- robbh66, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Researchers at Xerox PARC will disagree with you on who invented the GUI.
- Luftwaffle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Ubuntu on 20% of desktops? Tell me, what's the color of the sky in your world?
- robbh66, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Also your assertions that MS needs to start over because the code isnt clean and the high ram requirements are unfounded. While I'll agree that they should start over at some point, they've done a decent job considering how much harder of a job they have than apple does. MS has to create an OS that will run on literally millions of different computer configurations and varions. Apple knows *exactly* the hardware that their software will run on. Makes it a tad easier for apple to make an OS.
- Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13You've got to learn how to use the 'reply' button. Because now you just look like some crazy guy writing totally random things.
- Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -13/+25"Is your PC Vista ready?"
Is the world Vista ready?
Is Vista ready for the world?
All three are probably no ;) - Kosterfield, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14It's already been done. In Vista itself, the rating system rates you on the following:
HD Space
Gaming Graphics
Graphics
RAM
Processor Speed
Then it weighs those accordingly and gives one concise number for the average moron. - Cheirdal, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I don't understand why Microsoft is making such a huge deal with the graphics. The main end user of their OS's are businesses. I don't see thousands of businesses worldwide suddenly investing millions more in hardware to support an OS if all they use it for is e-mail, Word, spreadsheets, etc.
- holmes101, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Not only wrong, but very wrong. First of all, I've personally tested vista, and it sucks (slow, takes ram, eats hdd, etc). I'm going to stick with xp.
Second, apple did NOT invent the user interface. That would be xerox at the palo alto research center. We can also thank them for the mouse. :)
Oops, they beat me. - ultrasoul, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10An example- The fist build of the software reveals the Intel GMA 900 cards were compatible for Aero Glass. The next build says that they aren't. Reason? No WDDM drivers, but the card meets the other specs. Intel better release those drivers for the GMA 900 ..
- lonnieh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Drop down menus?!? GENIUS!
- tfinniga, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9IIRC, you can run Vista without all the fancy graphical bells and whistles.
I think the main reason why they're focusing on the home is because they already own the office. Nobody is contesting that, really. Now they're trying to take on the living room more effectively, where they actually have some competition in the form of Apple and console makers. - Kosterfield, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Every version except for the lowest will be avaible in x64. After Vista there will no longer be any 32 bit versions.
- Columcille, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8You are forgetting the impact that the "Oooh, shiny!" effect has on your average corporate decision maker.
- Trention, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I appreciate what Microsft is trying to do, but wouldn't it be easier to give users 5 scores than to pack it into one? Maybe they could reduce the scores to CPU power, graphics subsystem, and hard drive performance. Three numbers would be easy.
- GinsuGuy585, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10No, when Vista comes out you are gonna do what everyone does:
1. Rush to get Vista
2. Install Vista
3. Realize Vista is better and get on with life. - trollenlord, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6The same people that are in decisive positions and can affect the decision makers in business world often have computers at home. They will see beautiful things there and in the magazines etc and will create requests for that stuff in the other environments as well.
Besides, some do care. Not many, but they do. - kimos, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Agreed. Their money is in the business world, not the home PC. Most places where I've worked that have Windows XP workstations turn off the default look and feel in exchange for the old Windows 2000/98 look and feel.
This whole OS smells of misguided effort, undelivered features, unreasonable expectations, and an unending stream of mistakes. And of course, lets not forget a hefty infection of DRM... - DigeratiPrime, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7OEM's will start building computers optimized to score high on this and review sites will include it in their benchmarks.
Truth is older computers will run better on xp than faster computers on Vista, so it will be misleading.
my quick two cents. - jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9@Ireland
Will Vista ever be ready? - krazedkaoz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I will wait awhile like I did when XP came out. I will most likely get it 6 months from release unlike XP where I waited a year because I'm more of a PC gamer than I use to be.
- codyman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4All I gotta say is that if Ubuntu keeps up the good work, I say ***** vista.
Right now YES I use XP but Ubuntu is definitely catching my attention... - Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3well, building a computer to vista spec is cheaper than any past(microsft) OS. so suck on that fanboys. They really aren't that high, and windows vista isn't just a "graphically improved" XP.
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@jer.
We're resorting to asking entire nations now? - moylan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@Kosterfield
you're forgetting the people who will feel no urge/need/panic to upgrade. win2000 and xp will be around for a long time. i just did a new install of win98se for a friend. they didn't want 2000/xp. now that was pretty niche but 2000 and xp will have significant presence for the next 3-4 years. - JohnnySoftware, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why did they write this program?
Is Vista for sale yet? No
Do I need to buy Vista for my system to use it? Yes
Therefore, is my system ready to run Vista? No
The only program one needs is logic. It is called a "syllogism". Sigh... - SniperSlap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's a hint.
Don't buy vista.
Businesses still use Windows 2000. Why? Who the hell wants to drop that kind of stupid cash on a performance hit? - Indrek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Damnit, this isn't a Linux article, it's a Windows Vista article. Don't you people get enough attention already?
- Indrek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Like strategy games? Where's Age of Wonders for the Xbox? Or Civilization for the Wii? Why, oh why can't I play Cossacks or Stronghold on the DS?
Yeah, consoles. That's the ticket... - jamey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4How to save yourself a lot of money: don't buy Windows Vista. Use Ubuntu instead.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@pabster "Vista sucks, and so does their lame-ass "rating" tool."
Have you even used it?
I'm running beta 2 and its actually pretty good, except for that annoying UAC crap. Does take a bit to get used to though.
The Vista Ready tool DOES suck however. How I'm not getting a perfect 5/5 with dual 7800s, 2Gb RAM, almost 600Gb free HDD out of almost double that, and a 4600+ X2 athlon is quite beyond me. - Dominatus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think a lot of people need to realize that the majority of the harddrive and RAM needed is for indexing of the harddrive's contents, not just the pretty graphics, which can be turned off. That's why the OS is more RAM hungry than XP.
- nightsweat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@zybch - The ratings go higher than 5. I'm getting a 5.2 with an E6600 core 2 duo, 2 Gb, near empty 750Gb hd and an 8800 GTS. My un-overclocked CPU is marked as the limiting factor.
- Indrek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Get an MSDN subscription.
- spamzor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1How can I get my hands on windows Vista beta?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1*giggle*
With Linux, it doesn't matter what speed your system is, you can choose from hundreds of FREE distros for one that suits your need and system specs: http://www.distrowatch.com/ - JAGUART, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Businesses still use Windows 2000. Why? Who the hell wants to drop that kind of stupid cash on a performance hit?"
Exactly. - hunchback, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I was just kidding fanboys note the stupid smiley at the end of my post ... get a life fanboys, like MS is sooo vulnerable ooooh ...
- odarky, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I say get rid of this feature and concentrate on other issues.
- njgeek12, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I like the fact that it recommended me getting a 360, just so i can view my pics on TV.
- robbh66, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Not sure what all the hooplah is about. My computer passed and i built it over 3 years ago...
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3I believe Ubuntu is better than Windows by far, but the problem is change. People don't like change. If a company has been using Quickbooks or Microsoft Office for 10+ years, they are not going to switch to Linux.
- NejiKun, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3No, people are going to do the following:
1. Rush to get Vista
2. Find out that their computer cannot support Vista
3. Buy a new computer with Vista already installed on it.
4. Realize that they just wasted upwards of $500. - superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Apple has it harder than Microsoft. Microsoft has to deal with somewhat more in the way of hardware configurations, but not that many more considering that Microsoft simply provides an API that hardware and software designers code to - Microsoft doesn't have to worry about a new BIOS working with Windows, the bios maker does.
In constrast Apple has to design a bios itself that works well with the rest of the system. They have to design the motherboard and OS to work with all of the same PCI cards that you use in Windows today.
Windows supports more systems but there are a lot more people than just Microsoft doing the work (what do you think the betas are for? They are there for device makers to update drivers). Apple has to worry a lot more about people writing drivers for the OS.
That Microsoft has it harder is a myth that will persist for some time because lots of people don't understand exactly what Microsoft does. - pabster, on 10/12/2007, -13/+7@tfinniga
Yeah, you can try to disable all the visuals. Unfortunately, Vista will still be using about 350MB+ more RAM than XP would under similar conditions.
Vista sucks, and so does their lame-ass "rating" tool. - superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11) Buy a Mac, use Windows XP in virtualization mode for support of legacy apps.
2) Buy a 360 to play all of the WIndows games you would have played otherwise. - hunchback, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2Forget about upgrading parts of your current computer, in 2-3 years, just buy a whole new one, Vista would probably hit SP1 by then and you'd be using some AMD quad core chip ... Worldwide, Ubuntu would be on 20% of desktop PCs, Macs would be at 6% ... :-)
- pabster, on 10/12/2007, -14/+5@robbh66
You're making excuses for Micro$oft. "Oh but oh noes, they have to support lots of hardware!"
Big ***** deal. That's no excuse for the bloated, ugly, terrible excuse for an OS that Vista has become. - drandallmc, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2i decided a couple of months ago to get a new computer when vista came out (then the release date was november)
i got fed up with waiting and just got a dimension E310 from Dell, with a free 15 inch monitor.
Vista gonna be a piece of crap when it comes out, and ill be happy with my xp. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -16/+6in soviet russia people dont make moronic comments
- soopafly, on 10/12/2007, -15/+4Micro$oft stealing ideas?!?! No way...........
