The Live platform is not a "online version of Windows" - bloggerboxer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Windows live link: http://live.com
I saw it here earlier today http://digg.com/links/Windows_Live_Beta_released - theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Totally, 100% misleading title.
- Carbito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"BAHAHAHAhahahaahaha...
i love Microsoft has done for firefox users:"
Actually they will probably have it working in Firefox very soon. I have no doubt that it is the number one priority for the development team. - nato4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1im confused, how can u have an online 'live' os without having an os to boot from...?
- Axim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1its not going to be a real os but just an website that will offer a environment coded to resemble an os with web-apps like office and msn. clearly a response to google's development of web-apps and the whole 'web 2.0' thing
- CaptSnuffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Too little Too late.. Its annoying how everyone has to try and "one-up" the compitition when all they are doing is trying to "catch-up." How bout some companies try to be "innovative" instead of "copying innovation"?"
I'd say this is a pretty innovative undertaking. How many companies have released online office suites? You see web apps all over the place, but not many are designed after actual desktop software (except maybe Meebo). I don't know what's wrong with some of you people, even when MS comes up with something new that hasn't really been tried yet, you bash it. I know it's "the cool thing to do" now, bash microsoft and sing praises of apple and the wonders of open source, but once in a while they could actually get something going. - swaxhog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought they were going to compete against EyeOS.
http://www.eyeos.org/ - tribalsun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I should digg this only out of protest to all the "MS sucks monkey balls, open source rah rah rah, Viva la Google, Firefox is teh roxors hahah lollerskates kool-aid drinking MS bashers" on digg but no, it's just been on the homepage under a different title.
- SmeRndmGy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it is a website. not an online OS. how do you get to the website? you need a computer that already has an OS installed. this is just a website, and it doesnt really do much either.
- mephitix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This isn't an "online version of Windows". Very harshly misinterpreted by the media and news titles like this. Windows Live is more like X-Box Live in the sense that it enhances the productivity of a normal user by providing them with tools that combine instant message functionality, location sensing, news aggregation, etc. with personal organizers.
I could see Office Live as useful; how many times have you needed to access a word document from somewhere away from the original place that you wrote it? Sure, you could use remote desktop or an ftp server, remember to put it on your usb key, or "send an email to yourself", ha. But productivity and efficiency lies in a standard way to retain this type of data, update it, and complement it with some possible innovative featureset. - thewhitefedora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.google.com/ig
Just add google talk to the above page and some other useless crap and you'll have the same thing. Plus, Windows is a disease that has infected my hard disk and I dissapprove of Microsoft run sites.
and plus, some one will find a hole in it and broadcast you SSN# to the world, I mean come on, Microsoft is joke when it comes to security. - Magreger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is going to be scary as hell. Someday in the future, nothing you use will be part of your local system. This would would put your whole systems contents in the providers ( Microsoft's new on-line OS now in it's infancy )hands. In time Internet will be that instantaneous. I couldn't trust Microsoft with it "all". just a thought, but I'd rather keep things here on my end for a while. sorry M$
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0looks like a rip-off of netvibes:
http://www.netvibes.com - Hoohoonick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0From that site:
"Firefox Users
Firefox support is coming soon. Please be patient :-)"
Apart from the fact that that's completely pathetic, why did they do a smiley there? - drseth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who still has a spammail....err...I mean, hotmail account anyway?
- Harlequn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0so like, does this mean it's going to be running on a mainframe?

http://digg.com/links/Next_Up:_Google_Office_as_soon_as_tomorrow_ Google Office as soon as Tomorrow. Ignoring the fact that Google isn't all about more and more money (which no avid Microsoft fan can claim of their own company). Further ignoring the fact that Google coders get so many hours per week to support their favorite OSS on Google's time, and even ignoring the fact that Google works with an open coding scheme so as to provide interoperability and provide alternatives when something is not supported. Google is trying to break into the market, where as M$ is suppose to be the leader of the market. To me this seems like a half arsed attempt to try and keep up with google. Google is by no means perfect, and some things I still don't understand, but if you ever want to see how freely Google distributes it's own work, just go to http://code.google.com and look around. - opticsponge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lol try using with opera.

Yeah, I am getting a bit tired of seeing this sort of thing. When Google releases a half-arsed product ("never mind - its a beta") everyone talks about it. When Apple releases a poor attempt at a portable video player Steve Jobs ends up on the cover of Time magazine. Yet when Microsoft releases what is actually a great platform with a lot of potential (still in very early beta) everyone gives it a "meh" response. No matter what Microsoft does no one gets excited about it any more.
Well if something from Microsoft has been a success things would probably change. For example. Google has made a search engine, email service, web portal, news site, and a desktop search program. All of them has been a success. Apple has an OS that has the best GUI ever, an mp3 player that has the largest space ever, and a really cool website. But Microsoft on the other hand has an OS that takes up the majority of my hard drives, a crappy email service that looks like *****, and a browser that has more cons then I can point out in one post. - mtgarden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If it can't use my gmail account, then I don't want it.
And yes, Microsoft had this before google/ig - toddbloom7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So, uh, since when did a web portal become an online version of an operating system?
Even if the article is correct, and they start to post more content that would interact with the file system, it doesn't make it any more of an operating system.
As for Windows Live, sure, it looks "nice", but what incentive is there for me to switch (and move over all of my settings/bookmarks/feeds) when I can already do the same thing with Google IG? And what else *could* there be that you would be comfortable using in an online environment? I know I sure as heck wouldn't want them (or any company) messing with any of my applications on my local system.. that just seems to be a recipe for disaster, right there. - robche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0god i hate all these bashers, firstly microsoft had www.start.com way before googles ig, and if it had the google search engine, id use start.com over google ig anyday. Next this has huge potential, and microsoft has yet again found a market to dominate so stop the bashing them, this is a really good idea
- MixedSpleens, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks just like google.com/ig except has a crap search function. but interestingly enough it did say firefox support coming soon.
- modifiy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just wonder what will happen in a few years when Google is bigger if the bubble doesn't burst before then. If they get to be the next microsoft will people be bashing it then? Just so sick of hearing all this stuff about google is the greatest ms sucks crap. The crap about inovation and what now is a bunch of bs the fact is everywhere in the world things have been done before and mimiced. Inovation is basically taking someone elses ideas and puting your twist on it. I could care less who does it first, but who does it best to me is what counts.
- gbm85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I already have an online version of Windows. It's called Windows XP Pro with RealVNC...
- Gregd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Carbito said, "No matter what Microsoft does no one gets excited about it any more."
The perception of Microsoft these days is that they're bandwagoners and that they either don't innovate or buy companies that do. Am I excited about what they're doing? Yes and no. I'm excited to test Office 12. I was excited to test IE7 but walked away from testing it, wholly disappointed.
I get the impression from Microsoft sometimes that instead of listening to what I want, they tell me what I want. Make sense? This might be exactly why they're in the boat that they're in. You can read my first impressions of IE7 on my blog, http://www.treelimb.org/ but it boils down to extensibility for me. IE7 just isn't extensible.
That being said, I don't think that all of the Microsoft bashing is warranted. They've made huge strides in their server and desktop os. The systems that I administrate include Windows Server 2003, Exchange 2003 and various other Microsoft products and they all run 24/7 with no show stopping problems.
On a side note, sooner or later, Google and Apple will no longer be the media darlings they are today. There was a time when Apple floundered and didn't know it's ass from a hole in the ground. Google's quick domination is already irritating some people that I know.... - modifiy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Who still has a spammail....err...I mean, hotmail account anyway?"
I do.
I get more spam in my gmail account then my hotmail account and i use my hotmail 10x more then my gmail. I haven't even signed up for anything with my gmail. Not to mention their new beta test of their mail is sweet. - ebenthurston, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dupe.

I have to agree with you here. Whenever I find a comment related to open source bigotry, firefox's "superiority", or linux BS, I just call it flame. Digg is a cool site, but the users, for the most part, are the same bunch of bigots and 12 year olds you'de find at slashdot.
I'm digging this because I'm happy to see this innovation on microsoft's side. I wish people would show some more open-mindedness. - lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"How is this an online OS? Misleading title.. 'Tis a portal.. nothing more."
Naming a portal after an OS is misleading too. - lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I get the impression from Microsoft sometimes that instead of listening to what I want, they tell me what I want."
Actually, it's companies like Apple and Google that are telling us what we want; Microsoft merely tries to jump in whenever it turns out they're right. Of course, no one cares about the me-too guy. - dep01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks like they just rebranded MyMSN.COM and Start.com... How is this an online OS? Misleading title.. 'Tis a portal.. nothing more.
- tehnico, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1In related news, after an insufficient number of "Diggs", Microsoft has decided to not develop an Online Office suite.
- ashtonium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0is it just me... wasn't Bill Gates just a week ago saying that "web-based software will never make it", and now he's all like "um... yeah, this stuff is great, it's way of the future." What a frelling politician.
besides, this looks exactly like Google's customizable homepage. - SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google should team up with Mac to form the Super Voltron Ultra Mega OS X Supreme and slay our MS enemies and their inferior Decepticon Longhorn Craptacular Windows OS.
But, seriously wouldn't it be badass if Google and Mac made a system together? It would kick some serious operating system ass! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Microsoft is sad, this ***** won't fly. They dropped the ball many of times and didnt even see the internet blowing up -- back in 1995!!!

Basically it has a few more "gadgets" (as the site sais) then what Google's page has.
So now hotmail users don't need to feel excluded from the web portals - robche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0god if use actually did some research and read the dam article they are not copying google and putting your documents onto the internet or on their servers, do some reading, grow up and realise that there is life outside apple, and firefox and google. I just wonder what the comments would have been if it was google doing it. Grr making me so angry im going to bed.
P.S australia rules - robche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Microsoft has been a success things would probably change."..... and an operating system that controls 90% of desktop PCs is not classed as an success? I'd like to hear your definition of success... The iPod fashion accessory… sorry media player is a success because they dominate, Google search is a success because it dominates, the windows operating system, like it or not, is a success because it dominates, similarly with the Microsoft office suite.
All use fan-boys are so dam annoying! Get over your faith in your respective company and take a look at the big picture, this has huge potential, think of the possibilities, imagine having simple tiny PCs that only include ram and no hard-disks and in it installed a web-browser or some other client that directly connects to the website and you can use it to check your emails, get directions, make reservations and store some small notes etc. That’s all most people need? In my opinion this is the beginning of a new concept of computing, but hey… its not apple/google/mozilla/open-source so its crap. - mephitix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Google Office as soon as Tomorrow."
Haha, yeah, sure. Dream on kid. As much as Google is at the forefront of innovation, there are two things: (a) the "press conference" between Sun and Google that happened A MONTH AGO was simply to state collaboration between the two companies and to have Sun dance around Google's Toolbar. (b) Google Office and Windows Live are two different things. The supposed Google Office has been assumed to be an Office suite that resides on the web. That's a model that I believe is flawed. A user wouldn't want to connect to a central enterprise website (where tons of other users could connect to) and work on an office document. A better model is a repository for storing the data objects utilized by Office and Windows (such as Word documents and Favorites, respectively). This retains the notion of mobility and allows it to translate to standard web browsers as well as mobile environments, pervasive devices, etc.
So yeah, go ahead and bash Microsoft, but get your facts straight before you do so. - ovidius, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0According to the article, MS "announced on-line versions of its Windows operating system..." I wonder what a BSOD will be like in my browser!
- Christophercles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0You can always tell someone is a wanker by their use of "M$". I think alot of people will switch back from Firefox when IE7 comes in, just because its nearly an exact clone of Firefox. I know I have. Why bother having 2 browers installed?
- outerspaceapple, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I wonder if it will run in IE.. does that make it twice as insecure?
- vertigoblue, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0it would be be nice if someone could hack that and steal CPU cycles...
if it is like a mainfraim, or network of mainframes, think of the damage you could do - thatsiebguy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Too little Too late.. - squeakypants, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0No digg, stop with the misleading titles
And yes, even if it was a true embedded OS, then notice how the KDE one just came out ;) I'd much rather use the KDE one. - ahmerhussain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Wow this is gonna make it 10x easier to take down a big company like MS.
