- tropican8, on 11/15/2007, -1/+81Miro is NOT "kind of an opensource clone of joost." It's a combination podcasting/broadcatching video player.
- wisewaif, on 11/14/2007, -1/+36I stopped using the Democracy player about a year ago because it was clunky. I recently started using Miro, and have been very impressed. It is now the default way that I grab video, and all my feeds are no longer in iTunes.
- nkoszyk, on 11/15/2007, -1/+22I've been using Miro for a few days now and it's excellent.
- motang, on 11/14/2007, -2/+19Sweet, Miro is sweet player! Keeps getting better with newer releases.
- PhrosTT, on 11/14/2007, -1/+18miro is a descendant of democracy. it's the latest version or a branch or something. anyway it's built upon the same code.
- xivulon, on 11/14/2007, -0/+12"Miro is kind of an opensource clone of joost."
Wasn't Miro, previously called Democracy Player, out way before Joost? So if anything Joost is a clone of Miro and not the other way around... - Laxaloot, on 11/14/2007, -1/+11not to mention, miro (aka democracy) was alive way before joost.
- tastethevenom, on 11/14/2007, -0/+10Note that the player download right now is really slow. Hopefully a torrent will turn up soon.
- chrisbarr, on 11/14/2007, -2/+10sweet!
- Bamborzled, on 11/14/2007, -1/+7Their comparison is still weak except in the form of "open" media versus "proprietary and closed" media. The distribution method and the technology behind both of them is completely different.
- victorycig, on 11/14/2007, -1/+7Visit http://tvrss.net and add the RSS searches to Miro as channels, and you've got yourself a nice little IP Tivo. Also, check out Hometown Baghdad, one of the channels often featured on the Miro guide. Great, first person accounts of life in Baghdad today.
As an aside, have Leopard users been having some serious trouble with Miro .9.9.9? I installed 1.0 and haven't yet had it crash on me... - nailer, on 11/14/2007, -0/+4I've been using Miro constantly for two months and had no problems using other Bittorrent apps at he same time (current Ubuntu)
- blueZhift, on 11/14/2007, -0/+4Yes indeed, Miro used to be called the Democracy Player. I'm glad to see that they've finally reached the 1.0 release. I may give it another look. The old Democracy Player was always very unstable on my Windows XP box.
- Brady, on 11/14/2007, -1/+5Seemed like it could be a nice program, though the very first video I attempted to play caused the program to crash. It was just a simple xvid file. Looks like in time it could be a joy to use, but I suppose I'll have to pass on it for now.
- Bamborzled, on 11/14/2007, -2/+6Miro = VLC + prettier interface.
- Bamborzled, on 11/14/2007, -1/+5Apparently antivirus software programs still jump the gun on compression methods used by installers.
You should consider switching. - Laxaloot, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3seems to be workin for me,
- anthaneezy, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3BTW, if you go to your Folder Options (Tools, Folder Options, File Types), you can change the association to which your programs follow. As in you can keep Miro, and have your .torrent files associated, and opened up, with which ever program you want. In this case, whichever program you used before Miro to download torrents.
- velvethead, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3Actually VLC is built into Miro. It is the video playback engine, so technically you're not replacing it. What Miro provides is a multi use application, fusing a RSS (podcast) reader, BitTorrent client, Video Viewer, and Library into one application.
Some call this bloat, I call it integration. Judge for yourself... - orbz, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3I've been using Miro for a bit now, it's pretty good in most respects but I do find it really demanding on my system. If I really want either to work properly on my MacBook Pro, I need to choose between running Miro or Firefox. As a torrent app, it's unnecessarily unwieldy and lacking the features of a proper standalone, and now my system is defaulting to Miro instead of Azureus (an old version, since they of course also "evolved" into a behemoth video program instead of just knowing their place).
- inactive, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3"...an opensource clone of joost."
Oh please! Miro is more than that, Joost just happen to have an impact on the media, some people call it buzz... - shahruz84, on 12/17/2008, -5/+8explain this page: http://www.getmiro.com/articles/miro_vs_joost.php
- andrewgreve, on 11/14/2007, -5/+8Come on, people, it was a joke! Digg me up cause it's funny.
- lyso, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3Try TVShows + Transmission:
http://tvshows.sourceforge.net/ - hddigger, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3That's funny. I went to "getdemocracy" yesterday to get the latest version, at I was re-directed to getmiro.com. Guess I have perfect timing. First time I used it in a year.
- RobotBuddha, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3I hate to be a toolkit advocate, but I really wish they'd have gone with QT4 bindings for some scripting language. What they're using xul for doesn't seem worth the extra bloat, QT4 has proven great for embedding video players within it, and VLC itself has moved to QT in their development branch.
- stmiller, on 11/14/2007, -0/+3Yes Democracy Player IS Miro. The reason they changed the name was to distance the project from any political implications.
- mortsahl, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2Been using Miro on Ubuntu (7.04 and now 7.10) for a few months with no problems ... playback is fine.
- postalblowfish7, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2whit
- thenotself, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2You can use it to get podcasts and vodcasts. You can use torrent RSS feeds to grab tv shows or other videos, which treats them as if they were podcasts so they are much easier to receive. It helps you organize your videos the way iTunes organizes your music.
I agree, any comparisons to Joost are weak - they are only similar in that both provide channels for youtube and other video sites, as well as some commercial channels. - NinjaBoy, on 11/14/2007, -2/+4No it IS democracy. They just had to change the name after they made it faster, because people still associated the name with a bad slow player.
- wetdirtmud, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2waht?
- inactive, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2Hope its a bit quicker on my G5 than previous versions
- 1LordAnubis, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2wow, miro is awesome, first time i've tried it and I am very happy
- Aythun, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2The 0.9.9.9 preview seemed to be pretty clunky, so I just started subscribing to vidcasts through my feed reader. I might try this version if they finally get a gentoo ebuild out...
- xivulon, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2Miro uses vlc... At least on windows.
https://develop.participatoryculture.org/trac/demo ... - happytedium, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2I tried Miro earlier, not long after I got my MacBook Pro, but I ended up falling back to good old VLC. I suppose I'll try 1.0 but I think it really depends what you're going to use it for. I don't think I'd really use any of the features that Miro has that VLC doesn't. Can any similar-minded torrent freak convince me otherwise?
- ours, on 11/16/2007, -0/+2Why? You can set download limits like a minimum of free drive space and set watched videos to be removed automatically after X days.
- exspasticcomics, on 11/14/2007, -0/+2actually democracy player (i.e. miro..) was out waaayy before joost. -now if joost would just release a linux version....
- inactive, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1Miro is better, try it out, BOTH and you'll see what I'm talking about.
- inactive, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1Ok, I admit it, I laughed at this one :D
- boshuda, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1Ive had a little experience with Miro and not much of it good.
My need for it was a youtube/google downloader to put videos I like on my Ipod. Simple.
Very clumsy interface, and it seems to have an identity crisis bundling/coming with a Torrent downloader. Makes sense, since some torrents contain media which can be played in Miro, but I normally use Torrents for freeware apps or games which have no place in Miro. It doesnt work for alot of videos outside of Youtube, and it wouldnt even grab Youtubes at all. But that may not be Miros fault.
All in all I like it, but I would have liked it to be a bit more user friendly and now exactly what its for and focus on that.
My 2 cents. - Gambit89, on 11/16/2007, -0/+1Have you checked on bugzilla? It's currently updated there instead of in sunrise.
http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=131527 - headphonedude, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1Just out of curiosity, is this a program you would use to replace VLC viewer?
- dezman2003, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1thanks that mirror was like 10x faster.
- underburn, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1Best two applications EVER.
- Z_Man, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1It's very slow on my G5, it always has been and I bet it always will be.
- ours, on 11/16/2007, -1/+2I guess I've missed VLCs channel-finding and RSS download capabilities. They must be hidden deep down I guess.
- Lexor, on 11/14/2007, -1/+2Seems like there is still no support for the Apple remote control :(
Otherwise, Miro on my Mac Mini has opened my eyes to video podcasting. Strongly recommended, particularly on the Mac and particularly for recent Mac owners.
I blogged about it here. - headphonedude, on 11/14/2007, -0/+1Thank you for the clarification, i did download it and I see what you mean. Opening this program is more like turning on your TV, but better in many ways. I don't think a program like this would have worked more than a couple years ago and its only going to encourage internet video even more. Maybe i'm over thinking it, but i've messed with some other internet tV programs and this is the first one that makes sense to me.
