- DaemonNivas, on 01/25/2009, -1/+63O right. So those users that KNOW they are being monitored will just keep doing same stuff as they did before. Y'know, ThePirateBay, porn, more porn, 4chan, porn, MiniNova, occasional trolling on Digg, etc ...
- NEPats50, on 01/25/2009, -1/+38O noez!
Firefox is going to find out how I am trying to overthrow the government... with uTorrent and redtube. - twiztidsinz, on 01/25/2009, -2/+37http://i552.photobucket.com/albums/jj344/Twiztidsi ...
- inactive, on 01/25/2009, -4/+36They should also request a webcam view of the user using it. So they can see people throwing ***** at the walls waiting for Flash to load or seeing it take down the whole browser.
- Sublex, on 01/25/2009, -0/+24A lot?
- Frixionburne, on 01/25/2009, -0/+20I don't think that the people willing to volunteer for this are porn addicts.
I wouldn't apply, but I commend mozilla on being honest and asking, instead of being comcast. - jordantneff, on 01/25/2009, -5/+19I don't really see the problem with this. Think about the term research and development; in order to develop a better product they have to do research and I'm sure 1% of the people using it won't mind. Besides, most people aren't paranoid old farts that think mozilla wants to steal their credit card info. Besides, as it says in the article, nothing is hidden from you because it's all open source, therefore if you really were determined to know what was being sent to them, you could find out.
- twiztidsinz, on 01/25/2009, -0/+14While you are correct that it is a Red Panda http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_panda
You, sir, apparently don't know http://www.mozilla.org/projects/firefox/firefox-na ... What's a Firefox?
A "Firefox" is another name for the red panda. http://www.bbc.co.uk/nature/wildfacts/factfiles/6. ... - induren, on 01/25/2009, -1/+14Exactly. No one is to know how much hamster porn I or anyone else watches!
- JellyFish62, on 01/25/2009, -0/+11They really don't want to know...
- phike, on 01/25/2009, -0/+11There is no porn on Digg............

- bigbangbuddha, on 01/25/2009, -1/+5<paranoia>
I think I'm twitchy from the past 8 years but this is yet another avenue for domestic spying. I trust Mozilla but I don't trust the monolithic agencies put in place by the last administration.
FTA: "We will never record the actual Web sites that people go to, for example -- we would do a hash on that "
A hash is a pseudo-random number generated from data, like a URL, and isn't reversible (i.e. you can't get a URL from a hash), but say if the government wanted to know who is visiting a specific site, they could hash that sites address and search the DB for it to find the users. And if that URL is not hosted in the US they would have the right to do so.
The only thing that would make this not work is if Mozilla also Hashed the I.P. addresses of the volunteers as well. Then at least the government would be forced to obey the constitution and would have to know who they are targeting instead of doing drag nets.
But again, maybe I'm just still twitchy.
</paranoia> - sexybobo, on 01/25/2009, -1/+5Since i will say no to this i don't feel my privacy will be breached at all.
- tgc1, on 01/25/2009, -0/+4I laughed like a howling banshee after reading your comment. So true!
- LumberingOaf, on 01/25/2009, -0/+4
Sorry, Mozilla. I'd rather nobody knew about my fetish for Peruvian-midget-clown-crisco-lesbian-pickle-drunken-monkey-porn.
Oh... damn. - induren, on 01/25/2009, -0/+3I want to see this Hamster Pole Dance!
Show me where it is! - inactive, on 01/25/2009, -0/+3All of them. It's a hit or miss with your setup. Some of our setups crawl with flash, and the rest of the users don't think anything is wrong with it. And this is with Windows and Linux. Not sure about OSX, never used Firefox on it.
- mbauer14, on 01/25/2009, -1/+4their
- roxgod666, on 01/25/2009, -0/+3What ever happened to the poll?
- ImFrakkinIt, on 01/25/2009, -0/+3Now Google is a company we can trust with our privacy!
- dusanmal, on 01/25/2009, -0/+3There is a problem that has nothing to do with credit card numbers or porn watching...
Problem is that at least Open Source browsers should refrain from going into the morally shady user tracking business. Even for research. Even on just 1% of users. Though there are enough short sighted dimwits who will allow this to happen.
So, what is the problem. Since early days of Spyware companies (and Governments) are ready to pay huge amounts of money for user behavior knowledge. Methods already exist to personally identify the user by his mouse/keyboard/browsing habits. This Mozilla project would allow technology to be developed and tested to do exactly so. Question is who do you believe on the end-game: Google and MS and like who say that this is for your benefit so that they can deliver to you what (they think) you want with great automation OR suspicious minds who see head and shoulders of BigBrother and who see this as much more valuable for tracking people and targeting ads than anything else.
Allow Mozilla to test such system and follow in the footsteps of Google Chrome keyloger "enhanced" browser,... Other browser makers will happily follow. Soon you'll be unable to do anything on the Internet without being identified. Every single computer security expert agrees that anonymity is the keystone of free speech on the Internet. Consequence is not loss of credit card or porn. Consequence is fundamental - loss of freedom of speech on the Internet (and hence likely everywhere else). - Myonosken, on 01/25/2009, -0/+3Wait, what, we're attributing the past to the present now?
- moothemagiccow, on 01/25/2009, -0/+3It's about usability testing. It's a stupid idea, I'll admit. Basically they want to know how layouts affect you and how you react to them.
- SpectreFire, on 01/25/2009, -0/+3I'd hate to be the guys who have to do the monitoring.
*they're looking through an average Digg user's browsing history*
"Oh god... oh GOD... OH GOD!"
*commence sobbing* - inactive, on 01/25/2009, -0/+3They can't handle the truth!
- twiztidsinz, on 01/25/2009, -0/+3i guess those who are burying you cannot understand that transmitting data to 3rd parties about browsing habits would probably be a violation of your companies policy for internet use.
- rikwakefield, on 01/25/2009, -0/+3Exactly what I was thinking.
- ChiffX, on 01/26/2009, -0/+3Touché good sir.
- JakeW, on 01/25/2009, -1/+4What Flash program takes that long to load?
I'm using Linux.. and even on Linux nothing takes that long.. or is that bad lol - asgardshill, on 01/25/2009, -2/+4Cross my palm with silver and I'll consider it.
- burjzyntski, on 01/25/2009, -0/+2i think he means xhamster dot com
- guesserit, on 01/26/2009, -0/+2... and more porn, of course
- the.cloned, on 01/25/2009, -0/+2I'll probably install it at work, but my home machine is a different story.
- Tigerdaz, on 01/25/2009, -0/+2I got dugg down big time the other day for saying pretty much the same as yourself. I cant believe after all these years so many people still trust these big companies. I know Mozilla is not for profit but they still got a turnover bigger than some small coutnries.
Just because its Mozilla and you all love them soooo much doesnt mean they wont screw you over at a later date once they got all this data. All you people saying RTFA it volentary.......Thats at the moment thats just a foot int he door.....
Wake up people and stop being so gulable...... I agree with the poster and we need more TWITCHY people to put an end to this constant barage of spying. - savagemind, on 01/25/2009, -0/+1good thing is they ask for it others never ask.
- Krazeel, on 01/25/2009, -0/+11%? Bah that's only 1,260,000 people (around 1/8th of Belgium's population).
- hadiz, on 01/25/2009, -0/+1They can watch me, I don't care. I'll just have to remember to switch to another browser to watch pr0n.
