- liz4rd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+311. Wait, how come I don't see these chat features you keep talking about in my Gmail account?
We're rolling the new chat features out in stages, so you may not have them in your account quite yet. Thanks for being patient while you wait for your new and improved Gmail account. And unfortunately, the chat features work only in the US-English interface for now. We know, we know... we're getting to the other languages as fast as we can.
Google already told us this.... - Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So a free service didn't translate all of their features into every possible language. Big freaking deal.
- gurgle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2to eric wilson above, id hazard a guess that although they speak english in all those countries, many such as India, Europe and Australia would use the UK way of spelling etc and thus it could be argued more people would use the English (UK) setting..
just letting you know..
and when will americans get over people criticising anything vaguely to do with them.. geez loieez
and yeah like someone else who posted - sure dont instantly introduce something in all languages. i can understand that. but at least make it well known they are available in a different setting.. and dont take over 6 months to introduce them to other languages while adding newer to the US setting.. - rolandog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@thebra...
I care... the rest of the world care. If a user chooses to try out a service, he/she should be allowed to try it out and not be restricted by country or language. - indijay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Holy Lord, I retract my comment above. Its not geography based stuff but language based stuff. As I scrolled down the story, the word deleted items grabbed my attention to make me realize that my language settings are British english, now I will start writing color (instead of most correct colour) to have both the above mentioned features.
- mofomojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm getting tired of this geographically restricted internet stuff
- SsbFalcon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"who cares" is not an opinion, it is a general statement attempting to encompass the opinions of all...
Unfortuantly for you, the redundancy of the English language provides no other explanation... - SirNuke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Imagine that, the localizations come out after the native language.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well I didnt realise this, so Im pleased.
Aside from my slight annoyance at English (US) and English (UK) being options. Surely its English and English (US) - US being a derivative of UK - miknight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is not whining. The submitter is being informational. I, for one, appreciate it.
- hogrod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I could understand if it was just a language conversion problem with the software but in my book if you translate US English to UK English you still have English, so there seems to be no reason for the missing features. google stop ***** around and give everyone the same thing!
- PsychTouch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the chat feature is available only for not secure connection. how can i switch from https:// to http://? firefox switch automatically to https if i type http in the address bar.
- yibble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"...but how difficult would it be to translate to English (UK)....you know...it's the same language with a couple of different spellings."
And some slight diferences in grammar, punctuation is different, and each have their own idioms. So, no, it's not the same language. - Boondoggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Advertising in one language is so much easier. Google would love it if we all spoke the same language.
But Gmail sucks monkey nuts anyway. - indijay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To all those who are cribbing that its old news, why this news wasn't posted before then. I am using English Gmail but still I don't have that 'Delete' button or web-link that flies on the top of emails. All I have are basic email features that were introduced in the beginning.
On the contrary, my wife has got all these features, so its neither language restricted not geographically restricted. (We are NOT in the US) - amigiac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you want the features change the language to English(US) and put up with the zed's and the 'Trash' folder, like you really care if the US can't be bothered to put all the letters in a word.
- ChrisLowder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0helpful
digg + - accidental, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I live in the US. I use gmail in English. I still don't have the chat feature enabled.
- jnareb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To be more exact, the new GMail features are available only if you choose default, i.e. English (US), language.
- Mike89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Exactly, ssbfalcon.
I use(d) English (UK) and everytime a new feature came out I just never saw it and didnt know why. It'd be nice if the interface we use (which has exactly the same text) alerted us to this. - mikae1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This has been the case since Gmail was introduced. Certain features are only available to English (US). "Send mail as" didn't work up until recently now the "Chats" icon and text disappears.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It takes a lot of effort to accurately translate these programs into other languages, in fact for some languages it takes more effort than it is worth. The fact is GMail is still Beta. If you read the Google blog you'll see that they are constantly releasing updates for their products in all sorts of esoteric languages. They'll eventually get around to covering a good majority of them, but you'll have to pardon them for covering the major bases now so that they can work on the inner code. The internationalization comes later. Otherwise, freshen up your English if you need the product that badly.
- matx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dont speak us english. I can only speak uk english ;D
- Bromskloss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You can help out translating Google services yourself:
http://services.google.com/tcbin/tc.py
I was earlier involved in translating Gmail to swedish, but Gmail seems to have been taken down from the list of available projects, so I can't give it a go this time. :-( - sacfdup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ha ha
- Newsvine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Old news. Thanks for posting the link though, it might come handy for those who want Gmail's other features and don't know how to access it.
- nataliej, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ah, that's better. Dugg.
- csansbury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0...but how difficult would it be to translate to English (UK)....you know...it's the same language with a couple of different spellings.
- Bromskloss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0vibble writes: "punctuation is different"
Do you have any examples? - szym, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How is it "geographical restriction" ?? All I need is change my language setting, though not really, because that's how I use it anyway. And I find nothing disturbing in this too.
AFAIK the censorship in China is the first geographical restriction from google, but as we have recently learned, all you need to do is type a different URL in. - yibble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0English (UK) is normally referred to as 'English (International), as it's used by more countries than just those that make up the realm of the U.K.
English US has many older elements of the indigenous (to UK) English, which have evolved and changed form in the UK. - OmegaNine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Look, English is the language of technology. the HTML tags are not in Spanish, programming keywords are not in french. I understand it must suck, but if you are in to tech, you speak English...Its a good bet.
- mdmoya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0From Gmail's help page, http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=33504&topic=8405
"For now, the Gmail chat features are available through the US English interface only"
They're working on it, it's a brand new feature, they'll fix the unsupported browsers and other languages soon, just like they added the other language support previously. - yibble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sure; elipsis, usage of semi-colons and hyphenations to create short breathers. That's a start.
- loudestnoise, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1that's really old. no digg.
- SsbFalcon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0To those who don't care...
Don't bother posting...
Interesting... I was wondering why a few people I know from the UK didn't notice some of these features... though ironically both the English US and UK are exactly the same(of what exists in both) - serra, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This ***** is just like the whole "It's only for the PC" ***** that goes on. Someone is always whining that it isn't made for them, it won't ever stop.

How does Google restrict it? Just get a US gmail account to use.
Eric Wilson - lukas88, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I hope the submitter gets revenge on the US some day, sounds like he needs it!
- TKDWILSON, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1""""

Translation::::::::::::
"If you are going to make something and offer it for free, you should first translate it in every tongue in the world first including dead languages and Klingon just to make sure. After all we have to be all inclusive. Other languages are lucky to have Gmail at all. We are talking about Beta (haha I know but still) services that google is working to improve and using the language that most of the people in the world speak.
Eric Wilson
PS I know someone is going to say, most of the world doesn't speak English, but virtually all the US in percentages speaks English which is 300 million, most everyone in India speaks English +1 billion, Australia most of Japan, most of South Korea, most of Europe. Yeah I bet more than 3.2 billion speak English.
Eric Wilson - diGGerDON, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Will someone please send me a G-mail invitation??? Please send to: diggerdonp@hotmail.com Thank You, diGGerDON
- oleeid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I always have it on English (US) because it isn`t any norwegian version. ;(
- KAMI_no_kodomo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Tis is realy OLD news.
En slowly they are putting the features also in other languitches. I yust tink they have not enaugh translation power. - themulf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Well maybe (insert country here) needs to develop its own better-then-gmail solution! ;)
- TomPetty, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0wow geez. break down and cry.
