can help"
"Website? What's a website?" - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+28Perhaps because you submit to digg, and then spam the digg link on other digg articles? Marked as spam.
- dohdig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Cousin = 35year old female
Cousin asks "Do you know where I can download music for free?"
I reply "Do you know what bit torrent is?"
Cousin reply's "I have heard of it"
I reply "Ok, open your browser..."
Cousin reply's "Is that on my screen saver?"
...I bang head on wall and say "I have another call...ttyl"
Why do n00b's refer to the desktop as screensavers? - richardiscool, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Great! And the first thing it does is teach them how to install ActiveX programs...
- MuffinMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22I was asked by people to BT for Music/Movies/TV a while back...I wanted nothing to do with that SO,
I explained the concept of how BT worked and then they just left me alone.
Techno-Babble Dominates the minds of the weak! - mikedpirone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Completely different article just similar names. Calm down!
- akinder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Plastering is the easy part... until you're mudding a corner where your buddy thought that air bubbles in the paper were acceptable.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22Good job humping the RIAA's leg.
- DCstewieG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Another time I recommend you lie: strip club. Yes I like computers. No I don't want to talk about them during a lapdance, thanks.
Actual "conversation" during:
"What did you major in?"
"Computer science"
"Oh I bet you could help us out then. The computer where the girls sign in is messed up."
Now she wasn't actually asking for help, just trying to make conversation, so fine. But that's it for me. From now on I'll be like George and say I'm an architect. - HMTKSteve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15I fix computers for my in-laws.
They offer to pay in cash but I just smile and say, "no, I don't take cash... you pay by BABY SITTING!!!!!!!!"
I'm waiting for one of them to wear a shirt that says, "no, I will not baby sit your kid in exchange for fixing my computer." - dagr8tim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14hey, I've got this big honking hole in by living room wall, what's the best way to fix it?
- Konquest, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Install Firefox... Everything can be fixed by installing Firefox... :)
- TheTankengine, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15How To Dominate Annoying Trolls
brought to you by ThaRub3X - Cputerace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12bed sheet & duct tape
- HanSolo69, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15sooo...will this help if i can't access the web? no, no it won't.
- dohdig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12I ended up sending her a list of "good" download/music sites:
launch.yahoo.com
napster.com
rhapsody.com
virgindigital.com
...She left me alone since then, aside from asking me to fix her tv's remote control, since I know computers, ya know! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+25Agreed. Buried as spam.
Now bury me for redundancy!! - Archer1980, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Personally i won't teach anyone how to download anything, music included, if someone asks me i just say iTunes. If someone doesn't know enough about it to know where to find it, then they don't know how to keep themselves from getting caught, and if they get caught, it comes back to me because i told them how to do it, and then all hell breaks lose.
Tell them about Torrents, no thank you. - dickeytk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11i would never recommend ubuntu to a n00b, yeah it might be easier to use than other linux os's, but apple and windows are still way easier, and support from other people is much greater than any linux os
- ZippidyDoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I wouldn't use it because the site looks like *****.
- TheTankengine, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14A swing and a miss! Ouch
And ThaRub3X is now batting 2-for-3. - Cputerace, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Because the standard home user sees the 30 day trial of McCrappie installed from 3 years ago and says "I have Antivirus"
- Cputerace, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11You cant show the viewing user that it is a double click, so right click is used.
a user could watch you double click but not know what you did and be lost. - Kruncher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I sell propane and propane accessories...
- kefs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Agreed..
The ads limit the assistance potential this site has. Neophytes aren't as smart as you think. Remove the ads, and try again. - leonbev, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Why on Earth are they telling people to uninstall all of their AntiVirus software, and install Avast instead? That's silly. If someone already has a working and up to date AntiVirus program, use it!
- Archer1980, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Honestly, for the regular user who doesn't know anything about computers, i recommend Dells as well. They are cheap, and if they only want the computer for school work, email and surfing, they don't need to go out and buy a fancy system. I'll recommend a dell long before i recommend anyone go to a local retailer like Staples or Radio Shack to guy there computers. Granted, i live in a smaller comunity we don't have a lot of choices.
- stray, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Buried for asking people to install an ActiveX control.
- ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Along with confusing Google Ad's that will redirect them elswhere.
gg - blinkfink182, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7He recommends only Dell computers, there are better choices than that.
- r0ssta, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8I completley agree. My biggest problem with helping others (family, friends, friends of friends, etc) with their computer is their unwillingness to LEARN. They don't understand that no one knows everything about fixing computers - but by experience and learning, we're able to dissect and solve the problem.
It's as if non-technical people feel they have the inability to learn how to use a computer, and would rather just ask an "expert" to do it for them. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah I know, that was my first thought too when I saw 2 similar article names in Firefox's rss feed (live bookmark). However, I have this strap on my leg that prevents knee-jerk reactions like your post.
- Darkness123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4dohdig: My family is like that as well I can fix PCs, they also think I can do the settings for the TV/VCR/DVD/Washing Machine and Cooker Clock and just about anything else that uses electricity.
- Irco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5wow...that's a really ugly site
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I have been drunk enough to eagerly discuss drywall and drywall application. Sad, but true.
- josh4rim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I would be a great site if it was easily for my grandma to navigate. Until he simplifies the design no average Joe will understand it.
- barius, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Avast sucks, AVG is much more efficient and doesn't require registration.
- TheTankengine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It is not a find. The site belongs to the submitter. Even if it wasn't, it most definitely wouldn't be a good find. The interface is crappy with pop up boxes and ugly colors. The layout is horrible and the topic descriptions are not intuitive. Many grammatical and spelling errors and way too many ads. The videos don't increase the quality of the site in the least.
In conclusion, this site is pathetic spam. - cosmotic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Watch the video on how to remove applications. This person is crazy. Right click, open. Right click, open. Its bold for a reason. It means its the defualt action. Theres no need to right click, then click open. Just double click.
- lburgguy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Ditto to all the above. My wife and her family call the computer a hard drive. Then my wife's hard drive crashed and when I told her I needed to replace the hard drive she freaked thinking I meant the entire computer. And what century are we living in???
- striker1211, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Any Peer to Peer (P2P) Music Swapping Software - Peer to Peer Music Swapping programs are riddled with spyware and constantly re-install the spyware when you delete it. Plus, as much as you don't think so, it is stealing. If you continue to download illegal music, you deserve all the spyware that comes with it :P. In addition to that, many people are being sued by the MPAA and RIAA for their or their children's P2P usage.

Umm... wtf? Then under that he lists Ares as having spyware, which it does not. Marked as lame, learn the ***** facts. - zadadka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If people wanted to learn how to manage and housekeep their PCs, they wouldn't buy dubious versions of Registry Cleaner & the like....
- BobMysterioso, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9Seriously?
I have never had magic stuff appear on my desktop after browsing in Firefox. I have, however, had that happen in IE. I know there are security settings to set, but they aren't there by default. And when someone calls you everytime they want to check their webmail and you have read them their user/pass again, do you think I can walk them through that?
Firefox, while it may have more holes, aren't holes that are targetted. Security through obsucurity - and while Firefox is not obscure in anyway.. its not the most used browser. People write for IE attacks mostly, and only Firefox for 'cred'. - panique, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Sweeping generalizations? Yes. Unjustified? No. There are quite a few spyware outfits trolling for new users under the guise of providing a beneficial service to the user. Telling a user not to fall victim to such social engineering will only confuse them. Telling them specifically not to download "Registry Cleaners", particularly free ones, will help them stay out of trouble.
- BrowserBabe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm not a computer science so i admit i have asked for help from my friends who are, but i always try to make sure that I'm not bothering them. I also ask because I do want to learn more about my computer and how to use and fix problems with it. I'm not a computer expert, but I know quite a bit. I get irritated when i try to help my parents with all their computer problems because they don't want to learn how to do it themselves. As someone who enjoys teaching people I find this so frustrating, however I think many people, especially the older generation who have limited computer experience, are scared of their computers. They are afraid to experiment and try to find the answers because they fear they might lose their files, programs, or simply screw up their very expensive computer.
At least this is what I have seen from my limited experience. I was once in a Technologies for Teachers class....and the woman next to be thought i was a computer genius. I laughed because I'm not even close. Although I do love computers and want to learn more....so I Digg this! Thanks! 0;) -
