- inactive, on 05/17/2009, -2/+17Another ***** search engine no one will ever uses, using the "GOOGLE KILLER" approach to get free advertising?
Cuil anyone??? - DatDudeWiggs, on 05/17/2009, -1/+15Well if another becomes better then I'm fine with switching. Until then my homepage stays the same...
- dragossh, on 05/17/2009, -0/+8That's because Google is a dumb aggregator, while Wolfram Alpha is much more than that. That, and Wolfram Alpha has a lot of US data while data for other countries is not there yet.
How about these queries:
"sky chart may 22, 1989"
"microsoft vs apple"
"earthquakes in indonesia last year"
"next solar eclipse in UK"
"running 4km male"
"how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood"
"$25/hour"
"400 words"
It's not always about the quantity, it's about the quality of results. It also matters a lot how you structure your input. - brianpeiris, on 05/17/2009, -0/+4Wolfram Alpha is in the midst of a gradual launch.
Their search features looks pretty impressive, but even more so is their launch command post, looks like a scene out of NASA:

http://blog.wolframalpha.com/2009/05/15/counting-d ... - abhiroop, on 05/17/2009, -3/+5I tried the following search in google, wolfram and cuil: "who won the general elections in india in 2009"
In cuil I got no results
in wolfram alpha (after trying various combos) I got no results
in google I had the usual 100,000 results, the first of which was the wiki page about the 2009 indian elections!
I know wolfram is trying something different, but I would have thought I'd get an answer for such a basic question (even after trying variations!) - brianpeiris, on 05/17/2009, -2/+4Sadly, Wolfram|Alpha's weakness is that all of it's data is hand-curated. It does not crawl every corner of the web like Google does and it only updates certain sources (like wikipedia) periodically.
So, although you'll probably get a better quality out of W|A, you won't get the quantity or timeliness of data that Google has.
Wolfram|Alpha's usefulness is still to be determined, it might just end up as a slightly more intelligent alternative to Google. - derjames, on 05/18/2009, -0/+2from WolframAlpha:
"I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that..." Wolfram|Alpha has temporarily exceeded its current maximum test load - JohnnyCroddy, on 05/18/2009, -0/+1That wasn't the case. It was a dns problem. If you got sent to a certain server you got that message, but overload wasn't the case.
- tonnixx, on 05/18/2009, -0/+1http://Search.io should be present too
- zbeast, on 05/18/2009, -0/+1Currently it's not about just search, it's a about data.
Most websites are trash. The winner in the new search space will be the first company
that can provide informational data. Books, scientific data, science papers, government data.
- cgoly01, on 10/24/2009, -0/+1Thanks for sharing !
- RPGmaster, on 05/17/2009, -1/+2I searched Cuil for "general elections in india in 2009"
The first link was www.indian-elections.com/
Which do you find answers your question better, Wikipedia or this site? (I really would like to know :P ) - the8thbit, on 05/17/2009, -0/+1http://img177.imageshack.us/img177/5295/cuil.png
The only good use for Cuil.
I have a hard time believing any search engine is going to displace Google Search any time soon, however, I can see something like Wolfram|Alpha standing adjacent to Google as a different way to gather specific types of information, but not a direct competitor. (Kind of like what Wikipedia is to Google right now) - JohnnyCroddy, on 05/18/2009, -0/+1Wolframalpha shouldn't be in there. It's definitely not a search engine. If you put in "funny videos" at best you will get a comparison between the words "funny" and "video" but if you put in "3000 coin flips" you'll get a breakdown. If you put "Thomas" you'll get stats on the name if you put "Thomas Steven" it will put a comparison of the names. It's an AWESOME!! new tool , but not a search engine.
- visio, on 08/27/2009, -0/+1Interesting, but I do not see anyone really competing against Google... when that happens I will be excited but I have yet to seen even slight evidence for it.
- hipcat, on 05/28/2009, -0/+1I'll be looking forward to something useful for a change instead of all this corporate bloat!
- JohnnyCroddy, on 05/18/2009, -0/+1You wont get answers like that from w|a , it's not for websearches. It's for computing answers. It uses Mathematica to do all it's computations. If you put in "general elections for india 2009" you aren't gonna get anything, but if you put "Seattle Delhi" you will get a bunch of comparisons of seattle and delhi even the flight time and distance between the two. If I put 65 gallons of gold w|a will convert it and show tons of stats. I could put 350 lb at 50 MPH and get all kinds of info including force and how joueles of work it would take to make that happen. W|A is not a search engine.
- shalinshaun, on 05/24/2009, -0/+1Wolfram alpha is pretty impressive!
- omega3, on 06/04/2009, -0/+0great story!
- Tessting, on 06/04/2009, -0/+0i like it
- tchrmn, on 05/18/2009, -0/+0Some interesting search engines listed in that article. I've also had very good luck with www.sweetsearch.com lately.
- RPGmaster, on 05/17/2009, -1/+1I use Cuil because I find it better, not because the called themselves better.
- dhalarewich, on 07/10/2009, -0/+0Google is great and all... but it's true, there definitely room for improvement. We are all so used to search being done the same way.
- Mbooster3, on 10/05/2009, -0/+0The thing is should we give those new search engines a try or should we just stick to Google.com.
I am sure that no one has the time to try every possible query to determine who is the best.
Lately i have heard of a few new competitors , including: Bing.com, Avasearch.com, Cuil.com, clasearch.com. I have tried some queries and they all gave me good results. But i prefer sticking to one search engine and untill i don't hear from the experts .... - ausmate, on 06/25/2009, -0/+0Could Google be stalling the advancement of the Internet? The hords of us, web developers, trying to create "search engine friendly" sites are certainly contributing to maintaining a status quo in the online search market but good to see that alternatives are emerging...
http://all-things-spatial.blogspot.com/2009/06/cou ... - lembergm, on 08/02/2009, -0/+0There's another search kind-of competing with Google called Blekko by Rich Skrenta which got funding by Marc Andreesen.
Skrenta is also backing local shopping search http://milo.com/
featured in Lifehacker:
http://lifehacker.com/5308433/milo-checks-local-st ...
It shows you what's on the shelves of your local stores right now
other backers and advisers include silicon valley prominents from Facebook, Paypal, Youtube... - Mathiaslylo, on 08/04/2009, -0/+0Fusionsearch is also pretty damn good. Merges results from Google Bing and Yahoo and has a very cool design! Also it seems to be able to do it quite quickly. Located at http://fusionsearch.us.
- imkidred, on 05/17/2009, -2/+1I checked out like 4 of them. Google has zero to worry about.
- inactive, on 05/17/2009, -4/+269 diggs, great number- and only 1 comment (not including mine). I think it's interesting, but I agree that until there really proven to better I'm hanging with google... Might check into stock though.
- HamburgerH3lper, on 05/17/2009, -5/+0nobody can topple the Google
