- ArcusOfSV, on 10/12/2007, -9/+52You got dugg down because:
"Topic marked as lame, info reported to Microsoft."
Dont be such a pussy.
Bill! They are talking about you on Digg!!! Bill!!
Grow up... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29I just installed Vista RC1 without a Key. Once it is installed you have 15 days to activate Vista. I clicked on the activate icon in control panel and selected the option to call and activate .....after 5 minutes I was able to speak to a person and was given an activation code after I read off some numbers.

If you read the summary:
it [Microsoft] has temporarily run out of serial numbers for testers to use to install the beta.
And the article:
"We will have more keys available for download within 72 hours. "
Temporarily. A glitch. It's not a problem with the key algorithim. - tryferos, on 10/12/2007, -3/+31And just in case there are any Steve Ballmer fans...my buddy works for Microsoft and hes met Mr. Ballmer. First thing I asked was "is he really just a stupid dancing monkey?" His response was "Yes the guy is extremely strange and what the world thinks of him is true"

- spartan777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17here's the link
http://download.windowsvista.com/preview/rc1/en/download.htm
they use akamai, so the speeds are good, i averaged about 200 KB/s on the college line. - titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Where do you download RC1?
- SundayTrain, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Sure as hell wasn't a Penguin...
- NeoCortex, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Steve Balmer a monkey? More like a charging gorilla.
- imStanny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12From my understanding, all Betas (with the activiation keys) will expire in June 2007.
- gavroche, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I dont see where you made the millions
- Darkkish, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12why the hell did you install a beta operating system as your only operating system?
- Linkage155, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Select the "call in" feature, wait a few mins, talk to a guy and he'll give you a key.
- polyfrolic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Interesting fact about gorillas. The males have the smallest sexual organs of all the primates.
- spartan777, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9how exactly did you install without a key? i tried installing when already running xp, and it won't pass the input key stage.
- timmyboywonder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I installed it as well without a key.. when you are installing it will come to the prompt where you are supposed to put in the key. RC1 gives you the option to skip that and do it later after it is installed.
- spartan777, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9there was a digg story with a link to it several pages ago.

- ArcusOfSV, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Yes code monkey. He ran out of tab :/
- tachistoscope, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6HERE COMES THE HORSE PORN
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Thanks for the link spartan.
- jivemasta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The beta is LIMITED, this means they aren't going to make infnite keys. They are going to make as many as they need, my email from them said 100,000 beta downloads. So I would assume they want to expand the availability of the beta and thus, need to make more keys. Now I could be wrong and they really did run out of keys. But I can't imagine how that could happen. It's not like they have some guy in a room writing them out by hand. It's all computerized.
- byronm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Basically microsoft allocated x amount of keys to the beta program on connect and they used them up. They now need to allocate another block and the problem being that they're basically eating up keys from a pool that would probably have been saved for retail or other endeavors..
whats the big story here? I have my 3 connect keys and they allow installs on 4-5 machines and like others have said they took away the stringent requirements on the later RC's so you can use the same key until your mind goes numb - CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11You don't need CD keys when you only have 4 customers.
- Kanna, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5developers developers developers developers developers developers developers developers developers developers
- splammo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4how about if i just sign you up for lots of spam.
joking. but you are brave to post your email on digg - CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yeah. Vista is a trainwreck because they ran out of beta cd keys. Does that make much sense to you? Think before you type.
You guys act likes its your god given right to have a vista key. You know what? Im wrong. It's not even about that. You just wanna ramble about how ***** MS is without using your head first. - joemc72, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4And this, ladies and gentlemen, is why there needs to be more chlorine in the gene pool.
- t3hX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3OS X server actually does have a CD key, and so does iWork, same with Final Cut Studio, and probably some of the other pro apps.
- Crossmenjeff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It's just a beta, its not a final release. it could be possible that they wanted a cap on how many people tested this beta version. If they release more its because they feel comfortable (at this point) releasing more. Don't get your pannies in a twist over little things.
- bdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Also, the site isn't hosted by Microsoft/NineMSN at all/.
- imStanny, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Yes - I am aware of this through first hand experience. I was able to install Windows Vista on a computer without the Activation key. 2 days later I got kicked out of Windows; nothing works, and I can't access any of my files. I am very annoyed, especially since many people have several keys AND each key can be used on 10 computers. Someone throw me a freakin' bone here... or a serial key! ;-p
- tarmithius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@spartan
I used Firefox and got speeds upward of 1200KB/s, guess it depends on your connection, not what they used. Plus that Akamai uses ActiveX, and I am not about to fire up the old IE and they give a choice on which to use. - rockintom99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey, don't mock a monkey's coding abilities. They can use their tail to type, increasing productivity!
- Pengo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Microsoft has now put Our Overnight Planning System (OOPS)" No one else noticed this? it just makes so much sense
- WhiskerTheMad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's interesting that MS blows off corporate complaints about compliance and key tracking, and yet they can't even manage them well enoug to *give them away*
btw, in case you think your job sucks... a friend of a friend works as a "compliance officer" at a major hospital. His whole job is keeping track of software keys & CDs... talk about depressing. - stm24, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1RC1 is opened for anyone not just MSDN or TechNet and or an invited beta programmers. I've downloaded Beta 2 and Pre-RC1 and downloaded RC1 and used the same key from beta 2. Before anyone talk about RC1, how about downloading it and use it before you say dumb sh@t about it!
- miken32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@stm24
I click the download link at download.windowsvista.com and I get "Thank you for your interest in Windows Vista. Access to this file is restricted to Customer Preview Program participants only. Please refer to your invitation email for access instructions."
And I downloaded beta2 from MS! - elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I believe that Dave Barry holds prior art for 'this is not a joke'
- VSKBadCRC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I was getting about 450-500KB/sec with the standard browser download.
Except the percentage is negative, it's currently at -9% and counting down, heh. - danwarne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Microsoft is certainly not the owner of the site. APC Magazine is Australia's longest running computer magazine. The advertising on the APCMag.com site is sold by NineMSN which is a joint venture between PBL (the owner of the magazine publisher Australian Consolidated Press that owns APC Magazine) and Microsoft Australia. But that's the limit of Microsoft's involvement... they have zero editorial control over the site.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1(Yes, we made that last bit up.)
- prosperolt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes it was limited to 100,000 downloads, but they also gave each user 2 keys if they requested 2. Not only that but think about all the free Vista CD's that were ordered, I imagine led to this shortage or rather 'outage'.
- twowords, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Just by reading the title I tough, this is a publicity stunt.
This website reports the story as if it is a "leak" from microsoft private website.
The only problem is that microsoft is the owner of the site. - trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1They've change the keys before, they will just reseed it and reissue product keys to people who want them.
