- krunk4ever, on 11/22/2007, -2/+76I was expecting Firefox 3 to fix a bunch of memory problems, but wasn't expecting it to even beat IE7. Of course this was a limited test and would love to see more benchmarks. I have to restart my Firefox v2 basically almost every day.
- swordedge, on 11/22/2007, -3/+42and to think this is a beta. It probably contains lots of debug stuff.
- MalDON, on 11/22/2007, -1/+31Too bad they tested it on pages that probably didn't have much javascript. Test out Firefox 3 with gmail, meebo and a bunch of user scripts and it kills Firefox 2. I did a test of my own, and with the above said open Firefox 3 only used 151 megs of ram. That was after a full day of use.

Are you hedging your bets and trying to see if one of them gets to the front page so people can read what you write? I see that you have 12,000+ posts on your profile, that's just terrible. Shouldn't you be outside playing cricket or something like that?
- natmaster, on 11/22/2007, -8/+26about:config > right click > add boolean: config.trim_on_minimize > set to true
Every time you minimize then maximize Firefox, it will be like you restarted it. - TheWindBlows, on 11/22/2007, -1/+19Firefox's main problem isn't much of firefox itself as it is Adobe's flash.
I noticed when I used the release candidate flash plugin it went much faster and works much better.
http://filehippo.com/download_flashplayer_firefox/
If firefox had its very own flash engine it most likely could handle things at a much faster rate.
though admittedly javascript could also be handled better though its not a real biggy.
People who complain about RAM usage should know this.
a program can use 1 MB of system ram and 500MB of Virtual RAM.
firefox doesn't do that by default which is a very good thing as the more virtual RAM you have the worse it is on your hard drive and cpu as it waits for a response.
by default IE uses more virtual memory compared to firefox most likely as IE is slower than firefox other than on flash which has little to do with IE.
Right now Firefox is using 90 MB of RAM but using very little processing power compared to what IE would be using.
Also expect 3b1 to have random bugs its been stated there is a lot of them they still need to get rid of. - demonicume, on 11/22/2007, -3/+20restart your damned browsers. go eat a meal. get sum.
- asadotzler, on 11/22/2007, -0/+17I think we've got to the root of and corrected the problem that some of Firefox 3 Beta 1 testers are seeing.
Starting yesterday, we began receiving reports, like yours, of a new memory/cpu usage issue that happens shortly after a normal startup and can spike the CPU and chew up hundreds of MB of RAM. This is apparently happening to people with new profiles or in profiles that have a very outdated list of bad sites for the Phishing Protection feature and the Malware Protection feature.
What's going on is that soon after Firefox is started, Firefox tries to fetch updates to the site forgery and malware lists -- the lists of bad sites that allows Firefox to warn users about suspected Phishing and Attack sites. If the profile has very outdated or no local lists, as is the case for a new Firefox profile, Firefox is trying to bring down these rather large lists in one big chunk rather than slowly in small chunks. This causes Firefox to consume large amounts of CPU and memory and can slow the users machine to a crawl.
This problem is due to the change in the "SafeBrowsing Protocol" which only affects Firefox 3 Beta 1 and nightly build users. If you're on Firefox 2, this isn't going to affect you.
The work-around for this problem was for us to throttle it on the server side. We've done that and if you were having difficulties, try Firefox 3 Beta 1 again, it should be fine.
- A - vault, on 11/22/2007, -0/+17I installed it earlier today...I like it so far and seems to eat less RAM on OS X at least. One thing that's rough around the edges is Adblock Plus, where if you go to Adblock Frame, it doesn't fill in the filter with what you just right-clicked...you have to enter it yourself which is kind of annoying.
- Murdats, on 11/22/2007, -3/+18does memory cost per unit of time to occupy? if cars ran of free power then why wouldnt you leave it permently running?
- bentrop, on 11/22/2007, -2/+17While 12.000 comments are a more than a little frightening I still don't exactly know why he was dugg down for this particular comment, it was more on topic and had more substance than 95% of the other comments on digg (including this one). Well, I guess after writing 12.000 comments you get rather good a commenting :-)
- Gizza, on 11/22/2007, -13/+24"I have to restart my Firefox v2 basically almost every day."
I might be misinterpreting what you're saying here, but are you saying that if possible you would like to be able to leave your firefox browser open 24/7? Why? Is it really so hard to close it down when you're finished browsing? Perhaps to play a game, maybe the computer gets turned off once a while? How about when you go to bed, must be a real pain to close it and open it again in the morning. - Rileyper, on 11/22/2007, -5/+16Because add ons aren't developed for 3 dumb *****
- Coy0te, on 11/22/2007, -4/+14You wasted your money not once but three times?
- aceallways, on 11/22/2007, -0/+10I would like to see opera numbers.
- Amablue, on 11/22/2007, -0/+9Generally I just close it when I'm done, but there have been times (most of which were caused by Digg) where I've wanted to read about 10 or 20 news stories, or read a ton of threads in a forum when it's just easier to leave it open overnight instead of bookmarking them all and coming back later.
- zzz@tkz, on 11/22/2007, -0/+9I started using it yesterday, page rendering is much faster, and mem usage is a bit lower than Firefox 2.
- x00x, on 11/22/2007, -1/+10You'd think your question would give schesowitz a reason to make another post.
- borninda818, on 11/22/2007, -1/+9He's just very opinionated.
- digudown, on 11/22/2007, -1/+9VM size doesn't indicate memory use. It also include the memory used by shared libraries. Since these are shared libs, attributing it to any application is not correct.
- hondaman, on 11/22/2007, -3/+11I'm up to 366 megs after 2 days of browsing with 3.0b1
- inactive, on 11/22/2007, -1/+8On Linux Firefox runs quite smoothly.
- yobrodude, on 11/22/2007, -0/+6The new habit of putting flash motion movie ads on a site along with all sorts of other flash garbage usually slows my ff to a crawl. Actually, ALL THE TIME, my main complaint.
- dave98, on 11/22/2007, -0/+6for those of you who are experiencing the extreme large amount of cpu/ram usage with 3.0b1 during the first few minutes of use, they've discovered the cause and it has something to do with the SafeBrowsing protocol. They've applied a temp fix to their update server so it shouldn't be an issue soon, if not already.
- HerbSolo, on 11/22/2007, -0/+6well - there's plenty of reasons for keeping firefox open:
I use it with an extension that checks my mail, so it's quite handy to leave it open. Also i have lots of extensions installed, so firing it up takes time. Also i have to type in my master password every time i start it.
To summarize: it's more comfortable. - inactive, on 11/22/2007, -0/+6You're from a video.
- DarkNemesis618, on 11/22/2007, -2/+8I think more tests would probably be in order, but initially, this looks real good. I've been using the beta since yesterday and so far, I'm quite pleased. Memory has not been an issue for me thus far and appears to be better than it was in 2, but then again, I haven't really tested it or had a lot of time to fully use the new version.
- comrade693, on 11/22/2007, -0/+5No debug stuff - it's just like a normal release. Mozilla doesn't ship debug builds.
- andyzies, on 11/22/2007, -8/+13I have a 1.6 Pentium M processor with only 512 ram on my laptop, and I have firefox open for 8-11 hours a day while i work... and it has never crashed on me once. I love it.
I have never understood all the complaints about it hogging resources... it runs like a dream for me.
Just my input. :) - Ryuuzaki, on 11/22/2007, -0/+5I never close mine. Sometimes stays up for many weeks; tho I use it on GNU/Linux, and also have tons (3GB) of RAM.
Firefox 2 seems to settle down in the 200-250mb range. - BRODEL, on 11/22/2007, -1/+6I'm done with Safari. I'm sick of trying it out because everyone saying how good it is and not having a decent way to block ads, or a way to have multiple home pages or a way to simply force new windows to open in a new tab without hitting the command key first. Safari is faster, but I'm sick of having to have a workaround for everything that works the way I want it to in firefox or can be simply added with a simple add-on.
- centran, on 11/22/2007, -3/+7what's the deal?
Um.... it's still in beta? but still, that seems like a big bug for a beta. - sophiaperennis, on 11/22/2007, -0/+4Yes, seeing the same issue using Firefox 3.0 b1 and Adblock Plus 0.7.5.3. This could be an Adblock Plus bug though, not necessarily a 3.0 b1 bug. Furthermore, for some reason the right-side scroll-bar in 3.0 b1 running on my intel iMac 2.8Ghz (OS 10.5.1) doesn't want to work. Time to file a bug-report.
This 3.0 b1 also seems faster in loading my default 10 pages at startup, when compared to the 2.0.0.9 version on the same machine. - HerbSolo, on 11/22/2007, -0/+4Appartently, there's plenty of users, who prefer to leave firefox open. And for those users, memory optimization is an issue. - Now basically you're saying: you're using it wrong. That is an outdated approach, software has to adapt to its user not the other way around.
Also it is as if you said to somebody who's computer has problems with hibernate: Why don't you just shut down your computer? Or if a car mechanic said to someone with a broken air conditioning: "Why don't you just roll down the window" - NGliam, on 11/22/2007, -0/+4never really had a problem with firefox other than it crashing sometimes with Java stuff running. Just updated to 2.0.0.10, don't really see a point in getting 3 as of yet
- Quickstrike, on 11/22/2007, -0/+4If I took a second to comment on every Digg page I visited, I would also have many posts. :(
- daftman, on 11/22/2007, -0/+4Ah kretik, stalking him as usual.
Let's not talk about who's being pathetic here kretik especially when you basically comment on every one of schestowitz's comment.
Check kretik's profile if you don't believe me.
The thing is kretik, he actually has a life. Do a little googling and you find that schestowitz is actually much smarter and more socially active than you are. What have you done beside trolling on digg insulting people here and there thus far? - Verdanic, on 11/22/2007, -0/+4Oh, mine just beach balls every time I load a page and try to scroll before everything's loaded. Or when I right-click at an inopportune moment. Or when I open a new tab. Or when... ***** hell, the thing's beach balling more than it's working.
- mvent2, on 11/22/2007, -0/+4Of course its not ready for prime time. Last I checked it was BETA ONE.
- jozzua, on 11/22/2007, -0/+4Finally, some improvements on how mozilla eats up RAM.
- pingveno, on 11/22/2007, -0/+3And that, my dear man, is what Flashblock is for.
- shelbygt33, on 11/22/2007, -0/+3My firefox (not the beta) always reopens exactly where I left it off, tabs and all.
- HonoredMule, on 11/22/2007, -1/+4It is correct if the libraries aren't actually needed for anything else.
- frostw, on 11/22/2007, -0/+3Just like you
- walter909, on 11/22/2007, -0/+3I'm still wondering when there going to fix the copy and past bug.
- trylleklovn, on 11/22/2007, -0/+3Installed it on Leopard today and finally drop-down select boxes work! Other than that it feels ALOT faster, and it's nicely resizable the same way Safari is, which locks the height to just above the dock.
- vault, on 11/22/2007, -0/+3Interesting, right-side scroll-bar is working for me on 10.5.1.
And yeah, does seem a little faster. - comrade693, on 11/22/2007, -0/+2Known issue - folks are on it:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=40464 ... - zombies187, on 11/22/2007, -1/+3Does this add to memory issues?
- inactive, on 11/22/2007, -0/+2I'm happy with Safari now - Safari block does the same as adblock, inquisitor allows me to add extra search engines and in safari 3 AT LAST it now resizes large images to fit the browser
