- HarChim, on 09/03/2008, -7/+125Chrome is open source. Firefox just needs to take Google's code and put it into "Firefox 4." It's probably what Google wants them to do anyways.
- batmanz, on 09/04/2008, -5/+109I like Chrome. I didn't want to like it, but I do. :*(
- Cwo655321, on 09/04/2008, -13/+115i bet you said the same thing about *****.
- Kulakova, on 09/03/2008, -25/+91google is a government project.
for total control - MarkusX, on 09/03/2008, -4/+69I don't know whether I should like Google's move?
I am a long time Firefox user (and fan). Chrome seems smilar to Firefox but not better (yet anyway).
Mixed with Google's marketing and financial powers it could not only become healthy competition, but a replacement for Firefox.
...and IN CASE Chrome is not definitely better when that happens, it will be a step down rather than an improvement.
It will be an improvement for Google, since they probably optimize the browser to their needs, but it won't be an improvement to the user.
Hopefully they can coexist and benefit from each other - but it's unlikely. - kingjafee, on 09/03/2008, -4/+60We are already in the Matrix Google created so just shut up and eat your liquefied human.
- inactive, on 09/04/2008, -13/+69Firefox is one chrome adblock pro extension away from extinction.
- BlaqReaper, on 09/04/2008, -0/+45Google can still pay Mozilla money to promote Google's search engine. I don't see how their current relationship has to be ended with the introduction of Chrome. As long as Mozilla gets the money and Google gets to spread their search engine...it's still win-win right?
- Webnower, on 09/04/2008, -2/+33Firefox finally has some REAL competition, so what's the big deal? You think Opera or IE were really big competitors for them? It's about time we got some different ***** to mix things up.
- eclectro, on 09/04/2008, -1/+31I really don't see why mozilla should even be thinking about this. They need to scrape the good ideas from google and make their browser better. Browser security needs to improve no matter what mozilla thinks.
- peterbye, on 09/04/2008, -3/+29Would Google ever allow chrome to supoprt an adblock extension?
Their fundamental existence is based on advertising. - inactive, on 09/03/2008, -7/+32Ups.. Google tripped up Mozilla
- whiteguysamurai, on 09/04/2008, -5/+30It's simple.
Google wanted to put serious work into making a true modern browser, Mozilla was fine with just being better than IE, and there was no reason to reinvent the wheel, as is the case with most open sourced projects with slim financial backing, they upgraded in increments.
Mozilla wanted good, Google wanted best. - parax, on 09/04/2008, -6/+27I hate the way everyone talks about these things like it's a chess game. Referring to every project or decision Google, Mozilla, or Microsoft make as "moves" or "tactics". We should take things at face value. The people at Google wanted to make a browser so they did. It's not some kind of strategy that everyone needs to adjust to.
The great thing about free software is that people make it because it's what they want. We don't need to analyze everything that happens in the world of Free Software like Sun Tzu overseeing a battlefield.
Mozilla doesn't need to examine it's "relationship" with Google. If they still have business with Google, they'll do business together.
This ***** era of marketing buzzwords must come to an end. Google isn't leveraging their outside-the-box paradigm to bring solutions to their partners by blogging about their AJAX powered Web 2.0 widgets.
These people have trouble understanding what Google and Mozilla are doing because Google and Mozilla are taking action, they're not wasting their time talking about what it means. The monday morning quarterbacks and armchair detectives need to stop analyzing this ***** to death. It is what it is, it's not something we need to investigate and research, it's a web browser that may or may not even be any good. - BlaqReaper, on 09/04/2008, -2/+23Awww, was it something it said?
- vat0r, on 09/04/2008, -1/+20Nobody needed an article to tell them this.
- IndigoMoss, on 09/04/2008, -3/+21As long as Google sticks to web standards, I'm all for it. It's when a giant company tries to push proprietary technology as a pseudo standard, is when the problems start happening (Ala Microsoft).
- inactive, on 09/04/2008, -5/+23careful what you wish for....
- solidus636, on 09/04/2008, -1/+19Competition is good for the consumer.
- inactive, on 09/04/2008, -3/+21I run a fairly popular non-techie blog and only about 5-10% of my readership uses IE
Just a matter of time... - doctordbx, on 09/04/2008, -3/+20Well here's the cupcake sunshine.
Chrome won't erode the marketshare of IE, but it will seriously erode the marketshare of Firefox. - benologist, on 09/04/2008, -3/+19Because Google doesn't want to just be a contributor they want to control the project.
- GreenDots, on 09/04/2008, -1/+15Chrome is good, no doubt about it. The problem for me is that it feels like 'web 2.0 for the desktop'. Ironic, eh?
It feels like a lot of great new ideas mashed together, but it has no depth. Its early days yet, and with community plugins it'll probably end up (functionally) just like FF3, with tabs the wrong way round and proper tab threading.
The JavaScripting engine is exactly what Google needs to progress its web apps, but they dont seem to have had much confidence in the steps the FF team were taking towards their own javascript optimisation. Which, coincidentally, looks to be faster than V8, and its not even 'beta' yet. - fokov, on 09/04/2008, -1/+15Well if you look at the owners, they were well connected. Not just some kids in a garage.
- vawksel, on 09/04/2008, -2/+14If you understand how dramatically different Chrome is, you'll understand why they did it the way they did.
Don't just look at the skin. It's a whole new browser architecture. They might as well have started from scratch, they'd have to throw away almost all of Firefox to do what they did. - yerrago, on 09/04/2008, -3/+15The relationship will be better I think.
Google made Chrome as a proof-of-concept:
There! See what I mean. I can do it. So can you! Now do it and I'll help you by giving you the source code. I want Google Gears working in Firefox. And if you won't make it work, I'll go ahead and do it with Chrome.
So Firefox will become better, and Google can continue with its job of developing more powerful web apps.
I like Firefox and have nothing against them but Google may feel they are not moving and adding capabilities fast enough for Google. There is the veiled threat by Google that if they don't move to the tune of Google, Google will just go ahead and do Chrome. But it's a lose-lose for them both. Google will need to hire expensive teams to do what Firefox is doing, and spend less time on web apps development. And Firefox will have less funding and support from a big provider.
Hope it won't end up that way as a divided competition will have Microsoft driving a stake through them. - cheeseplease, on 09/04/2008, -4/+15Cwo wins today's tax-free internet!
- f00bar, on 09/04/2008, -1/+12and then, as the new shiny chrome browser appeared on the screen pavelma said to his peers:
- "I don't think I can intentionally crash Chrome even if I wanted to!!"
Staring blindly at each other, they all nodded as pavelma typed the magic string in the url bar.
pavelma typed :% and pressed enter. The riots that followed are too gruesome to describe. - Rudegar, on 09/04/2008, -0/+11will that mean the next ff have altavista as default search machine? :P
- wpyh, on 09/04/2008, -0/+11Won't be easy -- for one, their HTML and Javascript engines are entirely different.
- inactive, on 09/04/2008, -1/+11its simple, 85% of computer users use a> what they are used to and b> whats already installed on their box. I'd say 75% of them have no idea how to install a program and nearly that many have no idea there are other browsers to choose from.
***** I gave a guy new icons for his windows xp one time, the first thing he said was "what operating system is this?" I mean he literally did not recognize the computer anymore with one small cosmetic change!
Microsoft relies on peoples ignorance and unwillingness to change, its built into their business model. - Webnower, on 09/04/2008, -1/+11All in for Netscape 4.7!
- harris2004, on 09/04/2008, -1/+11it doesnt matter what Google thinks, Mozilla will be on top for ever. Average Firefox user is not dumb enough to think Chrome is some kind of a super browser from Google.
- inactive, on 09/04/2008, -0/+10it's open source. anyone can do anything with the code.
- Unyoked, on 09/04/2008, -1/+11Chrome and Fire fox are open source so competition isn't really what i would call it. more like destructive collaboration. If it really beats FF that badly they will just recognize when they are beat and implement the better code no real winners or losers both browsers should at least ideally, share what is best from both. IE however is screwed.
- rabidbob, on 09/04/2008, -2/+11Gasp! Such a rebel!
- Webnower, on 09/04/2008, -1/+10IE is destined to remain the hated stepchild of companies who rely on it... Other than that, yeah. IE is *****.
- NSResponder, on 09/04/2008, -0/+9I don't care if it dies, I just want it to drop enough in market share that lazy-ass web operators can't get away with making their sites IE-only anymore.
-jcr - inactive, on 09/04/2008, -0/+9...tastes just like chicken!
- cheapotheclown, on 09/04/2008, -3/+11Deja vu.... Microsoft vs Netscape repeating itself, as Google vs Mozilla 10 years later.
- ha3er0, on 06/16/2009, -2/+10contributing to the code base doesn't mean it will end up in the final build. Google clearly has a different vision with browsers and it is nothing like FF. I am a long time FF user too (and a web designer/developer); FF is an awesome browser without any doubt. But I have to give this round to Google Chrome, even as a beta this is an absolutely amazing browser. I don't think I can intentionally crash Chrome even if I wanted to, but ever since I upgraded t FF3 it crashes quite often (I only use Firebug and grease monkey plug in). If I can use these two plugins on Chrome, I see myself using Chrome all the time.
- Webnower, on 09/04/2008, -0/+8Google isn't working with Mozilla on this one, dude. I don't see why Firefox can't steal the good bits of code to make their own platform better, but Google isn't proactively helping Firefox evolve.
- fokov, on 09/04/2008, -0/+8but if it is against the EULA, then they can't distribute it.
- Webnower, on 09/04/2008, -0/+8That 80 percent are just soccer moms and oblivious grandparents who can't figure out how to open email attachments.
Exactly what sites are these 80 percent using? I run three website that do quite well and my stats show that only 3 percent or so of those people use IE... The rest use Firefox or Opera. - Webnower, on 09/04/2008, -0/+7No, they'll use Ask.com
- danielsamuels, on 09/04/2008, -0/+7No, they'll use cuil.com
- metalmarious, on 09/04/2008, -0/+7IE has to get a lot better because it really sucks right now,
I hate to admit it but (doctordbx is right) chrome seems to threaten FF and Opera users more than it does IE users (cause most of them down know what the hell they are even doing on the web as long as they can get to facebook)
Chrome will only reach out to people with IE that still use google as a search engine (if google advertises it's new browser)
I don't want to give up my FF :( but chome has made the switch so easy x_x
I love open source but chrome is open source too x_x
but chrome needs to get a bunch of add ons first, until then I will ignite the web with FF3 - WillyWonka, on 09/04/2008, -2/+9Google pays Firefox money for people using their search. They just extended their contract til 2011 a few days before Chrome was announced.
The Firefox guys make Millions of dollars off of the deal. -
