- TWiTarmy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4am i the only one that hates that start button?
- uptown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3dumb dumb dumb that the Close Window "X" is no longer at the extreme edge of the screen. I like being able to click it without aiming .... just slam my mouse to the top-right and you hit it. Really seems dumb to offset it from the edge.
- m85476585, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Looks nice, but probably too graphics-intensive with transparency and animations (I assume there are animations). I don't care if my desktop has animations and transparency, but I do care if they slow the computer down even a little. I disabled all the animations in XP, like sliding and fading menus. I don't have a slow computer, but I would rather use its power calculating or rendering video (not that I do any of that very often).
As the minimum system requirements increase software developers will take advantage of all the new hardware people are forced to buy. All that software will slow down their systems and they will have to buy new computers. Then developers will make software to use the new hardware... - urbanight23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Good, I have been running some version of this as an XP skin for a while now. I really like the look of it. It also blends really well with those black monitors that everyone bought. And its shiny!
- lordsandwich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't loathe it like XP's Luna theme. I guess that's a plus.
- dominowrecker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well to all the haters in here..lets be honest. There is nothing Microsoft could have made that would impress you. We get it you are hip and cool cause you use something "different". but stick with what works for you and move on. I for one love just about every OS for something, but hey thats me.
As for me, I think its pretty slick. NOT a huge fan of the start button, but it may grow on me. I am more interesting in the features they added. (cant wait to try the flash ram action for example) - snowsk8er77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i like it but, on a side note, if they don't update apps like paint, games(solitaire, free cell, etc.), and others, it will be the last version of windows i get
- blackjack75, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3With the billions they have they could have come up with something classier, really. It's a common mistake for young designers to try to make everything transparent and shiny even when it's too much. And it is too much, sorry.
As long as it is themeable in the end... - 404notfound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks a lot better than the ugly bright blue, green, and red of the default Windows XP theme. I wouldn't mind using it (until I get tired of it, anyway).
- MioTheGreat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's beautiful. You even get four sliders to change the intensity of the 'glass' effect, color, saturation, and brightness.
It's much nicer when you actually use it, the pictures don't let you truely get a good 'feel' of it.
Oh, and to all the people who say: Oh! Bloat! Eating up CPU and RAM! ! - You do realize that Vista's UI engine now utilizes the graphics card, which offloads a lot of the work from the CPU? - moiety, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm glad they decided to stick with it. Besides the annoying bubbled Start button, I think it's a pretty slick look.
- bobthedino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All I can say is that I'm glad to see C: is still with us after all these decades...
- rolosworld, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3what features will Vista have?
-new theme engine
-new exploits
what more? - etx313, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Looks nice, but probably too graphics-intensive with transparency and animations (I assume there are animations)."
It uses your video hardware to render. If the hardware isn't able to support it then it turns it off. So in reality it uses little cpu time. I'd imagine new versions of DX will flush the video memory of the ui stuff to make video memory available for game, but that's pure speculation on my part. I think it looks great, and I don't understand why people say it looks like osx. The only trait is shares with osx is that it looks GOOD. ;) - estvir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Ever stop to think why? Maybe it's because they had to revamp the whole OS to incorporate the stuff their competitors are offering."
Nope, it's because they restart from scratch, and in under a year brought us beta1 using the new development method and code testing.
"In 5 years, the Windows OS has not changed(not from the kernel)."
So, the kernel has already changed (as i said above).
There is more to vista than the ui, but you ignorant lemmings ignore that and go on bashing microsoft/windows retorting that it is stealing features from osx. - pillfred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i too have a similar theme, not sure how though as this is not my copy of windows( which i do have). ;)
what i want to know is what other features besides a seach function and 64bit will vista have? - bluemech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They'd better keep Windows Classic in there. It's the only GUI I've ever liked for an OS. I like grey and sharp corners. I want to be afraid the windows would stab me, not any bubbly, gradienty, shiny, glassy bullship. Grey with corners.
- Supremedragon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It does look a little bit like OSX.... ah well... im sure theres a way to change that... just like in XP where you can change everything to look like an older version
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1go do some research and stop being ignorant.
- they're new way of coding (having a kernel and adding 'features' as modules, not stringing code together; this allows for much more efficient code, stability and so on)
- new security features; integration of anti- spyware, malware, adware, phishing virus and the new features bitlocker & secure startup.
- new user management and user account usability (and types, such as administrators and normal users); allows for a greater reduced risk in user problems, such as deleting/modifying important files, downloading things they shouldn't be and other common 'normal' user problems.
- new search, and integration [such as desktop search & 'search folders'].
- sidebar & gadgets.
- avalon [and aero] and other ui improvements.
- control panel reworked.
- performance [superfetch].
- ie 7, wmp 11, windows calender, windos mail, all the live programs & other new software.
- new explorer; easier, file stacking, keywords, quick search and tons of little features like that [one of the features labelled 'Document Explorer'].
- taskbar thumbnails and windows switcher/flip.
- windows sideshow.
- networking in general has been improved [within the os].
- new and better backup options.
- new and better power options.
- larger and higher quality icons, also now scalable.
- parental and other controls.
- greater tablet support.
- greater projection and other multmedia support, and new features.
- greater faxing and scanning, and new features.
.. and i could go on about the normal user things, but there is also the huge side of developer/it professional side where i haven't touched.
yes, /some/ of these are already implemented in osx, but many aren't or are better.
want me to start about how they 'stole' the widgets from longhorn [alpha and previous] and other previous apps [not from windpws]. - LittleOni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've never been a big fan of the Luna styled XP and this is pretty, but I'm not really all that impressed. At home I run in Classic mode with as little "pretties" as possible, more or less, because it's really pretty and cool at first, but it grows old after a bit. I prefer the less is more approach myself. My only real concern with Vista (guh...what a name) is the monitor DRM and a lot of promised features taken out as the dev cycle's trudged along. That's my opinion.
- hiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^^^^ Then I'm happy
- orangetiki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hackswithramzi has THE BEST LINK. Check it people
- aliceinreality, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Me confirms that everything Microsoft does is still a cheap knockoff of Apple's product, sources say. Me was unable to reach me for comment.
- orangetiki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I see the overly annoying and overbearing help bubbles are still in place whenever you roll over something. Like a button labled " my documents" would confuse anyone
- hiro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope you can still go back to the smaller version of the Start menu but, other than that, it looks good and I'm looking forward to switching. Still interested to see what Apple have instore for the iBook range to replace the rather battered 12" I use for watching DVDs and browsing the web in bed but I can't imagine moving to the Mac for everything.
'06 looks like an intersting year
- hotwaterham, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I hope you can still go back to the smaller version of the Start menu but,"
You can use the "Classic" start menu just like in XP. You can also use the Windows 2000 (Windows Classic) theme for the entire UI if you'd like. - Jonty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, yeah. I'm glad on Linux you can get lots of effects very easily. On Windows it's fairly fixed. I don't /buy/ OSes for a new look. And it looks like the only thing VIsta is riding on bar Monad, methinks.
- ovidius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It looks pretty. Big deal. We've had 3rd party theme tools that do most of this already in Windows, and we all know KDE/Gnome/OS X Aqua can be pretty too. At work I look at the half dozen or so applications I need to run, not the desktop. The menus don't impress. Responsiveness and performance do. Getting work done is the priority. At home the games I run are full screen... so how often am I looking at the actual OS interface? Sure I like to look at a pretty desktop like anyone else, but if it slows me down even a little I can't stand it. I even turn off some of the GUI "glitz" on my OS X system for the same reason. (E.g., Dashboard lasted about 2 weeks on my system after I upgraded to 10.4)
estvir's list reminds me of when Apple marketed 10.4 (Tiger) and its 100+ new features. Yes, I upgraded the Mac, but not because of that list. I had read about performance gains with the updated Mac OS. Will Vista promise that? Based on the specs I'm reading and comments from beta testers, it doesn't sound promising.
Maybe I'm just a bit jaded by all this. I loved Win2K, and thought XP (especially after SP2) was a very nice upgrade to 2K. But the promise that was Longhorn a few years back is all but gone now. Vista sounds like XP SP3 to me, with the promise of new features down the road... - Pwelborn1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The start button is so much cooler that just having the word "Start"!
- jbus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The 3d accelerated desktop was a must for them to catch up with Apple, so that is good. But, I'm sorry to say but this UI is very ugly and doesn't reflect that Microsoft has put much effort into Vista. I thought this UI was a place holder while the stuff under the hood was in development. Where is the REAL Vista UI Microsoft??? The mere fact that anyone with XP can make their UI look like this reinforces that fact MS is going to release yet another half-baked OS... And that's is just what can be seen at the moment. No telling what else is half-baked. I sure hope they did a better job on the stuff we can't see.
I thought Microsoft could afford to hire better graphic artists, so I guess I was expecting something breathtaking, but I guess MS just don't care about the look of the OS. Ultimately, I doubt most Windows users will care or notice the UI visuals anyway. Windows users don't seem to mind awkward looking and dated UIs as long as they can check email and look at porn. But don't try to push this crap on Mac or even Linux users. Their UIs have advanced beyond this and are advancing as I type this comment. Expect huge advances over Vista from Apple and KDE/Plasma in the coming months.
Some of Vista's worst offenses: The window borders are way too thick, and many elements are WAY too shiny... I know MS wanted to show of transparency, but it should not ever be at the expense of the users productivity. This reminds me of the web pages in the early to mid 90's that were loaded with a combination with 50 animated gifs and blinking text. The webmasters didn't do it for function, they did it because they thought it looked cool. Same here... Microsoft should have stuck with an UNDERSTATED and elegant UI, instead it ended up looking like a cross between Windows XP and Homer Simpson's perfect car. Remember that episode???
As shiny as OSX is, at least it is tasteful and pleasant to look at. I think I'd be sick if I have to look at Vista's UI all day long. - CosyCat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0that´s a ugly looking startbutton hahaha.
- hotwaterham, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Is there really a need for this article to get so high on the list?? Are there not any more important features of Vista to talk about?! Sercurity, funtionality ..."
Sure there are. But most of the pseudo-tech lemmings that hover around digg aren't REALLY interested in that kind of stuff...they want pretty graphics.
Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_vista for some of the interesting features in Vista. Personally, I'm quite fond of the instant desktop search, the incredible update to Windows Media Player and the way it handles/visualizes content, the easy metadata tagging system, and the potential of WPF. - kamizu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0built from scratch, but looks like a pimped up version of a mix between its own predecessor and its closest competitors. full of ugly icons but very customizable and more and more people are using it everyday because it's shoved in the faces of everyone else.
sounds like firefox to me.
sorry, couldn't resist fueling the flame... - narcissus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is there really a need for this article to get so high on the list?? Are there not any more important features of Vista to talk about?! Sercurity, funtionality ...
- PlaidPhantom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So I'm just about the only one who actually likes the look? It's a whole lot better than XP. Although the window borders could be a bit smaller. And I'd probably turn down the window opacity a little. And it'd be nice if they'd shrink the start button. But other than that, it's quite nice. Of course, I'm a straight up Windows user, so obviously I'm a mindless lemming that quite sadly does not know any better. Ask any of these OS X and Linux snobs-I-mean-people.
- japanlover, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0supremecheesm, yes there is and it looks EXACTLY like that
- hotwaterham, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"So I'm just about the only one who actually likes the look?"
No, I absolutely love it. It's even better when you actually get to use it. - replica, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Love it. Will buy Vista on day one.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it's shiny n pure sexiness!
- hotwaterham, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Awesome! I cant wait to not use it because I dont use Windows!"
And there's the problem with most digg users; they think that a story that doesn't appeal directly to them doesn't appeal to anyone and therefore deserves to be modded/flamed. - jimbo92107, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You call this a new operating system? What's the point of shelling out money for this latest MS ripoff of Linux/OSX when you can get the same eye-candy for free?
I'm just waiting for better wifi support from Ubuntu, then I'm jumping off this bogus bandwagon and hitting the Linux trail.
Linux + wifi + Mozilla + OpenOffice = Bye-bye, Microslop! - terrya64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have been running Vista on my laptop since the beta was released a few months ago, Can't use the Aero Glass feature due to the videocard requirements.
- drbroccoli, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My god, I agree. If there is one part I hate the most, it's the start button.
- Mouche, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think it's really smooth. Good lookin... I'm excited.
- oldcyborg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That version is nice, but others by the same people are even nicer. I love the shiny blues and reds, and there are several formats available. It is just nice to look at something different for a change.
Sometimes the icons are not quite what you think they should be, but I converted some, and changed cursors, and am happy with it.
I have the 64 bit on a different version, so I can remember why I can't find certain programs. 64 has not been an easy conquer... I will get it tho'.,...
Cyborg
yes - xamox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0damn't I remember when digg wasn't about the flame wars. Before the slashdot crowd rolled over and turned it into nothing better than a flame forum.
- tmcleroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0looks cool
- Yogurth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I really dont like the AeroGlass design. Too large window borders, useless transparent windows parts, bubbly buttons, Still no integrated progress windows(this is one of worst annoyances in almost every desktop system), no comment on taskbar button(appaling), inconsistency throughout apps menus, too lavish colours..............
......all this said I'm glad it doesn't actually works and feels like OSX, i despise that limited and incosistent interface. - Linuxrocks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's a very pretty UI... But the OS will probably still be unstable and have tons of security holes.
- dSlifer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm in love with the look too, both my desktop and my blog share the aero theme, my only complaint is the start button, I want them to use the XP-ish start button like the one used in KoLs theme of it. Then it would be pretty perfect!

What is Digg?
