- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -11/+67I thought piratebay already announced downloads of vista a few months ago.
- bmartin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+36This is cool. I may be a Linux advocate, but the important thing here is that Windows is going to be more affordable for end users. They really needed to do something like this; w/ all the bad press they've been getting lately, they need to stop making it look like they're trying to screw end users over.
- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13they've always done the "home and student" edition for office, it's awesome. I don't know what the difference is between it and the normal version but it works fine.
- mombof, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14I still can't get over how much they want for Vista. It's crazy expensive.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15Why do people feel the need to dictate their action? Just bury it, you don't need to announce it to the world. We don't really care.
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13Just because someone is supposed to say it:
Single user OSX liscense $129.
Five Mac Family Pack $199, a discount of $319.
That is the full version, none of this neutered version crap just FYI.
Now, the unexpected part. I'm actually quite happy to see this. Many other companies have allowed you to download their software, rather than getting the disk, for a long time. It is good to see Microsoft going down the same route since it adds a lot of convenience and means you don't have to wait or pay a store markup.
Also, it is good that they are offereing a family discount since their marketshare is so large. They should understand that there are many multi-pc families out there and they can do better by catering to that rather than fleecing multiple sheep in one stop at the barn.
for a long time
Finally a good move. - DeFex, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14Someone is supposed to say how OSX is much cheaper you can get 5 for $250 or so.
someone else has to point out that you have to pay for upgrades more frequently with OSx thats why its cheaper.
then lots of other mac vs pc bickering. - quickjack, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11MS fanboy or not, more choice is a great thing.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -10/+16 I don't remember XP costing $400.
And my complaint wasn't only the price. It's that I don't want to upgrade to Vista AT ALL. We are being extorted by MS with DX10. Sure that's legal, but you know what, Jeff, we don't have to like it!
And maybe if enough people didn't put up with this *****, it wouldn't happen again.
I still laugh every time I see that MS Office logo in your avatar. - ScottDaMan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8-1 for M$ reference. That's so 90s.
- Barlo_Mung, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"The rest of this is all MBA segmentation, monopoly squeezing *****. If Apple can do one OS (with better included applications, re: iLife), so can Microsoft."
If MS tried to include better apps people would be complaining about bundling again. And as far as I can see the segmentation is a good thing. Why should I need to pay a higher price for your one version when all I want is basic. Or are you saying MS should just charge the basic rate for ultimate?
If you don't want iLife can you get a discount? No, you can not! Apple is just sticking the cost of iLife to all the users if they want it or not. - tony134340, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Yeah, just bury him already. We don't really care.
- Scatropolis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Give me a break. OS X is cheaper because you have to spend $100s more on the hardware. I own XP and am only spending $160 for Home Premium. That's not asking too much for an operating system I'm going to use everyday for who knows how many years.
Stop using every Microsoft story to vent on how much you hate Microsoft. - Scatropolis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah, so all the developers are just doing it for free.
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 08/11/2008, -0/+4There should only be one version of Vista (Ultimate), it should be half the price it is for a full version. The rest of this is all MBA segmentation, monopoly squeezing *****. If Apple can do one OS (with better included applications, re: iLife), so can Microsoft.
- meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"be greatful that they don't make you pay for service packs, like a certain other operating system vendor."
Since when do Apple charge for service packs? 10.4.x is a service pack, which is free, 10.5 is a new OS. Sure, it might look the same as the others but you get a lot of new stuff and improvements.
I guess i just prefer Apple's way of releasing cheap updates every few years than paying a huge chunk for an update every five years. I mean, hell, that's like being stuck with 10.1 for five years, i seriously don't know how you MS people do it. - LilRabbitFooFoo, on 08/11/2008, -0/+4It's a start. But it's still WAY too expensive and WAY too segmented. Some people have 5+ PCs (between Mom, Dad, kids, media center PC, etc.) and this pricing rivals the cost of the entire friggin computer in some cases. Regardless, this DOESN'T include the new graphics card, ram, etc. you might need to upgrade an existing machine.
And while I am NOT an Apple fanboy, if I'm buying a new machine (which is what this Vista crapola pushes us to do), I'm going to seriously price a Apple against it. They have better built in applications and don't treat their paying customers like sheople or criminals. - inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7> Why do people feel the need to dictate their action?
My theory is that some folks on Digg don't realize that most of us don't sit in front of the computer refreshing Digg every 5 minutes and therefore have no idea that this was a dupe (and, even more importantly, don't give a ***** either way.) - 35263526, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I can't get over the massive difference in the price difference between OEM and retail copies of Vista, and OEM and retail copies of XP. Frankly, it makes it plain just how much MS is ripping people off.
- youareretarded, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4And the average user also wont be going out and doing an upgrade so your point is invalid.
- kingkilr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think they mean that the total MSRP on two of them would be 400, and that both extra come for 50, could be wrong though.
- scarper86, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Home and Student 2007 replaces Outlook with OneNote. You also get Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- aliguana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3doesn't matter to me, I need to buy a new PC to run Vista anyhow (according to their upgrade advisor). And if I have to go out and buy a new computer, I'll have one of them Macs that people are always banging on about, thank you.
- xdigitalkill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@JeffH
Do you believe XP is just a service pack over 2000? After all, the version number was only increased by .1 yet it still was viewed as more than just a service pack. Same applies to OS X. Apple probably don't want to go to OS XI till they have to break the main APIs.
iLife doesn't come with OS X, it has to be purchased separately. However iLife is included on new computers. - uownedge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2OBKenobi is right. The whole thing is stupid. But hey, it's Microsoft's product, and they can do whatever they want with it.
If you're a huge Windows advocate, and you think that Vista is just the bee's knees, that's fine. You go buy it. But don't come here and rag on people who don't want it, all sugar coating the reality of the situation.
The same goes for the Anti-Windows crowd. Don't like Windows? Great! I'm glad to see some support going to one of the other options -- lord knows Microsoft needs more competition. But cut the flame-war crap and say something worth reading. - danl_4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Not just any download, they figured out that Vista is so close to XP that the whole upgrade can be done through Windows Update.
- ArthurSucks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's just ***** up. Bill may be in charge, but it's the programers/artists/maintainers (ie developers) who suffer from software piracy.
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"They ... don't treat their paying customers like ... criminals."
You know what? That is something I never thought about before but is true, maybe more so now with VIsta, but still true. They have been progressively lumping all computer users in withthe group that needs their hand help through any simple process which has caused highly overcomplicated programs and now, as if that isn't bad enough they act like they are certain that we're all key cracking pirates.
Still, as fiver pointed out, the pricing represents a huge policy shift. Perhaps we'll see it extend to more asects of the company and we'll start seeing a company worthy of our business again. - noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Now you get a copy for your PC, a copy for your Mac and a copy to make into a penguin shaped case decoration for Linux.
- noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wouldn't using a one button mouse as effectively as a regular mouse take more intelligence?
- radiofrequency, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Ars Technica should just draw their paycheck from Microsoft. Marked as SPAM for being ars technica junk AND advertising for Microsoft.
- aliguana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2and your need to comment on what was an obviously tongue-in-cheek comment says a lot about yours...
- h0zae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Compusa has plastered their store with Vista and Office XP - Camera/IPOD Section, Front Door, across the Apple Section -- We are going to see alot of people buying into Vista - http://www.compusa.com/products/products.asp?cmid=topnav&N=200704+502482&Ne=500955&Ns=ship%5Fdate%5Fsort%7C0&Cn=Software_Operating_Systems
- uownedge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not going to say anything one way or another in regards to "downloading" Vista, but asking about piracy on sites like this doesn't usually go over too well.
Regardless, your best guide is Microsoft's system requirements. What Microsoft says you need, is the bare minimum that will allow the system to run a blazing mediocre speeds (What I'm saying is, if your systems aren't a step or two above their requirements, it probably won't run as fast as you'd like). - Bobalobabingbon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1read it again...
Until June 30 2007, customers who purchase Windows Vista "Ultimate" (upgrade or full version) can purchase up to two additional Vista Home Premium licenses for $49.99, a discount of $350 from the MSRP of $399.99.
king got it - Scatropolis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What? So anything you can steal you aren't going to pay for? What ARE you going to pay for then? Food? Clothes?
- pastaq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1hmmm, buy vista, sell the 2 additional keys for 2/3 the price and make even. Free "upgrade"!
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
Microsoft makes Vista downloadable?
Lots of stuff is downloadable now, where have you been? It doesn't matter if it's on a CD or not, you need a valid key to be able to use any MS services with it. - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Why the + $10? I guess changing your key in MS's database takes so much administrative work.
- RickyBennett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i dont thank downloading the beta versions is piracy
my systems are over the requirements but that thing cant find any info for my sound card - uownedge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@lysdexia
And to add to what the other two have said here..Apple has been selling systems stock with multi-button mice for quite some time. Why? Because everyone bitched about the one button mouse. "Can't you make it more complex and confusing for the average user? You know, like Windows?" Enough people bitched about it, and so now we have multi-button mice. That's fine by me, and good for all you whiney types.
Anyway, I just wanted to say congratulations to you. You've managed to achieve what hundreds of other Digg users have also managed to achieve. You're an idiot. - Scatropolis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Like what? I've been looking at the differences and all I can see is some extra security features which I really don't care about.
Oh but that moving wallpaper. I'd upgrade that you alone. (not really) - LilRabbitFooFoo, on 08/11/2008, -0/+1You can be assured those licenses are non-transferrable, chief.
- fiver22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Microsoft also announced a family license plan for US and Canadian users aimed at giving users reduced licensing costs for multiple machines. Until June 30 2007, customers who purchase Windows Vista Ultimate (upgrade or full version) can purchase up to two additional Vista Home Premium licenses for $49.99, a discount of $350 from the MSRP of $399.99."
This is a BIG change in policy -I work for MS in activations/Volume Licensing/Additional Licensing/Terminal Server/WGA and the most frequent complaint I get is about the cost of additional licenses (which is about the same as a retail product when it comes to XP/any Office) -The fact that MS is actually making it *somewhat* affordable to get additional licenses in the home is a big change -and a welcome one. Having said that: you couldn't PAY me to install Vista -I'm sticking with Ubuntu and the occasional boot into XP (though I'd be comfy with the occasional boot into 2000). - de46le, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1www.microsoft.com/techguarantee - *free* upgrade :P
and i would assume that those extra licenses use the digital locker and whatnot. - RickyBennett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i meant to say i wold like to see a free trial of vista so i can see how it runs on my desktop and laptop plus to see if i like it or not and i tryd to install the beta of it but the install disk was junk and i cant make a new one
any one know whar i can stell download the beta at ?? - atbnet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In-place upgrade
You can upgrade in-place, which means you can install Windows Vista and retain your applications, files, and settings as they were in your previous edition of Windows.
Clean install
Upgrading to Windows Vista with a clean install means that you should use Windows Easy Transfer to automatically copy all your files and settings to an extra hard drive or other storage device, and then install Windows Vista. After the installation is complete, Windows Easy Transfer will reload your files and settings on your upgraded PC. You will then need to reinstall your applications.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/upgradeinfo.mspx - intense321, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They aren't going to give you two additional keys. What Microsoft does is to "enable" your intial product key to be activated 2 additional times. You still only have one product key. If you sell your key, you've just sold the only key that you have.
- RickyBennett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1u wold like to see a free trial of vista so i can see how it runs on my desktop and laptop
- PuffyC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One reason is Microsoft is responsible for supporting retail versions while technically the reseller is responsible for supporting their OEM copy. Regardless of what many people think, providing support is an expense.
