In this case it is news worthy in that it is a release to patch major security holes. So of the over 4 million users that are running it at the moment, I'd say they would care and want to update asap.
Also as to applications that block skype packets, if they end up really hindering skype's operation and overly used, guess what would probably happen, skype gets updated and that filtering becomes broken (possibly even made much harder to do).
Until something much better comes along skype will still be worth using.

Gizmo is GREAT, I just pulled off a 4 person interview that was pretty good.
