- kman2k1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29They also redesigned Google while they were at it.
http://people.mozilla.com/~beltzner/firefox2-tabs.jpg - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22This is only dealing with Firefox on the Mac. What the developers are shooting for with Firefox 2 is to have Firefox run using the Native Libraries on each platform (of course, they're choosing GTK instead of Qt on Linux because of licensing, though I believe there is a Qt branch of Firefox out there, but it's poorly maintained, seeing as the Qt guys have KHTML and Konqueror).
They believe by making applications look more native, that the platform that Firefox is (XUL) will start to grow (people like their applications to look and behave natively, it's a huge kill to usability). So basically, changing this part of the UI shouldn't affect other platforms.
Edit: and btw, on Linux, Firefox has been native for quite a while. If you're not complaining about it now, there should be no reason to complain in the future (Firefox and GTK are fully themeable). - detrate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11sexy
in case the comment above mine gets burried, here's a quick pic
http://people.mozilla.com/~beltzner/firefox2-tabs.jpg
w..t..h... looks like the comment script is owning me in the face with it's %22's on my edit... you'll have to copy and paste the link... time to file a bug report! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Wow, those are much better. (The first sort of looks like Camino)
- Duelus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Wow those themes look pretty cool, But I am worried about how they would make it look native to gnome. Gnome when freshly installed looks horrible. But I do like what it looks like on mac :)
- lilrabbit129, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7What I really want in Firefox (on OSX anyway) is for it to support universal spell checking, like Safari does. One of the main reasons I still switch back and forth.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm confused. I'm looking at the FireFox2 mockup for OS X and it looks EXACTLY like what I already have in FireFox 1.5 on OS X.
- cphuntington97, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I *heart* http://www.pimpzilla.nl pimpzilla (sorry I don't know how to do links on digg)
I'm not a gangster but I play one on my web browser.
Actually, I just find pimpzilla to be incredibly handsome. - mooninite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5People still have not figured out that the comment system has changed?
How dense are people?
*smacks head* - alexdagrate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Oh no, the second one looks like the Tiger version of Apple Mail! I hate those buttons.
I think they should consult the guy who did the UNO and iTuno unified theme. - seanm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The first one looks very nice, almost like Camino.
The second one though is really ugly in my opinion. I hate the Mail-like toolbar buttons. The first thing I did when upgrading to 10.4 was change Mail's hideous toolbar icons using Mail Stamps. - wardriver20, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6First one is sexy.
Second, ugly. - detrate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Actually, the difference between pro and non seems to be prominate in the tabs. Pro comes down from the bookmarks toolbar.
The difference in Eos and Brazil is the colors of the tabs.
Note: there are probably more differences, that was just after looking at them for ~20 seconds. - kabz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I like the designs. The first of the pair looks just like Camino, but the Jeff Yaksick one also looks really good.
The decision may depend on how 10.5 ends up looking. - voltagex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4New google home page in the tabs screenshot?
- brainache, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3*shudder* those Mail.app buttons!
I replaced mine with the mail.app buttons from 10.3! - shauncullen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Really, as far as apps on OS X right now are concerned, the unified look is the best, iTunes and Mail look damn slick, and so would Firefox.
- mooninite, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I've come to love the Tango icon set. It works pretty well with any OS. Just scrap native OS icons and use Tango across the board. http://tango-project.org
- the_snitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Agreed. I hate those Capsule Mail buttons. What is Apple thinking? They constantly break their own interface guidelines, which just screws up all the developers who try to copy Apple rather than going by the guidelines.
The custom corner radiuses on the iLife Apps drive me insane too..next thing you will see developers making their own windows have screwed up corners to copy Apple. >:| - Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Charamel > any other Firefox theme, yo.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How about develop it using cocoa... I left firefox for camino because it's lack of standard os x interface and memory leak.
- the_snitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah i also hope they implement standard Cocoa buttons, lists and scrollers etc. I know its cross-platform developed using XUL which is why it lacks Cocoa widgets, but im sure they can hack them in there somehow. I have a much bigger problem with the buttons much more than the default theme (which also sux)
- davdav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love the themes personally. I wish I could find the one like the new mail theme.
- Writher, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Serious question: What is so special about this interface? It looks exactly like Firefox on my Windows Box right now except it doesn't have the "File, Edit, View, etc" menus. I'm assuming this is because it's going to use the Mac stuff for those. But what's the big deal about these screenshots?
- Cronos1388, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2We need a new theme really badly. The current one is terrible.
Those both look way better than the current one we have. Even if the new theme is only for OSX I'm sure it'll work fine on Windows Firefox. - mightymouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think they should team up with the designers of the theme for flock.. that would be pretty good.
- StringCheesian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Keep in mind those themes are for OS X, not Windows or Linux. It's probably closer to what an OS X user is used to, and probably why you don't like it if you prefer Windows' look.
- diggnationdevon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it looks great, much nicer then the 1.5 default.
- detrate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hmm... in reference to my comment about copying and pasting that link... it appears as though while editing a comment.. links are surrounded by quotes until you refresh the page.
- MrC539, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes! I use Camino occasionally as an alternative to Safari, and although Camino (unlike Firefox) is Cocoa-based, Gecko isn't Cocoa-based so none of the Cocoa functionality works in the window. I, personally, cannot be without the command-option-d dictionary tooltip.
- strcmp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As far as I know, this would only be possible if Firefox were a Cocoa app.
- rtruectoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree that the first looks like camino, which happens to be my browser of choice. Would switch to Firefox if this theme were available
- HalfBrian, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5I just don't see it.
Plus, FF is really just updating their own design, since IE7 basically just updated (and made more curvey) FF's UI - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought the next firefox is gonna have something like "spell as you type" feature.
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is a firefox extension for called aspellfox that lets you spell check things, if you have aspell installed. This is the same thing gaim uses for spell check, so you should already have it if you use gaim.
- dolphumous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been using Qute for a long while now. I do like the FF2 new default look and feel though.
And it looks like Charamel isn't compatible with the newest releases of firefox. - dasch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Spell checking is coming in 2.0
- norbiu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, me too. I think I will be using some of those icons in the near future.
- the_snitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We're talking about OS X here. You dont use IE on a mac, do you?
- jerbaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the best new default theme for FF2 would be one where some of the *really* irritating bugs that are more than 3 years old are fixed, but that's just me.
- fa_pa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Probably a greasemonkey or stylish script or he/she just liked to create a new google design with the mockup ;)
- renatoram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not entirely impossible, actually: just take GreaseMonkey and maybe Platypus, build a mod-script, and google will look the way you prefer :-)
- tehnico, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If camino has extensions, I'd never use firefox again.
- shadowmoses, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks good, I am really looking forward to the release
- jk_baller23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The first pic is slightly different. The top is the modified version and the bottom is the current version. Just more gray on the top part. You can notice the difference in the second pic. Both look good.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What the hell are you smoking? They're not even remotely similar.
- spiralfive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Somehow I don't see the resemblance.
[edit:] Wait a second, this was supposed to be a reply to the comment below this! - Xiol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Woah, now just hang on there. What's this about Qt licensing? It's *GPL* unless you use it for commercial purposes - which they're not.
I would love to see a Qt version because then it may just match the rest of my KDE desktop and stop me from having to load a GTK theme manager in the background all the time just so the fonts look half-way decent on the menus.
Edit: Someone had a go once: http://dot.kde.org/1094924433/ - samsoffes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2amazing. i might have to switch.
- PSyMastR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, that's good they are finally getting to have Firefox "mesh" with all the interfaces of the OS's. That will allow for a more seamless integration and it will feel more natural towards the user.
