- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -3/+42Ah yes....a much simpler time before DRM, WGA, and getting locked out of your own computer.
*sigh* - saeglopur, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26In 2095. It's the next Windows after Vista y'know.
- brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17At that period, Apple was in such bad of shape that slinging mud at them would have look like kicking an 8-year-old while he was down.
- treelovinhippie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15I think he inserted his floppy without consent.
- bnyoung11, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13When does this come out?!?
- iman79, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14...and they don't make enough already?
- slicedoranges, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Also, coincidentally, a time before mass piracy.us
- barleycorn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13i liked it. neat music goin on. looked very un-microsofty too for some reason.

What next, once Linux have viruses than Apple gonna thrash talk that too? Apple fanboys don't make the situation any better either, all they do is try to convert other Windows users to use a Mac, like a freaking Scientology cult (no offense to Scientology members). Most viruses are brought on by the ignorant user not bugs in the OS. I don't think Mac OS has zero bugs, all OS has security holes in it. Windows of course will always be the #1 target, holding 90% of the computer market share, hackers will always find and try to exploit security holes in Windows. This Apple opinion in the commercials they make is fundamentally flawed and misleading.
- dDuk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Wow, that is the first Microsoft advert I have ever liked, the animation reminded me of Picaso and the music was pretty darn good too for 95!
- CrispyPassion, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Did anybody else notice that Batman-ish sound after they showed the Start button? It seemed like a big "POW" was gonna flash on the screen.
- b3mus3d, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I see you're posting that from a wii, slicedoranges :D
- phantonym, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9AmigaOS had in 1985 almost everything Windows first got in 1995 (pre-emptive multitasking, multithreading, support for long filenames etc.) Microsoft is responsible for stifling the computer revolution for at least 10 years.
- inobla, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Notice the Microsoft commercial didn't try to score any mud-slinging points by bashing Apple.
- Gatesophile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Dude, that was groovy.
- FreakyPhil31, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11Win95 + multitasking = BSOD!!!
- av4rice, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Forget multitasking; I want those 400 dining room suites!
- mtzmtulivu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"If Windows were running a race it would be the one hobbling over the finish line 2 days after the race ended, while the PR/Marketing department spins it as a triumph."
well, if morewill show up two days later and cheer them on as if they were the first to cross the line, what should the PR?marketing do? dont take the opportunity?
as crap as people say windows is, they managed to get ahead of the game and the rest is history ..we may pick and choose what/how to bash windows/microsoft, but they won ..that is, if you think having around 5% market share is adequate to cause "real" competition .. - mtzmtulivu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3
"At least Microsoft created a commercial that didn't thrash talked any other OS." Microsoft is in front commanding more than 90% (being generous here) desktop OS market ..trashing anybody will be extrem;y bad for them.
on the other hand ..
apple has what? 5% market share?? ..their whole slogan is "think different" for this to work, they must be different from something and windows just happen to fit the bill at this time ..if microsoft crashes on its own weight and disappear into oblivion ...apple will pick whatever will take its place(linux??, bsd??) and start comparing themselves to it ..remember, they have to be different from somebody
"What next, once Linux have viruses than Apple gonna thrash talk that too?"
It will depend, linux move past them and become big enough to compare themselves with, they will ..apple fans cant seem to appreciate what they have unless they look down on their neighbors running other systems .. - 2Deluxe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Oh man things have changed... wait..
- raldz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4the commercial is nice.. did they edited it using a mac?
- CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Seriously...
KEEP CRYING FANBOY. (and second place isnt so bad. is it?) - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"if you think having around 5% market share is adequate to cause "real" competition .."
Microsoft thinks so. Look at what happened when a browser took 10% of their market share, they completely re-wrote IE. When Apple introduced an OS that now has about 2-3% share, Microsoft completely re-wrote Windows. - billyoneal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2And, yet, the ENTIRE WORLD bought thier software! People, M$ got to where it is because PEOPLE bought what they made. If it was so inferior, then why did it take off?
- dch111, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Heh, Windows 95 is plug n' pray.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnDQI04V17o&mode=related&search= - D3adKl0wn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2any of you remember the "friends of windows 95" video that came out during the launch of win95? it had Matthew Perry (Chandler Bing) and Jennifer Anniston (Rachael Greene), as well as the guy who played the Super in the apartment building on friends..
it consisted of Matt and Jen going into the office of some executive and messing with his/computer and being WOW'd by the usability of Win 95 and the Super-guy came in to install a printer and was marveling about the plug and play.
it was such a sad little video, but i'd like to see it again just for kicks.. lol
edit: found a IMDB page about it.. lol.. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0210840/ - HsoKinees, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2treelovinhippy - "I think he inserted his floppy without consent."
ARGHHHHH !! you just reminded me of that painful "don't copy that floppy" video >__< - MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I certainly like this a lot more than the "Start Me Up" Rolling Stones garbage.
- louse101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's trippy, but I like it.
- sparkmonkeyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Haha, that was awesome. But why did they use beige for the background? Who ever picked that color for computers.
- Coronagold, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Wow. Who made that $10 commercial? Gerald McBoingBoing?
- nomore, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Agreed. Mac OS didn't even get Multitasking until 2000/2001 with the introduction of OS X. Amiga was far ahead of its time, and even now there are features that Amiga OS has which are rather unique such as system-wide datatypes. I also miss the Amiga's assign command to create virtual drives... and most of all I miss the RAM disk. Why can't they include a RAM disk in modern operating systems?
The MS commercial here shows just how big a gap there was between different computing platforms. - Naga10, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2My dad still brags about how awesome the AmigaOS is. Especially when I had XP.
Now I have the upper hand with OS X. Muahahaha! - dch111, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Win95 + plug = pray!!!

You're welcome. - DelMonte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It wouldn't be surprising, as the Windows 95 logo on the packaging was made on a Mac using Freehand.
- MonumentMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This commercial really takes me back.
Back in the early 90's, simply OWNING a computer was considered to be supremely geeky. These Windows ads were the first mainstream ads to tout computers as being somewhat cool and hip, and it marked a massive change in the public perception of computers. - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"And, yet, the ENTIRE WORLD bought thier software!"
They bought it because that's what the computers they bought came with. That's like saying IE won the browser war because people chose it. Kind of hard to "choose" something that's given to you without you asking. - nusuni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder if the makers of the commercial had a bit too much acid in their system?
"Woa dude, pretty colors!" - billyoneal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Probably wasn't $10 in it's time
- dobesov, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@brstilson
you know they never made the claim to have invented multitasking, only that "Personal Computers" had a hard time multitasking before windows95. Honestly did you listen to the "words" in that commercial. Xerox star and apple Lisa were never PCs they were overpriced failed business machines. And if you want to go with the common definition of a PC from that era, it would be an IBM compatible x86 machine.
Wikipedia:
The classic definitions of innovation include:
1. the process of making improvements by introducing something new
2. the act of introducing something new: something newly introduced (The American Heritage Dictionary).
3. the introduction of something new. (Merriam-Webster Online)
4. a new idea, method or device. (Merriam-Webster Online)
5. the successful exploitation of new ideas (Dept of Trade and Industry, UK).
6. change that creates a new dimension of performance Peter Drucker (Hesselbein, 2002)
By those definitions, especially number 6 I think we can agree that Microsoft's implementation of preemptive multitasking into the IBM PC and into the home computer market at large would be considered innovative. - grayapple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Anyone else notice how that looked kinda like the Windows XP flag?
- nomore, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lw_HwlWJ41Y
- bdub92, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3OOOh i can multitask by....umm...running DOS...and umm...minesweeper?
- Pundan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I had no idea one could spin/resize four differently colored boxes at the same time, now that's flashy!
- mc7winkie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Why is this in the software section? It is specifically a video and should be put in the videos section. This has been happening far to often lately.
- yowhat2002, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1windows 95...ahhh the nostalgia...
i still run a copy of it on an old laptop just so i can boot it up and listen to those awesome start up noises - brstilson, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5I love how Microsoft pretends to invent things. Computers were easily multi-tasking since the 70's with the Xerox PARC machines, then the Lisa in the early 80's. It's actually kind of sad that it took Microsoft a so long to introduce something that, well basically almost all other OSes already had.
Microsoft's Definition of "Innovation:"
"Look, we finally caught up to decade-old computer trends!"
If Windows were running a race it would be the one hobbling over the finish line 2 days after the race ended, while the PR/Marketing department spins it as a triumph. -
