- inactive, on 02/09/2008, -17/+73Nice, so since Microsoft has repeatedly in the past claimed that 80% of the cost of its ridiculously priced software is to cover piracy, we can expect to see price cuts across the board...right?
- grazwa, on 02/09/2008, -5/+56Microsoft Helps Nab $900M Counterfeit Ring
Fixed - robbh66, on 02/09/2008, -3/+39How utterly irrelevant. Thank you.
- Neem, on 02/09/2008, -2/+26Not that Im calling you a liar, liar, but where did you read this? Thats ridiculous even for Microsoft.
- TotalHalibut, on 02/09/2008, -0/+20Ahh yes because they were clearly modified with space-laser technology to change the original sourcecode and kernel.
Can I have your house now please? If not, the basement will do just fine. - FriedTurkey, on 02/09/2008, -1/+18Citation needed.
- Phocion55, on 02/09/2008, -3/+20Would be interesting to see what percentage of these illegal OS copies were caught and flagged by WGA. I'll be optimistic and guess 2%.
- Treason, on 02/09/2008, -1/+18Peer pressure
- jrbrewin, on 02/09/2008, -2/+18the problem is you're mistaking kids like you, who link to the pirate bay, with professional criminals, that invest heavily in to producing knock-offs that fool would-be legitmate customers in to buying counterfeits. Whilst the fact that you're currently dugg up reflects the global mind-set that it's okay to rip off IP, i think you'll agree that professional criminality is a totally different thing, and shouldn't go unpunished.
- inactive, on 02/09/2008, -4/+19get to it, noob
- inactive, on 02/09/2008, -7/+21because the alternatives suck? Yes, they do suck.
- capiCrimm, on 02/09/2008, -10/+23I can't understand why anyone would need to steal proprietary software anymore.
- drachemorder, on 02/09/2008, -0/+12I really hate what Microsoft does as far as activation and registration and WGA and all that nonsense. That's primarily because I'm a computer hobbyist, I build lots of different machines at different times, I run virtual machines, I do a lot of really customized work, I move parts around a lot, all sorts of things. If I wanted to do everything exactly by Microsoft's book, I'd probably have to buy at least ten copies of Windows. There's no way on this earth I'm going to do that. I would be willing to buy one copy. That's it. And I am not willing to let it phone home to Microsoft to "validate" itself.
With that said, I'm all for Microsoft eliminating these counterfeiting rings. I'm against Microsoft's methods because I want to be able to use the software however I like once I've bought it, but I'm definitely not in favor of counterfeiting to make a profit, and indeed if we could get rid of these professional counterfeiters then maybe Microsoft wouldn't feel a need to rape its legitimate customers to stop the pirates. - GinsuGuy585, on 02/09/2008, -0/+12And the big surprise...
IT WAS CHINA!!!
But seriously, is there anything the Chinese won't counterfeit? - bphicke, on 02/09/2008, -1/+13You can move from your mom's basement to his basement. Thats a step in the right direction!
- inactive, on 02/09/2008, -4/+15Yes I got bored having to use the terminal when I don't want too.
- oojamaflip2006, on 02/09/2008, -2/+13Counterfeit rings of death.
- Llanowar, on 02/09/2008, -3/+13Why would that be? It is still the same software, it still gets the same updates. Because it's illegitimate doesn't mean it's magically better. Just less costly.
Another thing, software piracy is such *****, they hardly have any loss on that. Regular people won't buy expensive software anyway. They get their profits from the businesses who have to buy their software. - TyroPyro, on 02/09/2008, -1/+11Making money from selling counterfeit copies on the street is a lot different than downloading something you were never going to buy anyway.
I agree with Microsoft going after counterfeit rings like this, even though they can basically make up the $900M figure - inactive, on 02/09/2008, -1/+10So they don't get caught you tool (despite the fact that they did).
- shaundee, on 02/09/2008, -5/+14$900m retail in total, so about $2m real value divided up amongst hundreds of people from different countries, creating brand perception, recognition and use in people who could never afford this crap anyway. I don't condone this piracy but what a waste of resources of 80 people.
- Brad324, on 02/09/2008, -0/+9I hear they're even working on a counterfeit Ron Paul, known as "Wong Paul"
- mississippiman, on 02/09/2008, -5/+13What I don't know is, why would they go through the trouble of making the fake cd's.
CD-R's always work fine for me. - andycr512, on 02/09/2008, -0/+7You may or may not make a decent point, but the signature at the end invalidates whatever you said and forces me to bury you.

http://www.annoyingurl.com/ - inactive, on 02/09/2008, -4/+11I see something different between someone just getting an OS from a torrent versus someone who actually wants to make a PROFIT off of it. If you can make 2 Billion USD in profit, you have to do something. I know piracy is bad and all, but I still do it, but I don't go sell it to my friends for a quick buck.
Thats what separates the two. - knobtwiddler, on 02/09/2008, -0/+7so they can sell it on the open market as an OEM product.
besides these counterfeitting operations are not going to sit there and burn thousands of copies. they are going to do a professional mastered run of discs and have it screen printed and all that. its much cheaper in the long run if you're doing thousands of copies. - inactive, on 02/09/2008, -7/+14***** you moron.
- wafflez, on 02/09/2008, -1/+8lol was that meant to serve as a torrent pun?
- Chicken, on 02/09/2008, -1/+8Thanks. More and more of these titles on the digg articles are poorly written
- inactive, on 02/09/2008, -0/+6I think the lesson here is: don't break the law; use free software instead. At least, that's how I read it.
- inactive, on 02/09/2008, -10/+16I can't understand why anyone would need to steal Microsoft's proprietary software anymore.
- Voxxov, on 02/09/2008, -0/+6Apparently not...
- inactive, on 02/09/2008, -1/+6Its both piracy. Just one party is also selling the disks and claiming they are legit.
- novask, on 02/09/2008, -2/+7Articles more about counterfeits and people using them to make a profit then it is about software piracy. At least not the type of software piracy that I'm familiar with (such as pirating software and using that software to make a profit).
- saisumimen, on 02/10/2008, -0/+5Because we don't want to spend endless hours configuring the OS, memorizing commands, looking for drivers, etc, etc, etc.
Some of us have jobs and/or a life. - getoffmybridge, on 05/05/2009, -0/+5Lon Paul?
- sporg, on 02/09/2008, -3/+7The people making the counterfeits are the same people make the "real" thing. What happens is that Microsoft contracts with a company to manufacture the discs. Then when the company or the workers demand more money or better wages they move the contract to another factory thats offering services cheaper. The first factory continues to make the product but now they are considered counterfeit. Happens all the time in China, Taiwan , etc. Usually they know that its happening the hard part is getting the authorities there to do something about it. I really dont feel sorry for any company that has its products manufactured over there getting ripped off. Its karma bitch!
- lazyfisherman, on 02/09/2008, -3/+7REAL pirates repackage and sell software for profit. Go git 'em Ballmer!
- inspecality, on 02/09/2008, -0/+4Go pirate a grammar book.
- spc4, on 02/09/2008, -0/+4Any one remember the guy who was selling Open Office on E-Bey?
- Drewboy64, on 02/09/2008, -2/+6Yeah WGA doesn't catch anything. You would be amazed how easy it is to get passed WGA. It might be an annoying program but it's easy to get around it.
- inactive, on 02/09/2008, -0/+4what IS this internets that you speak of??
- CanadianGuy, on 02/09/2008, -10/+14Now that is piracy!!! The average Joe Blow downloading a copy of Windows from Bittorrent isn't!!!!!!!!
- cliffski, on 02/09/2008, -2/+5you are wasting your life
- Atomic1fire, on 02/09/2008, -0/+3Wong Laul
- ImperialSoren, on 02/09/2008, -1/+4hell, MS extends there piracy war to block the sale of legal retail copies of their software on the used market as well. Try to sell a copy of office 2000 or something on ebay. even with coa and disc pics they'll tell ebay that you are a pirate and they have reason to believe its counterfeit. they know damn well its legit (who pirates office 2000 anyway?) but coward ebay would never stick up for a seller or even give you a chance to speak for yourself. MS would love to be able to extend the copyright war to ALL OS's outside of fresh vista copies.
- inactive, on 02/09/2008, -1/+4The internets is not big enough to hold it.
- inactive, on 02/09/2008, -0/+3I could think of a more disgusting company *cough* AOL *cough*
- inactive, on 02/09/2008, -3/+6I support Microsoft for this. As a pirate, I will download my content. It's one thing to get it for free and another to sell it. Selling it does hurt sales since people bought a fake version instead of the legit usually thinking it was the legit. This is wrong. Microsoft does deserve to make any profits off of the OS that they have spent money and time making. Nobody else has that right. I consider this obvious, but some intelligent people that I have talked to do not.
- VinnieDaMac, on 02/09/2008, -0/+3I wonder if a company announcing their battle against piracy would bring in more good or bad PR.
