- hatano, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33They are both pictures - yes, but they are taken in a very different way. Google earth's pictures is a satellite picture taken vertically. The problem is to render a 3D impression and compare it to a picture taken from a different angle.
- ajskhan, on 10/12/2007, -4/+28The difference is that one has a jet engine, the other doesn't!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Googles doin good
- tommajor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19ddb123, your comment just shows how good it is, cause you can't even tell the difference...
- travishealy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14
just what the internet crowd needed. another reason to never have to leave the house. - Riptide, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13google doesn't do the real one justice though. take a look at the real depth of that ice drop. I believe this would be a glacier. The google image looks like it is just a frozen river, but looking at the real one it looks like a frozen waterfall, or a sheer drop off of a frozen cliff.
- mikebeauchamp, on 10/12/2007, -9/+18Who would have thought... a high resolution image taken by satellite and mapped onto an accurate 3D model of the earth managed to look similar to an image taken from an airplane of the same thing.
- HP844182, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I want to watch myself watch myself as I watch myself through my bedroom window.
- gregmo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Difference with google earth and reality is that google earth is a free look at all beautiful places like this at anytime, while reality is your paying thousands for a short glimpse
- qster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I did the same thing about a month ago, this is from my flat in Spain, pretty good except for the houses :)
http://www.slowdown.co.uk/googlevsphoto.jpg - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6There was that Digg article of the "topless lady" sunbathing on a rooftop a few days ago--all 6 pixels of it.
- jhshukla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5white = red + green + blue.
- jonj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5google looks better. real life is washed out
- mike_p, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Well yeah, what did you expect? For them to waste their time flying a plane to Greenland for some realistic shots of their mountain ranges!? Sounds a bit daft to me.
- ddb123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I appreciate the positive feedback.
- kavau, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Why, that would be awesome - if you're not sure whether you left the garage door open or forgot to turn the lights off - just check Google Earth 3D!!
- darthbutcher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It is going to Pluto, er... 939875995 or whatever it is now called.
- darksmiler, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Is it just me or is this kinda scary?
Soon your house will be re-created in 3D by Google, including that back window you left open! - 23MAL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Also the photo with the Jet Engine doesn't include the helpful Yellow Border Lines that are in the other picture.
- Jeebugorn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5marked as inaccurate, i see no green in that land
- xain, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Nice find. Dugg
- DigitalPioneer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks pretty good. GO GOOGLE!!!
- mike_p, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4/sarcasm
- davids1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Where is all the ice going!
- westmob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@davids1
Well it is a scientific fact that ice melts at a certain temperature, and that is where the ice is going. Just thought you would like to know! - Osiriscky3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3no not really since it was still summer when this was taken
- jhshukla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2google is missing the fog effects.
- paulsaj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lol lets all live in google land!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1maybe if the world was made of pixels..not pigment
- Skeuomorph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They are both "real" photographs of the "real" mountains, glacier, snow, and sea.
- ThatsUnpossible, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also, the one with the jet engine doesn't let you zoom in with an INCREASE in detail.
- MyDigitalSin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll bet if you fly over that area now, a lot of that glacier would be melted now.
- UltraPope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm from Greenland and sadly, I can't see my home town (Greenlands 3rd largest) apart from a white blotch.
It is nice to watch from that height, but the details are pretty poor.
Of course, it is simply a matter of it not making business sense for Google to purchase detailed pictures of the region. Too bad. - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Try rotating the actual photograph to view it from a different angle, then you'll see the difference. The sheer scale of Google Earth as opposed to a photo of a few square miles is impressive too.
- dinosaurau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hey - that's more of a comparison!
I thought for a moment my travelling days were over... all I would need is broadband and google to take my next holiday. I was also feeling that if we all started using google earth for our holidays think of the greenhouse gases we would spare - we may even save the planet - thanks to g earth! Now I have to say that I might have to take a real plane to visit your village in Spain! Woe is us - now the green house gases are likely to rise again! - triden, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Google uses a satellite to take pictures. What's the difference between that and a camera? Of course it's reality
- Armalite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Go get another beer Homer
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/09/26/science/26warming.html?ref=us - haochi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Seems like Google's Earth has worst Global warming.
- mindsocket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's because everything is in focus in GE. You could add false depth of field to the GE shot to acheive the effect.
- Sixotoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1omg I thought the google pic was the real one till I looked closer.
- paulsaj, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1damn i was trying to provoke the hippies.. you guys are too aware.
- sterni, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2uh.. I believe we have to thank NASA for the topographical data that makes Google's 3D map thing possible.. Oh and it was Keyhole and those folks that came up with that.. Goggle just bought it..
- tylerni7, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2The one right is from google, right?
- MSchumacher, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Google still isn't real enough...
...Needs DirectX 10. :-) - Riptide, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Perhaps I am nitpicking, but the google image isn't as defined as the real shot. You can clearly see real depth in the real shot. google is good, but it looks like a video game map to me. (because essentially that's what it is)
- Tempest811, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0according to al gore, shouldn't all that ice be melted by now? quite some times has passed between that flight and the taking of the satellite picture, im sure.
- fatas, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1ddb you are a noob you should be using netscape than digg
- paulsaj, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2isn't it interesting that the glaciers have receded since the google picture?
- dr3d, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1wow 2 photos of the same thing .. look ... the same ! .. intense
- DoogieHowitzer, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1The real photo clearly shows the glacier is smaller than the sat. photo from 2002.... So unrealistic......
