New Version of Miro - Internet TV / Torrent Downloader
getmiro.com — Version 1.2 of Miro has just been released. It's a major update with performance and bug fixes, new download settings, personalized channel recommendations based on your ratings. Miro is simply the easiest way to use bittorrent and the best video rss reader anywhere.
- 929 diggs
- digg it
- podcastnyc, on 03/21/2008, -2/+35Really the best desktop video client you can find.
- geddon, on 03/21/2008, -7/+4I do agree that Miro is the best open source video player; however, I believe that it fails to deliver a "television experience". The only thing Joost has going for it is their content delivery -- something Miro could learn a great deal from. Limiting the application to simply being a fancy player overlooks the potential to define Internet Television.
- MeneerR, on 03/21/2008, -3/+10You mean streaming instead of downloads? Hmm .. i dont care much for streaming. You can't really pause it. I can not truly watch it when I want to watch it. Not in high-quality anyway.
- Kurlumbenus, on 03/21/2008, -2/+2It's a matter of interactivity. That's where the internet's potential as an entertainment media lies - the union of passive (tv) and active (games) entertainment.
- geddon, on 03/21/2008, -1/+1I agree with Kurlumbenus and believe that Miro should capitalize on this potential in order to affect the way we view cable vs. the interweb for video entertainment.

- FlyingLlama, on 03/21/2008, -11/+4miro as an app is amazing, but i'm sorry miro's content sucks.
- MeneerR, on 03/21/2008, -2/+16tvrss.net ==> pretty much everything hollywood produces. Copy the rss-link and add it to miro. Works great.
The whole point is that you can get content from anywhere. That they don't control the content.- FlyingLlama, on 03/21/2008, -1/+2nice looks good ill check it out.
- ba5e, on 03/21/2008, -6/+0I added http://tvrss.net but miro says its incompatible. . ..
- geddon, on 03/21/2008, -1/+1you need to add the feeds, not the website.
- MeneerR, on 03/21/2008, -2/+16tvrss.net ==> pretty much everything hollywood produces. Copy the rss-link and add it to miro. Works great.
- Kurlumbenus, on 03/21/2008, -16/+4Sounds like bloatware. What makes this better than, say Media Player Classic?
- Kurlumbenus, on 03/21/2008, -8/+1Answer the question, corporate shills!
- brianara3, on 03/21/2008, -0/+7Uh... it has built in torrent support, plays video rss feeds, saves youtube videos, and supports HD streaming.... and thats just from the homepage list.

- lipilee, on 03/21/2008, -14/+7great software! I'm watching my weekly Diggnation treat in Miro. how cool it would be to have Kevin recognize this piece and say hi to us or something.
- RudeTurnip, on 03/21/2008, -2/+4I use iTunes & AppleTV now, but I started off with Miro, TVersity & my Xbox 360 to get video feeds. Miro helped me discover Infected, and that's how I was first exposed to everything else on Revision3. A lot of Diggnation's sponsors made money from me buying their stuff because I was able to find their shows on Miro.
- Fergy, on 03/21/2008, -1/+27This version adds lots of tweaks and bug fixes that make Miro smoother and slicker. It also lays the groundwork for some big improvements that are coming soon. Version 1.2 is the best Miro yet.
Some of What’s New in Miro 1.2
* On Windows and Linux, we updated to XULRunner 1.9, which brings memory and performance improvements.
* We’ve added a much-requested preference to set new channels to not auto-download.
* New preferences for tweaking number of simultaneous auto-downloads and torrent seeding.
* Important re-architecting of the frontend and backend code.
* Lots of bug fixes and tweaks.
* On OSX, we updated to Perian 1.1.
* On Windows, the Miro installer is now much simpler and prettier.
* Improved support for Flash in Channel Guide pages.
* Improved translations for dozens of languages.- NinjaBoy, on 03/21/2008, -2/+3Does anyone else have the miro downloader fatal error? I have tried 3 different pc's but it randomly crashes while downloading. I can still watch shows, but i have to exit and start the program again to resume downloading. Other than that minor issue, i love it. I have my pc hooked to my hdtv and this month im getting rid of my cable tv all together.
- Acglaphotis, on 03/21/2008, -1/+2i have this problem too.
- BinaryFragger, on 03/21/2008, -1/+2The performance improvements are noticeable. Launching Miro used to take about 30 seconds with my old Sempron system, and now it takes about 10 seconds.
- antdude, on 03/21/2008, -1/+2"We’ve added a much-requested preference to set new channels to not auto-download." = FINALLY. I hated that autodownload!

- xsimonxcorex, on 03/21/2008, -2/+8awesome software.
this is seriously making the internet and media better- geddon, on 03/22/2008, -0/+1I read somewhere that the airwaves originally belonged to the people and that television evangelists once preached that TV would greatly enhance our education and empower our Democracy. Obviously, the complete opposed has occurred under the ownership of the FCC and mainstream media. Citizen media does more than making the Internet better -- it has the same potential to Revolutionize our way of life.
Or Net Neutrality can fail as Ron Paul lets all of those Free Market Media Moguls do unto the Web as was done until television.

- noseeme, on 03/21/2008, -15/+40Miro needs some more good original content... And by good content, I don't mean ***** like Diggnation, which is already on it. (Now watch me get buried to hell!)
- leerie, on 03/21/2008, -5/+0Well I do watch diggnation, but I agree, I think Miro needs some really good exclusive content, it would help get more people to use it which in turn would increase the good content.
- noseeme, on 03/21/2008, -5/+4I was thinking of maybe making my own show where I throw live cats and dogs off of the top of tall buildings for metaphorical value. Would anyone watch it?
- positron, on 03/21/2008, -2/+8Today we're teaching poodles how to fly!
- Kurlumbenus, on 03/21/2008, -0/+4Dug for UHF
- MeneerR, on 03/21/2008, -4/+2Go to TVRSS.NET
Select the shows you like (lost, prisonbreak, i dunno?) .. right click on the rss icon .. and add that to miro.
How´ s that for content? - RudeTurnip, on 03/21/2008, -0/+7Exclusive content would defeat the purpose of Miro...we're trying to get away from all of that old media lock-in *****.
- noseeme, on 03/21/2008, -5/+4I was thinking of maybe making my own show where I throw live cats and dogs off of the top of tall buildings for metaphorical value. Would anyone watch it?
- wired1087, on 03/21/2008, -9/+0How is Diggnation *****? I think it trocks!
- UConnBBall, on 03/21/2008, -3/+2WHAT EXCLUSIVE? Its the internet not Miro that makes content. Miro is only a RSS Video reader.
Thats like saying TV better make exclusive content.
Well I use it to stream videos on my network and listen to my audio podcast on it.- MeneerR, on 03/21/2008, -2/+1Finally somebody that gets it!
And not just the big players that can afford the bandwidth.
MIRO SUPPORTS RSS-FEEDS WITH TORRENTS TO VIDEO FILES.
Get it? You can pretty much add pirateybay.org to it, to just download and watch everything.
I prefer tvrss.net though
- MeneerR, on 03/21/2008, -2/+1Finally somebody that gets it!
- UConnBBall, on 03/21/2008, -3/+2WHAT EXCLUSIVE? Its the internet not Miro that makes content. Miro is only a RSS Video reader.
- geddon, on 03/21/2008, -2/+13I do get your point but it sounds a little like saying that Firefox needs better content. Take a look at Next New Networks; specifically, Channel Frederator and EPIC-FU. Both of those shows raise the standards for video podcasting and citizen journalism. You should also check out The Stimulator on subMedia TV if you're looking for an antidote to Fox News.
http://www.nextnewnetworks.com/
http://submedia.tv/- MeneerR, on 03/21/2008, -3/+4http:/www.tvrss.net/ (select show like heroes, right-click on rss-feed icon, select 'copy' and subscribe that link with miro!)
- joel8x, on 03/21/2008, -10/+4I agree Diggnation is *****. They need to spice it up like Totally Rad Show so you don't nod off after 15 minutes.
- NinjaBoy, on 03/21/2008, -2/+1I play a drinking game to it. I try to drink each time any of them do. I have a ton of fun!
- kevyn, on 03/25/2008, -0/+1it can get rather boring when they sidetrack away from stories...
- NinjaBoy, on 03/21/2008, -0/+9But its not made to have original content. Miro isn't a video production group. Its made to be one source/aggregator for multiple different sites that have original content.
- antdude, on 03/21/2008, -1/+1I'd like to see it bonded with Hulu's videos.
- leerie, on 03/21/2008, -5/+0Well I do watch diggnation, but I agree, I think Miro needs some really good exclusive content, it would help get more people to use it which in turn would increase the good content.
- mikesbaker, on 03/21/2008, -11/+6easiest way to torrent - thanks I'll stick with Azureus (or Vuze as it is now called) and media player classic
- geddon, on 03/21/2008, -4/+6Miro goes way beyond sharing crappy cams with your peers. They're building a platform for Internet Television. Apart from Including almost every codec necessary to play your torrent videos, Miro enables viewers with the ability to subscribe to RSS "channels" while making it easy for everyone to create their own stations. Take a good look at the effects of mainstream media on our culture and realize how important citizen media is to our future.
- Alegoo92, on 03/21/2008, -10/+4Miro needs to be fixed so that it doesn't crash/freeze my mac trying to load all of the material at once the minute I open it...
Until version two I'm not going to risk that frustration.- UConnBBall, on 03/21/2008, -7/+14I thought Macs didn't crash?
- omjeremy, on 03/21/2008, -9/+2Too bad there are no good videos. Hulu and Torrents FTW.
- geddon, on 03/21/2008, -4/+2Kicking the crack habits of our mediated culture is tough, but you should look more closely at the podcasts that Miro features in their guide. There are already a handful of networks that exclusively produce video podcasts such as Next New Networks, with shows that include Channel Frederator and EPIC-FU. The guys that own Digg are also involved in their own video podcast network. Public broadcasting is also starting to get more involved with podcasting. Not to mention all of the independent shows such as I Am Ninja that are making a pretty dime from advertising.
- sickswaystop, on 03/21/2008, -3/+2Hulu FTW??? not so much
- wired1087, on 03/21/2008, -2/+0Any podcast with an RSS feed can be agged with Miro, plus it lets you dl vids from youtube and sites like that....It's great...torrent performance isn't great from my experience though....
- disbooya, on 03/21/2008, -1/+2As of Miro 1.1, it uses libtorrent, which is very fast and has good encryption support.
- dannylewis, on 03/21/2008, -1/+3Oh really? I just went on a rant about it not having it... but i haven't upgraded since the 1.0... (haven't had time to use it) Thanks for the heads up.
- disbooya, on 03/21/2008, -1/+2As of Miro 1.1, it uses libtorrent, which is very fast and has good encryption support.
- geddon, on 03/21/2008, -4/+9Miro desperately needs to learn how to interface with social video sites such as Digg Videos and StumbleUpon Videos. Trying to find new podcasts and choose which one I want to watch is a tedious task. But when you start creating channels that deliver content specifically aligned with your interests (a la Pandora in the shade of Video) -- you've got yourself pure crack, baby!!!
- Ephilei, on 03/21/2008, -2/+10Miro will never get exclusive content - it's all about making video freely accessible.
- marklittle, on 03/21/2008, -4/+1This should work well with the hundreds of legal movie torrents on http://wortharchiving.com
- TheWiseNoob, on 03/21/2008, -6/+1I wish there was a release that used Qt because Miro really is a great program.
- eosp, on 03/21/2008, -1/+1Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KatchTV then.
- plorie, on 03/21/2008, -5/+1http://www.chooseandwatch.com/ is easier to use and no download necessary. I can tuse Miro at work, but i can use C&W
- cizzop, on 03/21/2008, -9/+4SPAM SPAM SPAM SPAM
(?) - str3ama, on 03/21/2008, -3/+5Try it with these, some are hit and miss (as in they may not work) with miro:

LAME - RobotLeAwesome, on 03/21/2008, -8/+0Joost has better content than Miro, and that's sad.
Ads or not, I use Hulu because they have good content.
oh, and this is clearly spam - bury. - dannylewis, on 03/21/2008, -4/+2For Miro to be undeniably great, it NEEDS Bittorrent transport encryption. Many ISPs limit bittorrent traffic regardless of whether it is legal or not. I suppose a work around is to use Azureus to to download your Bittorrent files and have Miro monitor the directory and import them directly, but I would be preferred to have that feature inside of Miro.
- dannylewis, on 03/21/2008, -1/+3My bad, according to the Miro Blog, "Meanwhile, there’s a technology battle raging. BitTorrent, Inc. has also recently proposed a new standard that would strengthen bittorrent encryption. Miro already supports a basic level of encryption, which helps reduce the extent to which service providers can block BitTorrent traffic." http://www.getmiro.com/blog/2008/02/net-neutrality ...
- jonesin, on 03/21/2008, -2/+3I'm getting dependency issues when trying to install this using their Ubuntu repos.
miro:
Depends: libxine1 (=1.1.2) but 0.9.8.1-0ubuntu5 is to be installed
Bummer.- trusttimothy, on 03/21/2008, -1/+2Yeah, Gutsy uses a newer lib than the one miro depends on. But it also seems that you still get the 1.1.2 version of miro from their repos. So maybe it will work when it is updated to 1.2
- belfastbiker, on 03/21/2008, -7/+1Wonder how many ppl like myself found this story and ended up downloading and being impressed with Joost instead?
- belfastbiker, on 03/21/2008, -3/+1OK, tried Miro now, nowhere near as polished, not even close, and tried to add a feed highlighted here, and it became unresponsive, perpetually trying to search for video on the sight, and letting me do nothing else.
Uninstalled. Hello Joost, how YOU doin'? - sq2shooter, on 03/21/2008, -5/+1Joost will be showing live streaming college hoops during March madness. It is a new feature and needs some tweaking but it is still pretty neat watching NCAA games live on the computer.
- belfastbiker, on 03/21/2008, -3/+1OK, tried Miro now, nowhere near as polished, not even close, and tried to add a feed highlighted here, and it became unresponsive, perpetually trying to search for video on the sight, and letting me do nothing else.
- lun0, on 03/21/2008, -1/+1Before I only used itunes for video podcasts and other things, now miro came in I am addicted, even as a bitorrent client it is definitely a great piece of software.
- macfan93, on 03/21/2008, -7/+1This will be terrible just like joost. People want GOOD free content.
- craigyjack, on 03/21/2008, -0/+4Anyone know if the linux issues have been fixed. I've tried Miro several times on linux and every time there is problems and I can hardly run (crashing or locking up) the program. The Mac version is great, I really hope they made it better for linux this time around.
- janetd, on 03/21/2008, -1/+1Hi - it's possible there was conflicts with the video renderer. With 1.2 we have added a preference to switch between xine and gstreamer. If you still have problems - you can always file a ticket at bugzilla.pculture.org
- quakerorts, on 03/21/2008, -5/+1I tried Miro because Democracy Now! started using it, but I found it useless and uninstalled it immediately. I use uTorrent for downloads and JetAudio for playing and streaming.
- jakery, on 03/21/2008, -1/+1Miro is all about what you make of it. How you use it and why you do. I replaced my TV with Miro and will never go back, now if they would just give our Apple TV's for free...
- univerio, on 03/21/2008, -4/+1wtf? Why does the installation file seem a lot fatter than the previous version?
- InYourWorld, on 03/21/2008, -2/+1Looks sweet, downloading now.
- rollerboy, on 03/21/2008, -3/+1this makes me think: is Windows Media Player still alive? I mean having such a dominance? with iTunes and so many others in the market. I myself use Cowon's JetAudio.
- plorie, on 03/21/2008, -1/+1http://digg.com/television/Forget_Miro_Joost_watch ... related story
- lynx44, on 03/21/2008, -1/+1Does it work with a remote? I don't want to have to get out the keyboard and mouse on my MythBox in order to find stuff I want to watch. I want to subscribe to particular RSS feeds, then browse what is there and start the download using my remote. Ideally I'd rather just have a MythTV plug in, but if this is smooth then it would work for now.
- shaftshaker, on 04/19/2008, -0/+1Miro is pretty cool, so are these:-
