- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+38You're asking if 3.0 ALPHA is more stable than 2.0 FINAL?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30The new version of FF is going to have even shinier buttons than 2.0
- zachws, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22this is a GREAT improvement for macs... the text is sexy and clearer. they are taking on safari.
- luxbot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18We picked up a version called minefield 3 in the daily night builds at the FF website. Give it a try it seems to run much like FF 2.0 and seems to be faster. Its' called Minefield. www.firefox.com -- Nightly builds.
My Best - Dested, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16=D The stories were true!

Go ahead, see for yourself. That crazy happy face in all its glory. Congrats Mozilla on a wonderful browser. - flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16link where you can get it:
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/?C=M;O=D - norbiu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12any screenshots?
- piwy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11which is why it's an alpha. it's not a final release, most of the changes are under the hood. One of the most important changes imho is that FF finally passes the acid2 test.
- TonyCubed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10To be honest, I haven't ran into a single bug... Don't know what the hell you are doing with Firefox :S
I ain't saying that FF2 doesn't have bugs, just saying that I haven't encounted any, yet *touch wood* - TonyCubed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I believe this time round, they want to fix the memory issues, this was on the road map during the FF2 development anyways...
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15Can someone explain to me what significant differences there are? Looks like it supports vector graphics, which is nice, but that makes it more like... 2.1 doesn't it? To be honest, I can't tell the difference between 2.0 and 1.5.
- argon25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8The biggest change is a new graphics library, Cairo, which speeds things up and opens the door to things like graphic acceleration...
The other big change which has landed on the branch (Minefield) is reflow refactoring which improves the way firefox handles incremental layout of a webpage..
These probably aren't things that are immediately noticeable to an average user, but gives firefox an even stronger base to improve the overall platform and add other cool features - ZaNkY, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10For anyone interested, you can grab a portable copy of Firefox 3 to test. Remember that it's just Alpha 1, so most of the changes are code changes, better standard compliance, better painting, threading model updated, changes to how the DOM is accessed.... under the hood stuff.
Portable Firefox 3 Alpha 1: http://fileho.com/download/1811e3217886/FirefoxPortable3A1.zip.html - phosphodyson, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11@fearcorners
Actually, you're an idiot for calling someone an idiot just because they like to mess around with alphas/betas. It's called an open source "community" for a reason, because if the community of people don't try out bleeding edge software then the project literally will die.
The whole reason why Linux is popular was because of people willing to try out unproven stuff and comment on it. Let me assure you, having people use bleeding edge stuff is a very necessary part of any software development. If it wasn't for people trying out new stuff we'd still be stuck with DOS. - akinder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9That's stupid, so you blocked a significant update to your computer that would help make the explorer shell more secure? I bet anything you'll be in another thread bitching and moaning about how many blue screens you get with Windows XP.
- Mcaruso, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Yeah, let's just stop fixing bugs altogether. I mean, who needs progress?
- tomi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Interesting how the a1 release is Grand Paradiso, but the nightlies are Minefield. At least that's what I found when I downloaded it yesterday.
- tomi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/granparadiso/
That's the a1 release - Gran Paradiso
(I just realized I misspelled it the first time, oops)
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk
And that would be the latest nightly trunk - Minefield. - Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"Can someone explain to me what significant differences there are? Looks like it supports vector graphics, which is nice, but that makes it more like... 2.1 doesn't it?"
The version number isn't set depending on the feature set in an alpha version a year ago from being complete. As for 3.0's planned feature set, I'm not sure it's even completely frozen yet. - doubleblack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Upgrading now, I always like to stay on the latest edge...despite minor bugs...
- bblades, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I agree, 2.0 has turned me off to FF. I like all the add on's, and the customizability, but 2.0 has run slow for me. I still use FF from time to time, but I prefer Safari now
- jnagel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7you haven't been running the real alpha. minefield 3.0a1 was actually a pre-alpha, gran paradiso is the actual alpha that is now running the new gecko engine 1.9a1
- CXUK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"The final version of Firefox 3.0 is expected to be released by the end of 2007."
- polywaffle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Whatever browser I use is my personal choice, not what some opera fanatic thinks I should use.
- jnagel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5FYI, the acid2 test is a test of how a browser handles misrepresented CSS code. not only does it check for CSS compliance, but it checks for how it deals with code that is not compliant. so if it displays the smiley face right, then it passes.
- euth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Hiyo -- the text on the front page of digg is actually kerned correctly in FF3.
- blinkfink182, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@Azur2
I think you may have some malware running around pal. - rowanjl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Right, because not changing a system instead of installing IE7 will make it suddenly unstable and crash? Even though it didn't get changed?
I love logic. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Let's hope it isn't as buggy as 2.0. I've switched to Konqueror because of its crashes and other bugs.
- hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8cd /usr/lib/firefox
rm -r *
Why am I an idiot for what is a personal preference. The latest nightly build works just fine for me for what I use it for, and I like to file bugs which is easy with Firefox. - championchap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4No, you got dugg down because you didnt realise that this is an ALPHA build
Alpha means that it is untested, experimental code.. with newly implemented features and routines.. ones they want to get working, but have yet to finish.
The FINAL build of 2.0 is tested, relatively bug free code that they were so confident that they had properly finished the coding, they released it to the public.
So you see? Asking if Alpha software is less buggy than the last stable release of a piece of software is ridiculous. - pap3rw8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have been using the nightly builds for about 2 months now with no major issues. (biggest issue I have is with the right-click menu acting weird)
It's noticeably faster too. - kotalafiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ jnagel, thank you for answering me instead of just digging me down
@ polywaffle, i use Firefox but accept the truth for what it is, just because they came up with it doesn't make them the best at it - norbiu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3found some, nothing special yet.
http://www.softpedia.com/progScreenshots/Mozilla-Firefox--FINAL-Screenshot-5787.html - clemsontiger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3sounds like you have a bigger problem besides firefox. either that or you were using the 2.0 beta. I love 2.0
- akinder, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Me personally, I think the IE7 update kicked the Firefox adoption rate in the balls, so they're wanting to keep in the limelight as much as possible. Congrats on passing the Acid2 test, although I would think that the numerous memory leak 'features' should be cleaned up first.
- steelphantom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Don't waste your time. It's still got a ways to go before I'd even consider using it on OS X.
- leopardhunter, on 02/18/2009, -0/+2Based on the release notes,
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/firefox/3.0a1/releasenotes/#new
this alpha build of Gran Paradiso doesn't have Places enabled.
http://wiki.mozilla.org/Places
This build has Cairo, however, so rendering is improved. - doubleblack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, it worked fine until I used Nightly Tester Tools to make all extensions compatible...now it won't start. But would recommend to those who don't use extensions, or use those that are 3.0 compatible.
However, I will be giving it another try once the compatibility overriding undos itself, and I'll make them compatible one-by-one manually to find the one causing the trouble...but fine for power users! - Xilon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"if you're a good developer you shouldn't have compatibility issues"
Well think about this... w3c is THE standard, browsers don't make standards, they either adhere to them or break them (like IE). Firefox 3 has had many advances in the way it renders CSS and such, so if you coded strictly to the w3c standards, the next version would FIX some things instead of breaking them...
You should have one _proper_, w3c conforming CSS, and then have other CSS for hacks and fixes, that way you'll be removing fixes instead of constantly changing a CSS file. - piwy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually all my extensions work (mouse gestures, sage rss reader). Just get the nightly tester tools and enable the add-ons.
- prattboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is an alpha version of an upcoming version of Firefox. This does not mean that there will be no bugfixes for version 2.0. In fact, Mozilla supports the two most recent final versions of the Firefox browser with bugfixes and security updates. Right now, Mozilla supports Firefox 2.0 and Firefox 1.5. When v3.0 is released, they'll support Firefox 3.0 and Firefox 2.0
- kotalafiel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3ah ok never mind then that also explains why they've changed the name to grand paradiso
- G33k0ft3chz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Really I don't see why Firefox is better than Opera, or if Opera is better than Firefox. I use both. Also both are alternatives to Internet Explorer. So why must both sides fight?
Oh right, there are fanboys which can get in the way, oh well... - FyberOptic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I nearly did a spittake at the very notion that you think Opera is bloated compared to Firefox. I think you seriously need to do some research, dude. As well as in terms of features.
- G33k0ft3chz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What about Sunbird 1.0?! I'm still running 0.3! I know they are still working on it, but come on!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm sorry to hear I'm not the only one who's had problems with FF2.0, but on the same time it's kindof nice to know I'm not alone.
- chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@Azur2
Assuming that you don't have any malware, which it sounds like you take due precaution, it is likely your profile.
Open your bookmark manager and save your bookmarks to somewhere handy like your desktop. Then make a note of your themes and extensions installed. Delete your profile folder and then upgrade to FF2.0 (optionally uninstalling 1.5 and deleting any left over files).
Windows profile folder: Documents and Settings/username/Application Data//Mozilla/Firefox (delete Firefox).
Linux:
/home/.mozilla/firefox (delete Firefox)
With 2.0 installed, import your bookmarks and add on only the extensions you use and need.
I've had it happen to me once before. Bad extension, corrupted chrome settings... whatever it may be, it is easy enough to rebuild a profile and takes very little time.
Good luck, and I hope this fixes everything for you. - tempusrob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Are you sure that's the real thing dude? I thought FF3.0a1 passed the Acid2 test? What I'm using right now doesn't...
- prattboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm running 3.0a1 on OS X 10.4.8 and it does not appear to pass the Acid2 test. Have the changes to the rendering engine been incorporated into Gran Paradiso yet? Or is this just somehow a Mac issue?
