- johlin, on 10/12/2007, -13/+42Those toolbar icons are so much uglier than the current ones. Too glossy and totally wrong colors. I don't like the tabs at all either. The address bar was okay, but the rest isn't better than the current standard theme at all.
- crilen007, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26I don't want the close button, middle mouse works perfect.
- myboot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Their mock-up reminds me of my favorite theme: Noia (extreme). Given that Noia has consistently been among the most popular themes, I think it makes sense for them to mimic it. You can't please everyone. That's why the browser is skin-able through themes.
- Teridon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Quick, honest, question -- does anyone actually use the "Go" button?
- kalphegor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Yes, on a tablet with a stylus.
- D4RKfantasy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I really think that they should take a page out of Camino's Book... That is a slick browser. Even Shiira would do.
- heavyd14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11# In the Address Bar type “about:config” and press Enter.
# Right-Click and select New->Integer.
# A box requesting the Preference Name will popup and you should enter “browser.tabs.closeButtons” (without the quotes). Press OK to continue.
# Now you need to select the type of close button you want: 0 - display a close button on the active tab only, 1 - display close buttons on all tabs, 2 - don’t display any close buttons, and 3 - display a single close button at the end of the tab strip (Firefox 1.x behavior). After entering the value corresponding to your preference press OK again. - masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15I agree. The new tabbar looks more like something that got stuck inbetween the webpage and the browser. It needs to blend in to the toolbars a lot more.
And the buttons are awful, specifically so the "Home" button. - gookie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11The tab bar reminds me of Netscape 8.1
And am I seeing Corbel font in there (address bar & tabs)??? - snipes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Your accuracy's that bad?
- superal1394, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11At least they finally put a close button on the tabs
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9You can remove those yourself.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11The Refresh and Stop button need to be the same thing.
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Looks to me like they're making FireFox Vista-ready, as far as eye candy goes.
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11While I still like the current Firefox look better, I prefer Camino's design almost infinitely more than Firefox 2.0's.
http://www.caminobrowser.org/images/screenshots/main_window.jpg - bennybertow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Why are the tabs separated? What happens if I click in between two tabs?
- Zero456, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Remember: This is a mockup, there is still work to be done on it.
- Noren, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6From my observations, it is people who are new to the internet, computers, and technology in general that take advantage of these seemingly extraneous UI features. I suspect it is easier to teach people that keyboard = input and GUI = actions, therefore, when you want to visit Amazon you type in the URL in the address bar and hit the Go button. Once they are more comfortable with their tools, they start to feel encumbered by the GUI and begin to learn the keyboard shortcuts.
It really is the same argument with the copy and paste icons. I, myself, remember learning to use those features by the toolbar buttons in elementary school, and by high school, cmd/control+c was so ingrained in my memory I have to stop and think what those toolbar buttons actually mean. - RandomWhim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Sure do. When I'm just using my mouse to browse, it's easier to click go once I've pasted an address to the bar then to pull out the keyboard.
I think we GO users are in the minority though, and I would gladly use one of the many other methods (with no complaining) if they ever get rid of it. - jbrackett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6They are asking for input here:

One thing that looks off to me is that the close tab buttons seem to be highlighted from directly above whereas everything else seems to be lit from the upper left. Also the live bookmark RSS icon is different than the RSS icon in the address bar. I wonder if that is intentional.
I'd also like to see how the back/forward/stop etc. look when moused over. - Looshi, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Boy this is a tough crowd. I think the design isn't going to win any awards, and certainly won't set the world on fire, but it is at least an improvement. It looks generally cleaner and nicer than the current default, which is all you can expect. If it is that bad to you, just skin the damn thing.
- pibby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I agree- way too glossy. Guess I will have to continue using a theme instead of the default.
- mankyd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Yes, if I'm copying and pasting urls from a document/webpage/conversation. Sometimes it's just easier. Mind you the current version has an option toggle it off and on. I would assume ff2 does as well.
- Ythan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Actually I use the Paste and Go extension. But if it didn't exist yes, I would use the go button regularly.
- Jozer99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Looks better than it does now, although I still don't like the icons, they are too Linux-y for Windows. I really like the grapple theme for Mac OS X (is it still the default theme for OS X firefox?) I wish someone would do a decent port of it to Windows (I know there are ports out there, but none of them are very convincing and they all have bugs).
The tabs, URL and search boxes look much nicer though.
I'm not really one to talk about style, as my Firefox Installation looks just like IE 6.0, ostensibly to fool my boss, who believes that Firefox will fry my work system and that I shouldn't use it. - iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5the close button on tabs is for laptop users with only two buttons.
- heavyd14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I agree, the problem is most apparent on the far left, there is just too much wasted space there.
- alphageek101, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The only theme I've used for the past couple of years is CatThief's Mostly Crystal. Few people have heard of it for some reason: http://www.tom-cat.com/mozilla/firefox.html
It has userChrome.css options for having rounded corners on the search box / address box, and lots of other customization options. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yes, there is something in about:config to disable the x's on individual tabs
- Mcaruso, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Remember that those mock-ups are for Windows. Firefox uses a different theme for OS X.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I think it looks much better than the current theme. The home icon could use some work, but it's getting there. It's only a mockup, tons of things will still change, so stop complaining :)
- Computer_Kid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3ooo... shiny.
- bluephoenix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5looks like they took a few hints from the new IE7 on a few features...nothing groundbreaking here though...but I guess there's no reason to fix something that isn't broken in the first place
- Sentinel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I really like the new address bar and search bar. The only thing I don't really like are the tabs. They seem a bit bigger than they need to be.
- dmoney06, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It looks exactly the same, just shinier.
- ehmjay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I must say I love the new look. It will blend in very nicely with my mac. Also blends in nicely with Vista. As long as it doesn't slow firefox down I digg it!
- chesh2000pro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Thanks ryanryanryan! It's a rare privilege to get to work on a project like this.
- Ashiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This looks like a minor evolution of the existing theme. Personally I think it needs something much more revolutionary and ideas for such a shift could come from other very nice-looking browsers such as Camino, Safari and Mozilla. Even looking at the most popular themes on UMO show this is lacking in 'va va voom'.
- imdamaverick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5They really need to get rid of "Getting Started" and "Latest Headlines"
- mankyd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you use the small icons instead of the default ones, it will make a difference, (I used the small icons myself.) Also, if they make the text boxes larger vertically, they have to make the font bigger to compensate. A bigger font means less visible text while you type.
- DevilsFan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'l stick with Qute.
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/7/ - sephiroth965, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I absolutely hate every firefox theme out there except for two: default and "Smooth Alternative" http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/28424583/
- kmgerich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3We released the source artwork to the Mac and Windows Firefox 1.x default themes so it should be easier to do ports now that the Illustrator and Photoshop files are available.
http://kmgerich.com/2006/07/11/firefox-browser-ui-artwork-released/ - Zerocool82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I love how they redesigned the tabs. It' now easier to see which tab your on. And the overall theme is great for the 2.0 event.
- RandomWhim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I love it! A very nice refresh of the default theme. I just hope the end result looks as good as the mock ups (with problems like gaps between tabs fixed of course).
Hopefully the current default will come bundled as well (just not default anymore) so everyone can be happy. - cmer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Flock is now my default browser and I love it... oh, and it looks damn good too! :)
- MrViklund, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Looks like it will doo great on Windows Vista. I like it.
- micro506, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes, but on some notebooks, it can be a bit of a hassle to click them both. Nothing major, but I would still greatly prefer a close button.
- afzilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It is not similar in any sense, other than it is a firefox skin
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I like it. Very pretty. Would look great when I get Vista.
