- VanD, on 12/20/2007, -1/+66Now I can talk to my wife in Thailand without using a translator.
- dcharti, on 12/20/2007, -0/+41I can't wait for Google to add some AI to the bots, then we can watch them duke it out when mistranslations run amok.
- inactive, on 12/20/2007, -1/+38That's an awesome idea.. it's something I wanted to do a long time ago as a fun project, but hot damn Google is just on top of everything these days.

- h4mx0r, on 12/20/2007, -0/+15So I can finally have a foreign pen pal now, yay!
- davidleeroth, on 12/20/2007, -0/+13Because pulling out a dictionary in the middle of a conversation in a foreign country isn't exactly "convenient."
- Jalh, on 12/20/2007, -0/+12are you seriously ?
- timo1023, on 12/20/2007, -0/+11So, um, what was going on before?
- RoshanK, on 12/20/2007, -0/+11I wish they would release a google talk client for linux.
- capitocapito, on 12/20/2007, -0/+10Yes, but can Google bring you love?
Wait... - inactive, on 12/20/2007, -0/+9I wish I knew people to chat with using this! Any non-english speaking diggers want to chat?
EDIT: I should probably translate that message first... - mrpink.137, on 12/20/2007, -1/+9This is a cool idea. It bad just too the Google Translator sucking is.
- Toupee, on 12/20/2007, -1/+8I wish they would update the freaking Windows client.
Group Chat, Translation Bots, AIM!!!!! C'mon Google!!! I like the interface a lot more than Pidgin... - sat0shi, on 12/20/2007, -1/+8If that is the Google translation at work, I don't think you'll get very far. Your Japanese translation says: "It would be nice the person who knew used chat, this! Anyone except Diggers that want to chat in English?" Not quite the same, and that was me making it sound better in English than it really is. :)
- Seth024, on 12/20/2007, -0/+6The dutch translation basically means this:
I wish I knew that the people to chat with this! Every non-English speaking divers want chat?
Barely understandible in Dutch. - abuelos84, on 12/20/2007, -0/+5but you *could* put this on an iphone, add some text-to-speech and speech-recognition and voila.
- notouch, on 12/20/2007, -0/+5我想我知道的人聊天用这个!任何非英语挖矿想聊天吗?
That translate into:
I think the people I know use this to chat! Any non-english mine work want to chat? (i guess mine work = digg here) - capitocapito, on 12/20/2007, -0/+5Hopefully, they'll open this up beyond gTalk...
I'd love to have this option available for any service. - PecanHead, on 12/20/2007, -0/+5Allez baiser vous-même, vous piquer arrogante.
- mitchlourens, on 12/20/2007, -1/+5why even learn english?
- solistus, on 12/20/2007, -0/+4Heh, ditto for the Russian; I'm not even gonna try to turn that into comprehensible English. Maybe Google translator bots should stick to Romance languages for now :P
- Q8Jin, on 12/20/2007, -0/+4If I didn't know English I would have looked at you like crazy person if you said that sentence to me in Arabic.
- TomTruelle, on 12/20/2007, -1/+5hey buddy, I speak french and I can tell you with confidence that whichever translator youre currently using is most definitly still in need of some work. Ill translate that portion back into english for you.
"I knew that I wish speak with the people with the help of this! Every non speaking English searcher wish speak?" - a3r0, on 12/20/2007, -0/+3I can't imagine why
- inactive, on 12/20/2007, -0/+3I'm gonna go ahead and take a wild guess that you're American and have never travelled outside your country, or probably even state. I'm also going to assume that you don't realize that in a lot countries (especially in Europe), people that can only speak one language are considered - at the risk of sounding insulting - retarded.
- lordwow, on 12/20/2007, -1/+4Now if I can just get this in my Star Trek communicator... so close...
- kp606, on 12/20/2007, -0/+3The biggest misconception about language... is that a translator can ever replace a full or working knowledge of the language.
Many of you may think that a translator can get by and in instances where you need small basic phrases... it can. But the amount of nuisances that exist within speaking are infinite. If you recorded everything you said/wrote in a single day and then analyzed it, you would be amazed at some of the choices you made in your word usage without even thinking. And you really won't find any of that in a book... it's just a language thing. - canewediggit, on 12/20/2007, -5/+7i believe msn has had this for awhile now. but still, go goog! new and improved methods for meeting brasilian girls on orkut are always appreciated.
- MrCrumbles, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2Dear Lisa,
As I write this, I am very sad. Our President has been overthrown and...[Voice changes] replaced, by the benevolent General Krull. All hail Krull, and his glorious new regime.
Sincerely,
Little girl - TomRitchford, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2"I wish I knew people to chat with using this!" vs "Je savais que je souhaite discuter avec les gens à l'aide de cette!"
The French actually reads: "I was aware that I wished to discuss with people with the help of this!"
"Savoir" is dead wrong here. It means "to know" as in "to be aware of" or "to understand", not "to know" as in "I know a person (who speaks French)" -- that's connaître.
I also don't understand why the word order got inverted here -- particularly since it changed the meaning of the sentence completely!
"Discuter", discuss for chat is also weird -- bavarder is definitely a better word.
I'd probably say, "Ah, si je connaissais des gens avec lesquelles je pourriais parler en utilisant cette truc-la." "Oh, if I knew people with whom I could chat to using that thing there," (pourriais is subjunctive "could") though my French is a bit rusty. - kiiwii, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2me: Ausgezeichnet!
de2en: Excellent! - Jarodd, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2Exactly the reason to why learn a language :)
- inactive, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2(I'm not serious in any way shape or form, don't worry)
- Archon810, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2I think it's an awesome idea as well. And Google was smart enough to make the bots ignore other bots, I tried to make en2ru and ru2en fight each other but they wouldn't :(
On another hand, if anyone understands Russian, check out this nonsense en2ru gave me: http://beerpla.net/2007/12/19/google-helps-break-d ...
For those who don't, it said something like It's delaying Chzhechzhu (which makes no sense at all). Granted, I did misspell 'is'. - secleinteer, on 12/23/2007, -0/+1Kopete works fine for me - I don't see why we need yet another client, especially one that's protocol-specific.
- mediaspree, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Ich ben ein berliner
- MrCrumbles, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Japanese sure is a funny language. Kinda makes you think.
- goatcaca, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1The Spanish and the Italian translations are both ***** as well.
- leerayIG88, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Yo tengo el gato en mi pantalones.
- MattBD, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1I should think there will probably be some absolute classic mistranslations over the next few months. After all, these bots are bound to be quite literal, and some things don't translate well, such as idioms. Check out this article on Wikipedia about Chinglish for some real howlers - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinglish
My favourite is Racist Park = Ethnic Minorities Park - capitocapito, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1That's, like, five levels of possible computer-mistranslation.
- flowersmang, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Divers?
- Lennalf, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1You could write your own bot that simply echoes the translator bots.
- inactive, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Dugg for 'mine work = digg'.
- diggimator, on 12/20/2007, -2/+3Ohhh, I know this one,
あればいいのを知っていた人たちとチャットを使って、この! diggers以外の英語圏でチャットしたいですか?
This translates into:
Using chat with people who would be fine if they knew, you! Would you like to chat in the english-speaking world besides diggers? Attack Pearl Harbor! - grr74, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1Dra til helvete.
- v4vishal, on 12/21/2007, -0/+1Do they offer Elmer Fudd? I wike the new featuwe.
- paladinsama, on 12/20/2007, -0/+1The spanish one>
