- iSeven, on 12/09/2008, -4/+48Another reason why web devs/designers love Mozilla. Micro$H!+, please follow suit and pull the plug on IE 6 already!
- greeniemeani, on 12/09/2008, -3/+44Firefox 2 will soon only be just a memory leak.
- dujkan, on 12/09/2008, -4/+16i would have pulled the plug much earlier, what good is there of version 2.0.0.18 when there is 3.1 out in the wild?
- Raptor007, on 12/09/2008, -0/+11There's no excuse for anyone to be still using IE.
- chris4404, on 12/09/2008, -1/+12Hasn't Microsoft already pulled the plug on IE6 in a way? I mean they can't force people to upgrade to 7/8 the same as Mozilla can't force people to upgrade to 3.
- sgyoung, on 12/09/2008, -3/+13so with that logic, XP is bad compared to Vista?
- htzone, on 12/09/2008, -6/+16I still use Firefox 2 because I absolutely loathe how they changed the URL auto-complete in version 3 (mainly sub-domains popping up when I type in root domains - if I wanted "sub.domain.com" I would have typed "sub."). Maybe they changed this or added a setting for it, if not I'll keep using 2.
- AirRaven, on 12/09/2008, -0/+9Grow up.
- UnWeave, on 12/09/2008, -0/+9On my older home PC (still in frequent use), FF3 runs noticeably slower, to the point where it really is quite annoying, so FF2 is still running on that. Although I am impressed they have kept it going this long, I expected development to stop pretty much immediately after FF3 was out.
- TimDigg, on 12/09/2008, -5/+14FF2 was my least fav FF
FF3 > FF1 >>>>>>>>> FF2
For me FF2 was a memory hog - hadak, on 12/09/2008, -1/+9nesagwa does.
- york2600, on 12/09/2008, -0/+8Blackboard by chance? That thing is such a horrible pile of garbage.
- superterrorizer, on 12/09/2008, -0/+7Then they'd best start fixing some of these annoying bugs in FireFox 3.
- brandita, on 12/09/2008, -9/+16Who still uses 2 anyways?
- imasuperDOTcom, on 12/09/2008, -1/+8Wow. Listen to that elitist banter up above. Geez.
- latrosicarius, on 12/09/2008, -0/+7The truth of the matter is that the awesomebar searching your bookmarks is probably one of the top "features" that prevent people from upgrading to v3. i've heard more complaints about this than any other aspect of FF3.
i applaud mozilla for trying to keep everyone up to date, but if they were actually serious about getting people to upgrade, then they would add a a simple checkbox in Options to disable it.
i don't like it simply because the awesomebar results is always cluttered with bookmarks, when i have a perfectly good bookmark sidebar (with its own filterbox no less) that i prefer to use. - johnnysaucepn, on 12/09/2008, -0/+6For MS, it's not so much what the punters want, but the pressure from the companies using outdated intranet apps and so on. A lot of IE users are corporate.
- inactive, on 12/09/2008, -0/+6IE6 is like, nostalgia dude. I keep it installed in a folder right next to Flight Simulator '98
- Raptor007, on 12/09/2008, -1/+7Wow, I can't believe your "old = bad" example is Windows. Have you not tried Vista?
- inactive, on 12/09/2008, -0/+6Yea, I'm going to upgrade because someone on digg tells me two.
- Antimatter3009, on 12/09/2008, -1/+7I know you probably have no option to upgrade, but you can't honestly expect an organization to continue supporting old technology forever. They've got plenty to worry about with current technology. That said, it's open source so if someone really wanted to keep it going there's no reason they couldn't.
- EntropyFan, on 12/09/2008, -1/+7If they did, you would see everyone around here bashing MS for being evil and forcing people to do things their way.
It really is a no win situation for them.
Frankly, I'm still running NT4 servers and would love it if they still had support (they are still doing what they need to). And I feel pretty good about investing time and money into products that are supported for as long as MS products are, especially now that I don't really have a budget to upgrade ( or to rewrite any internally developed software that will become incompatible).
So as a developer, no, I like getting my monies worth. - drjekelmrhyde, on 12/09/2008, -1/+6If that have a option under tools to cut off the Awesome bar I would cave to 3
- latrosicarius, on 12/09/2008, -0/+4Yeah, i dont see much point in having it search your bookmarks. That's why you have a bookmarks sidebar.
And furthermore, the bookmarks sidebar even has a filterbox in it.
i agree that sometimes it *can* be useful to have bookmarks in the awesomebar, but it's not THAT useful, and sometimes it can get in the way by cluttering the awesomebar results.
There should be a option to not see bookmarks in the awesomebar. - sexybobo, on 12/09/2008, -0/+4They sure as hell try to force the upgrade though.
- JasonHaley, on 12/09/2008, -0/+4I think my mom still uses 2.0. She checks her email and rarely uses the internet for other stuff. Some people just like the way things work and don't want to change. I'm of course the opposite and have to have the latest greatest tech...but that's because it's a hobby. And I understand that I'm outside the average person in terms of tech.
The only reason I'll make my mom switch now is because of the security risks if she doesn't. - bearcat8543, on 12/09/2008, -5/+9is it just me, or does 3 crash more often than 2 ever did?
- BruceAnderson, on 12/09/2008, -2/+6Thank you, that's one of the things I don't like myself. Can't see why you're being dugg down. Oh, wait, I know why: it's because you don't like something the herd has determined to be the Best Thing Ever™. I fully expect to be buried as well for this comment. Oh well.
- BruceAnderson, on 12/09/2008, -0/+4It's awesome if you happen to like the way it works. I don't. I'm not wrong. Neither are the people who like it. We just have different tastes and ideas about how things should work.
- BruceAnderson, on 12/09/2008, -1/+5Actually I still use 2 for one very simple reason: the "awesome" bar. You can't disable it and go back to the way it used to work in pretty much every other browser, EVER. And yes, I know you can turn it off, but it's an all-or-nothing proposition. Turn it off, and you get no recently visited web sites. Turn it on, and you've got to wade through all your bookmarks as well as recently visited sites. Brilliant! How hard would it be to have an option to disable searching the bookmarks? I'm guessing not very, but the FF devs don't seem to think it's worth considering.
- renegadeafk, on 12/10/2008, -1/+5its just you
- AirRaven, on 12/09/2008, -0/+4Windows 9x users'll be left out in the cold by this, too.
Firefox is the last viable option for those poor holdouts.
...As ghastly as the OS family is, it's still used.
Bleh. Firefox 2 should tide them over for another few years- it's hardly going to stop rendering pages. If they're worried about security issues, they wouldn't be using 9x in the first place. - sgyoung, on 12/09/2008, -0/+3See my comment above, ha ha ha, even better would be System 6 vs. 7.5.1
- antdude, on 12/10/2008, -0/+3My dad on his 98 SE notebook/laptop. :(
- kd420, on 12/09/2008, -0/+3*sniff* I remember when it was just a beta. The RC time went by so fast, I should have browsed with it more. And now it's retiring, I guess I'll have to move on...
- qingsong, on 12/10/2008, -0/+3Lots of usefull addons now just work with FF2, many user still use it.
- anagai, on 12/10/2008, -0/+3ff3 still has that printing problem. It prints garbage text at different times. Never got my bug ticket resolved. They seem to have given up and some of us will have to stick to 2.0. My entire company uses 2.0 because of this printing problem. I will be waiting for 4.0 and maybe it will print correctly.
- seldon452, on 12/09/2008, -0/+3I'm on 3.1 Beta 2 right now. Kicks ass (it is wicked fast) and it is totally stable.
- Raptor007, on 12/09/2008, -0/+3I'm not sure why Tim's getting buried; this was my experience as well.
- shumbora, on 12/09/2008, -0/+3oh firefox 2 i cant im going to miss you because if i do my browser might get mad (ff3) so long firefox 2 its been real .
- talonstriker, on 12/09/2008, -0/+3my school's solaris stations (university of maryland) use FF 1.0. I've been begging them to update some of the software, but no one bothers (probably because the linux computers are barely used).
- esidyox, on 12/09/2008, -0/+3Anyways the browser share for 2.0 is just 9%
- richlw, on 12/09/2008, -0/+3There is an option in about:config for turning it off
- svivian, on 12/10/2008, -0/+2Hopefully with Windows 7 quelling the Vista hate, most XP users will finally upgrade and be forced onto IE7 (or 8, hopefully!)
- AirRaven, on 12/09/2008, -0/+2@johnnysaucepn :
Opera still supports Windows 9x? =\
I'm stunned. I thought they'd dropped it ages ago. Great news. - ThirdPrize, on 12/10/2008, -0/+2Whereas IE6 is more of a stuck pixel.
- miloez, on 12/10/2008, -0/+2You do understand that the average end user does not give a ***** about what browser they are using right? Forcing them to upgrade would cause them problems, eventually IE 6 will phase out cause the average user probably cant keep a computer running for more than 5 years, and they will have to upgrade to something that comes with IE7/8.
- sexybobo, on 12/09/2008, -0/+2They don't get any updates for there os why would they worry about no updates for there browser.
- tomis, on 12/10/2008, -0/+2Get a real browser, and upgrade that OS.
- tomis, on 12/10/2008, -0/+2It's all about opinions on digg. Facts do not matter here.
