- TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -23/+90Wait, you're telling me that BETA software is blocking drivers that could potentially affect the stability of the software they are trying to BETA TEST? I am SHOCKED!
- john2kx, on 10/12/2007, -12/+62And you have the choice of whether to use MS's new OS or not..
Although, this news certainly helps my decision. - Lucid, on 10/12/2007, -14/+46Good thing I can also choose not to use "their software"
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -5/+36Roxio says that - "EMC Version 9 is Vista compatible, but Vista is a moving target, so we can’t assure 100% compatibility until after Vista is final and released. We may have to release an update at that time, but we are committed to doing so if necessary."
"However, Vista RC1 users report that Deep Burner (shareware) and ImgBurn (donation-ware) are working."
---
maybe next time quote the part of the story that is important not the part you can start a flame war with... yeah? - _Caboose_, on 10/12/2007, -6/+29Vista is still being developed - when it goes final, they probably won't block it.
- MicroBerto, on 10/12/2007, -15/+33You're right, they can do whatever they want. But then again, nobody's going to buy it if their favorite apps don't work on it.
Architectures don't have to be 100% open (despite what the hardcore Linux geeks say) -- but they need to be "OPEN ENOUGH".
Microsoft has been violating that 'standard' way too much lately. You won't see me putting Vista on anything anytime soon. - TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -14/+31Being a troll is also an effective way to earn yourself a block. Congratulations.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17nothing worked in xp when it first came out either and vista aint even out yet.
But if you dont remember search xp aspi layer - agentjones, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Read the damn article. It says they're blocking it just for RC1. They mention its probably to stop false bug reports from users trying to use virtual drives.
- ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12uh...alcohol actually works with vista.
Personally, I think their software is ***** anyway and they spam you like crazy when you register it. - Schwab, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11This doesn't make any sense. If it has something to do with virtual drives, why is Daemon Tools working very fine and well right now?
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I would say the exact opposite. For one, I love that Vista halts new EXEs and setups and waits for a user prompt before executing. This is the kind of feature that makes people aware of what's going on in their OS and helps them better secure their desktop environment. This degree of security affords people the option to either meticulously allow only intended software to be run or installed, or to just click Allow on everything if they're lazy.
A beta of a new OS doesn't work with every piece of software ever written. Boo hoo. You admit to using 2 OSes yourself which implies that you are not entirely satisfied with either. Why are you snubbing a third, unfinished OS for being guilty of the same? - repruhsent, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I read somewhere that Nero was being worked on for Vista and should be released/patched in compatible form shortly after Vista is released. Alcohol Soft is a bunch of cry babies.
- bignate, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Did anyone RTFA? The title is misleading. All they're saying is that it doesn't necessarily work in Vista BETA, and that it was probably done that way on purpose to help with the beta testing. Alcohol even acknowledges the fact that it will most likely work with the final version of Vista. Reported as inaccurate.
- jasondefaoite, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9imgburn works fine http://www.imgburn.com/
- sayitaintjonas, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I've burnt a couple discs using Nero with Vista RC1 and have had no problems. The only thing is that when you install an upgrade, Windows says that Nero is not yet supported and has to be uninstalled before the upgrade can continue.
- TheDrunkMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7From the article:
"They have actually placed a hard block on the device drivers for the time being, to stop the virtual drives from loading. It is more than likely in place to help them beta test Vista without having reports from beta users regarding virtual drives, which might complicate things. We are working with them at the moment to ensure there are no incompatibility problems in the future."
This article seems to be misleading, implying that this isn't normal or that Alcohol Soft is worried. Looking at the first few comments, this just seems like an excuse to bash Microsoft. - yaosio, on 10/12/2007, -7/+13Because Alcohol is a bunch of whiners that are too lazy to modify their software to work correctly on Vista. This probably has to do with the new driver model. Just think what would happen if Windows stopped existing, we would have thousands of software companies complaining their software worked on Windows but not Linux and "the makers" of Linux need to fix it.
- Zoplax, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Yeah. Apple.
- Mohonri, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8First of all, this has nothing to do with DRM. The block is in place to keep people from reporting bugs when using virtual drives.
Second of all, very few people will switch to Vista in the first place. A vast majority of those who will use Vista will get it pre-installed on their computer. And a vast majority of those currently running Win98, 2K, or XP won't bother upgrading - DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Several virtual CD mounting programs work fine in Vista including Alcohol. Maybe they're using the 64-bit version of Vista that requires signed drivers?
- STKD, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Let us know how the lack of games or apps or, you know, anything at all goes for you.
- fintler, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11Um, it's not the final release. The whole point of a beta is to have crap not working and let people try out the stuff that does. If you need an OS where stuff needs to work, use a released OS and stop bitching about a prerelease one.
- stasis88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Oh and by the way this story has NOTHING to do with DRM, didnt you even read it?
- Ahnteis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5No directX 10 for starters. You'll also miss the new, improved security model.
- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9@ neoform
RTA and you'll see it does work. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3TheCount, you are a hypocrite.
- Ryosen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@MicroBerto
"But then again, nobody's going to buy it if their favorite apps don't work on it."
No one needs to buy Vista. It'll be shoveled down our throats with every new PC purchased, like it or not. - estvir, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8.. because you base your computer choice on flamebait and inaccurate titles ? Real smart there buddy.
- mittman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I am realy getting sick of seeing these 'Reported by Diggers as Possibly Inaccurate' statements on a lot of good stories. If you don't know what your talking about, don't leave feedback. People posting here are confirming that what the article is saying is true.
- terrya64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2by before , I mean in the previous beta's.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2'Reported by Diggers as Possibly Inaccurate'
They should just change that to:
'Reported by Whiney Trolls as Possibly Inaccurate'
It seems to happen only with MS and Bush stories 95% of the time. - DigitalDud, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5How is this anti-trust? They don't make ISO mounting software.
- terrya64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My burning software and antivirus all stopped working in rc1, they worked fine before.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think Microsoft is deliberately blocking my computer from working properly. Ever since I installed Windows... well, you know by now I I think.
Microsoft isn't blocking these CD burning apps on purpose though. They install low-level drivers that have been used by malware in the past.
Now, if MS "mysteriously" allowed some other types of software to install such drivers -- such as Starforce -- then I'd start to get suspicious! - Phyltre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree that planned obsolesence is a problem, but computers really are moving ahead very, very quickly. There is somewhat of a balance between these two forces in the industry.
- mrinternet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Sorry mate inaccurate.
All Tuesday was Roxio's Vista Ready Creator 9's release.
Got it works fine, also version 8 did as well and 8.5 updated the driver that worked with Vista RC1 (before RC1 was even realeased).
http://news.com.com/2110-1025_3-6112269.html - eTron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Going from Pre-RC1 to RC1 it told me I needed to uninstall nero 7 before it would work. So I tried to uninstall it and it gave me errors. Had to use neros manual uninstall.
- Rosewood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How did you get daemon tools to work in vista? Vista RC1 blocks the isntaller for me.
- Wang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1People are probably marking it as inaccurate due to the fact that it's fairly obvious that it isn't true. Everytime something fails to work - it's easy to say "they did it deliberately". In reality, did they really do it deliberately? Sure, after all - they love to encourage law suits!
Nero on the other hand, are simply updating their software for Vista. What's the big deal? - magic6435, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Nero works fine for me on two different computers running rc1
- stasis88, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Why do so many people bash ***** like this when its a beta? I would have thought burning software would have issues on a beta OS, wait for it to be released before you talk *****.
- ceralor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Neither me nor my roommate have had any software burning issues. Then again, we're using DeepBurner. And have two DL DVD-RW drives.
- eTron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not a die hard mac fan, but I will say it was nice when the only thing that worked was itunes 7. Wonder if an older version of Nero would work since some of you say it works fine? hmm...
- eTron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'll have to try that. This is annoying as all hell. That and my haupauge tv card isnt even detected and that's all I can complain about with Vista.
- fjc8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The Alcohol 120% people are simply lying. I have used other CD emulation and burning software without issues.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"Wait, you're telling me that BETA software"
It's not beta anymore. You need to brush up on your Microsoft talking points. - SirNuke, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5If you read the article, the specified reason is to avoid bug reports involving virtual drives, and the block will be removed for the final release of Vista. Though if the block isn't removed for the release version of Vista, Microsoft is going to have a huge anti-trust lawsuit on their hands.
- mississippiman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah i'm sure vista will have the ability to burn a dvd, however I somehow doubt it will be able to write any kind of encryption to that dvd, or make images of it.
Honestly though, i'm sure it will work out eventually - raitchison, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2When used to describe something annoying or lame usually you spell it "ghey" not "gay", though many people get just as offended with either spelling so you are risking a flame by using the term at all.
