- Bukowsky, on 05/19/2009, -1/+25hell yea.. anything to avoid a ticket.
- guyro, on 05/19/2009, -0/+21I've been using Waze here for a few months and it's incredible. They recently opened a giant new motorway. A few weeks later, neither Google Maps nor the 3 other local online maps listed it. Waze, with it's strong community participation, was way ahead of the pack. I heard their "top users" (who compete on mileage entered almost as fiercely as Diggers do on frontpages) find their way to roads under construction, just be be sure to be the first to drive and upload new roads before they're even opened.
- snowcrazy, on 05/19/2009, -1/+18Will it allow me to avoid my mother in law?...or does it have ex wife mode?
- robbob, on 05/19/2009, -1/+17It’s starting with the Google Android platform and the San Francisco bay area.
Not Available on the iPhone (yet) - AmyVernon, on 05/19/2009, -0/+15Once it gets enough data, it should be pretty awesome.
- decker12, on 05/19/2009, -0/+11Goddamn it, ANOTHER great *****' idea that I didn't think of first!
- inactive, on 05/19/2009, -1/+10Most tickets are handed out for mild speeding and other petty offenses that don't harm anyone.
- Whaines, on 05/20/2009, -0/+9Probably a car accident.
- Spoddy, on 05/20/2009, -0/+7FTA: "However, it probably won’t reach enough platforms until it gets its iPhone app approved."
The iPhone won't be the only common phone capable of using this app. Sheesh. - Khast, on 05/20/2009, -0/+6And even if it does get approved, there is still the issue of background running tasks. (as mentioned in the article.)
- jupaneanu, on 05/19/2009, -2/+7haven't started tweeting in traffic yet, but who knows what the future holds?
- lordmike, on 05/20/2009, -0/+5Sure beats my CB radio.... "Breaker Breaker... There's a smokey bear looking at ya eastbound at the 153 marker, c'mon!" It's no fun having to talk like that all the time (and if you don't, the other truckers ignore you!)
- cdawzrd, on 05/20/2009, -0/+5The iPhone app is waiting to get approved.
- seattlerock, on 05/19/2009, -0/+5Amazing
- benitojuarez, on 05/20/2009, -0/+5WinMo version please.
- linuxwarz, on 05/19/2009, -1/+5I prefer my Valentine One.
- gsenechal, on 05/20/2009, -0/+4Trapster is nice... No traffic data, but good speed trap info.
- orie, on 05/20/2009, -1/+5And cops break them all the time, just like the rest of us who go 70 in a 65, or whatever. Your point, though true, is irrelevant to the point of this app.
- frieddonuts, on 05/20/2009, -0/+3Services like digg, thesixtyone, and waze get it. The way to build a service around customer participation is to find a community of dedicated core users who will propel the development of the information product as a whole.
Online games have been doing this for a long time. The model has finally moved to information in general.
It's like the Dash GPS service, but building on top of a pre-existing hardware platform with more in-depth features. - nabenmargi, on 05/20/2009, -0/+3Here's hoping these features become standard on all GPS units. How awesome would it be if this type of user generated information could be used to prevent the issuing of pointless speeding tickets! It only takes a few people to call attention to a speed trap and having that information lets everyone behind them slow down in anticipation. With this technology we can really beat the cops and rise above irrational traffic laws!!!
- Turkman182, on 05/19/2009, -0/+3I'm behind that.
- Unbeleve, on 05/20/2009, -0/+3Have_you_tried_Trapster_for_the_iPhone?
- DefiniteFail, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2No Blackberry support. :(
Well, I guess I'll check back later. - splinter09, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2Any Ideas if that will work outside the US?
- linagee, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2Is there a system for internet connected GPSes where you can report various road violations and alert the police? Hit a button on your internet connected GPS and it tells the donut-eating cop on his internet connected GPS that he needs to respond? Much quicker to hit a button than call 911.
- frontaxle, on 05/20/2009, -1/+3Another thing to look at instead of the road.
- rnawky, on 05/20/2009, -1/+3And it will get rejected because of some retarded reason.
- 1shawn, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2Not if you're in traffic that looks like a parking lot. If you're not moving, how can tweeting be dangerous?
- waldo686, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2who cares about traffic just let me know how to avoid the 5-0 from my phone
- sapped, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2Actually Trapster does have traffic data - but only in cities where Google supplies it. I use it on Mondays when I travel to the airport to see if there are any holdups on the freeways ahead of me.
- linagee, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2Dash Express
http://www.dash.net/product/traffic.php
Internet connected GPS that's been around for quite a while. I never understood why a "Tomtom" is a more familiar name than Dash Express. - adstrategist, on 06/09/2009, -0/+2Ermmm... I'm not quite sure the cops will be happy with you afterwards.. :P
- kylef, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2Glad you mentioned it. Works great on my Bold, and I like the fact that users can input new traps, and voice alerts work well.
- hipcat, on 05/28/2009, -0/+2Oh man! I NEED this!!! :)
- TeamTrapster, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2Just wanted to let people know, Trapster is a free mobile app that alerts users via spoken alerts. The app includes driving directions, local search (e.g. "pizza"), real time traffic and incidents, and a trip recorder with geotagged photos and trip tracking.
Trapster is available for the iPhone, BlackBerry, Nokia, and Java/J2ME version, with Android, Windows Mobile, and more on the way. If you get a chance to check us out, let us know what you think. - newman8r, on 05/20/2009, -2/+3it's actually the most innovative cell phone ever created - but you have obviously never owned one
- visio, on 08/27/2009, -0/+1Looks really cool! My GPS sucks anyways... if nothing else it is a really interesting technology. Thanks for the article!
- ohreilly, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1"Its technology gathers information on driving patterns, traffic, accidents, police traps and more "
I thought TomTom's kit could do most of that (in the UK at least)? - newl, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1You'd like a Stinger DSI even more. ;)
- ecblogger, on 06/07/2009, -0/+1very cool, I like that
- skews13, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1Great app. Anything that warns you of police presence is a great app. As someone who travels the interstate, and state routes frequently as part of my job. I'm happy to provide the creator of the app with all of the radar traps in my area as i am familiar with all of them with 35 years of driving experience.
- blankmedia, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1and then it gets pulled down
- zombiecake, on 05/21/2009, -0/+1nah, the easiest way to avoid a ticket is to avoid cops like the plague and practice evasion when necessary.
- BuddyChrist, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1neither did they ;)
- cgoly01, on 10/24/2009, -0/+1Looks great
- gsenechal, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1Woot! That's great. Thanks for the note. I think Google does have traffic info for my city, so I'll check it out on tomorrow's commute.
- p4tricia, on 05/28/2009, -0/+1Oh wow, this is awesome. At this rate, the police will sure lose their revenue soon.
- BuddyChrist, on 05/20/2009, -0/+1that's okay. iPhone users have Trapster.
- Tessting, on 06/04/2009, -0/+1Very interesting
