- Shorties, on 10/10/2007, -1/+43Miro + NBC Bittorent RSS Feeds = iTunes replacement for NBC shows...
- h3xley, on 10/10/2007, -4/+40Wow, this is the slowest piece of software I've ever used. (2ghz Core Duo, 2GB RAM)
- manitoba98xp, on 10/10/2007, -1/+25VLC is a media player.
Miro downloads video RSS feeds.
It's like comparing apples to oranges. In fact, on Windows, Miro uses VLC as its video engine. :) - kerrybreyette, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10At least they asked nicely.
- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Was Miro formerly known as Democracy Player, or was that another one?
- Stonekeeper, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Wow, and there was me thinking they'd write "IF YOU DONT FORWARD THIS ON TO 2 PEOPLE WITHIN 24 HOURS YOU WILL DIE. 4 F MY FRIENDS ARE DEAD ALREADY".
- turpenine, on 10/10/2007, -6/+13We can call it a good job when it begins to run more like an app and less like a horribly old person.
- mecredis, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9Good job guys!
- Chaoticwhizz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Yes. Democracy Player became Miro.On Linux Distros, Miro uninstalls Any Democracy Player you have (assuming you are installing through your distro's centralized package management)
- NiX0n, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5This is a preview. You guys do realize this right? They likely haven't optimized any code yet.
Course, I said the same thing for Firefox 2, and we all know how that went :( - fr34k5h0w, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Would you like to elaborate and/or provide a quick tut for the n00bs like... oh say... me?
- protokol, on 10/10/2007, -5/+10Miro uses VLC. So its the same.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I've been using Democracy/Miro for a while and I have to say I really love it. That love was compounded when I bought a Zune. As many of you know, Zune has no automatic podcasting service, but with Miro I just set it to download to my Zune search directories, open it up every once and a while, and everything is automatically added to my Zune at next sync.
- imightbewrong, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5i think miro uses all the same video playing engine components, only it uses a library and web interfaced UI
- hmmdar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Add it then :), its open source for a reason!
- weebit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The software is not really bad, you just have to learn how to run it. The biggest hangup i have with it is it auto downloads. If I have not run the software for a week that can create a nightmare. Right now it is downloading a weeks worth of Frontline, and several other goodies. Don't get me wrong, I am sure I missed something setting it up, but it would just be better if you was prompted with what to download in the first place, instead of the auto downloads. So far this is the only thing I find annoying.
- Shorties, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I don't know I've got similar specs as you and it seems to be running pretty quick. (Though I am running the OSX version).
- hmmdar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4http://ftp.osuosl.org/pub/pculture.org/miro/win/Miro_Installer.exe
I am only linking this because the download feature on the site does not seem to be working well, or at least with my browser. - Lochie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I've never heard of this, but am definitely going to check it out. Thanks!
- blobdole, on 10/10/2007, -7/+10Ok, Miro vs VLC.
Anyone? I have no information. - jthomp3120, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3did you choose to sign up for the email news feed or not?
- Delta32521, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Miro has it's own "channel guide" but it's really more of an automatic video RSS feed reader and downloader than "tv replacement", so all its channels are in effect RSS feeds. I personally am using both of them right now to do completely different things.
- TheWriteGuy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I truly support this project in principle... but, jeez, this program still runs like ass.
- stmiller, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3As long as you install the required python stuff, just download the source and start miro. No compiling needed.
https://develop.participatoryculture.org/trac/democracy/wiki/GTKX11BuildDocs - jimbecile, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4looks awesome!
- imightbewrong, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2i totally agree. the old version was slow, laggy, cumbersome, and annoying as hell
- Apoy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5Memory hog. Sorry.
- Vektuz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I really miss having a skip 15-seconds forward or back button like I do in my regular media player... other than that, this is pretty cool
- Malachai, on 10/10/2007, -0/+21) MIro uses a download-based system rather than a streaming one.
2) With Miro, you're not tied to a limited amount of choices like you are in Joost.
3) Miro open source. Joost is closed source. (Kick me, but it's true) Joost also doesn't have a Linux client, even though they swore they'd make on available (kind of like Skype).
4) You can import ANY video RSS feed into Miro. It also comes with a Channel Guide with plenty of choices. - ModernTenshi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2For some reason I'm having trouble quitting out of it under OS X, and have had to force quit out of it twice. Any ideas why that is, or what I'm doing wrong?
Total Mac newb here, bought my MacBook just this past Friday. - kidcodea, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2ah democracy... errr miro :D
used to like older name better but the prog is still excellent.
its done by people that understand the internet, know what UI means, and understand media and its nature.
STUPID JOOST cant realize the obvious, people with content to stream live (or not) are the ones producing it and have the means to serve it on a non peer to peer basis.
p2p is for shows, and for shows, nothing better than democracy. leeches fasssst and its not ISP shaped :)
It wont ever do live, but live, will always be done by those with means to serve on a non p2p basis. Something joost doesnt understand.
btw joost sux so much it almost killed the trend for awesome 720p or 1080p p2p..
stream services... stage 6 (joox) etc will always win. - Perfectsound, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It still doesn't launch on my XP system.
- stateq2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I was just thinking that. All this excitement over what? No matter the features, if it doesn't run at a reasonable speed, it's useless.
- Shorties, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2http://soylentfoo.jnewland.com/articles/2006/02/22/how-to-subscribe-to-tv-shows-using-the-democracy-player-bittorrent-rss Thats an older article but basically the same thing, the feedburner steps are not needed anymore. You just customize a search TVrss (search for a show, provider, and quality) then copy the custom RSS made by your search and make a new channel in Miro and paste it in. I do not endorse this nor I do not do this as its illegal just telling you how for education purposes...
- BransonLAN, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Skype does have a Linux client.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah from what I hear the team is really working on speeding up the interface. The only problem I really have with speed is with switching channels and they say (in the forums) it's fixable and should be all sped up for launch.
- zdiggler, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2more like complete itune replacement.
- MackenzieArbour, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1This was on the front page yesterday and helped me out a lot.

edit: i meant to reply to fr34k5h0w's comment - varvil, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1TvTorrents.com is the fastest way to get TV Episodes. Because it works on a point system, every episode is usually seeded very well. You must donate something very small (like $1 per month) to get the RSS feed for Miro, but that lets you choose which shows to subscribe to. I highly recommend you check it out!
- samichx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Gutsy isn't released until October, and if anyone using the beta cannot compile (which according to stmiller isn't even requisite) I would suggest that they stop. Miro is available for Feisty and I'm glad about that.
- chase001, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Bitter party of one your table is now available. Bitter? Last call for Bitter party.
- rspawn, on 02/29/2008, -0/+1feb 29 2008: Miro is at version 1.1, and it's still a resource hog.
Miro shows great promise but it needs to be worked on. - Ryosen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Could have been worse. It could have offered to scan through your address book so it could tell you which of your friends are using it. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quechup if you don't know)
- lonniebiz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It is slow, but it will get better. It also crashes some. This is temporary stuff; I'll still use it.
- PaulRay, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1That should read,"Not recommended for XP". It runs on several platforms. Just because it doesn't run right for you doesn't mean it's no good at all.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Utterly unusable on my G5
- lonniebiz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm glad too, but it crashes some in Feisty. It will get better though.
- lonniebiz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I just made a donation to Miro:
https://www.getmiro.com/about/donate/ - coheedcollapse, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I seriously agree with that 100%. I hate the fact that the default when you add a channel is "download new" and you have to go in through every channel you don't want to do it for you in and change it to "off". Can be a real hassle when you're adding a lot of new channels at once.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yup. Downloads anything you tell it to into a single directory. I set my Zune to look in the Miro download directory and set Miro to automatically download new shows via RSS and it pretty much automates the whole system (New content --> Miro downloads --> Zune software detects, converts, and syncs content.) More complicated than itunes, but nice nonetheless.
