- inactive, on 10/18/2008, -1/+19the pictures of wind farms never cease to amaze me ... so cool.
- berserker, on 10/18/2008, -1/+14Wind turbines are not built in multiple vertical levels because it would be difficult to support such a high structure without adversely impacting the performance of the turbines on the lower levels. Structures downwind of a wind turbine generate waking effects that can dramatically shorten the operational lifetime of the turbine. That is one reason why the turbines in a wind farm are spaced so far apart. Also, keep in mind that the structure would have to provide the turbines with rotational freedom so that they can turn into the wind when it blows from different directions.
Its a good idea though, that is exactly the type of thinking we need to make wind a viable source of renewable energy. - perogi21, on 10/18/2008, -1/+12That was the most intelligible explanation ever seen on Digg.
- LennyX, on 10/18/2008, -2/+10Why don't they have multi-storey wind farms? Seems they would be a lot more effective for the space used.
Or maybe I should shut up because I'm not a wind expert. - punx777, on 10/18/2008, -0/+6theres not one word i don't like in that title. :)
- Devrdander, on 10/18/2008, -0/+4Nuclear technology is under heavy export restrictions... Same goes for the likes of cryptographic hardware and other things considered a security risk or liability.
- rjett, on 10/18/2008, -0/+3Not in my backyard! Clean energy? CLEAN ENERGY? Witchcraft I say!
- mohamedmansour, on 10/18/2008, -0/+3thats why it is google maps + sketchup
- JonForTheWin, on 10/18/2008, -0/+2Needs anti-aliasing.
- aliguana, on 10/18/2008, -0/+1that's capitalism for you. If your product can't stand up to competition, then it's your job to make it competitive or suffer the consequences.
- migshark, on 10/18/2008, -1/+2The picture reminds me of that god-awful desktop background that comes as default with Windows XP. I've installed and reinstalled enough copies to be painfully familiar with it.
- emberjohn, on 10/24/2008, -0/+1wow..thats a cool software!
- WomensUnderwear, on 10/18/2008, -0/+1Load of hot air
- slythfox, on 10/18/2008, -0/+1I read two different articles, I think in Wired. One was a freefloat multibladed windmill, attached by a wire. Another was a building with invividual floors that rotate with the wind, generating power as they move, of course!
- happyMensch, on 10/19/2008, -0/+1Wait. What about the Dubai twisty building (the one with the rotating floors) that will have horizontal wind turbines between floors? That's sort of like a vertical tower isn't it?; Berserker, you say: "it would be difficult to support such a high structure without adversely impacting the performance of the turbines on the lower levels." I don't quite see it... If you built a tower with horizontal turbines (like in the Dubai twisty building), how will adding one more turbine at the top of the tower affect lower level turbines??
- pengo79, on 10/18/2008, -0/+0Because you'd be better off making the tower taller and having longer blades. You end up with a larger area to capture the wind, and less complexity.
- pengo79, on 10/18/2008, -0/+0@Culyt: A thin net would be the perfect thing to slow the wind before it gets to the turbine. Also I don't think you realise just how big a wind turbine is. e.g. Vestas V90 has a 90 meter diameter - youtube it and you might reconsider your bird-saving design :)
More about birds and wind turbines is on Wikipedia:

- BSDaemon, on 10/18/2008, -2/+1Buried for being open source.
- inactive, on 10/18/2008, -6/+4Great idea
How about an open source Nuclear plant? - atgmac, on 10/18/2008, -3/+1Sounds like something I can use!
- Culyt, on 10/18/2008, -4/+1Now an you tell me why they don't put thin nets or cages over them to stop people bitching about bird deaths?
☢ - inactive, on 10/18/2008, -8/+1In other news today, a New York software firm has gone bankrupt after sales income fell to zero. Sources say that hippies giving the software away for free were to blame.
