my biggest annoyance with digg is retarded ***** like you. - Gregd, on 10/12/2007, -7/+33@nobogeys217
Yes because neither OS X or *nix have any annoyances...
Since your avatar is the Apple logo and you don't qualify your statement about Windows sucking, I'm chalking you up to "fanboy" and moving on... - coldphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -5/+29this is why digg needs to implement a button specifically designed for flagging Fanboy Comments
- thedaemon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27You are confusing 'geek' with 'nerd'. We still use windows for the latest games.
- coldphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12My thoughts exactly, but since when does Digg users care about the legality of the article...me recalls links to whole tv shows available on YouTube
- Coreguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10you can use Foxit Reader :)
not that bloated like adobe - firehydra2k, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Isn't this illegal? Where does it say O'Reilley allows this stuff to be freely distributed online?
- ramsinks.com, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8#1. Dump Adobe Reader for Foxit Reader.
Google "clean and tune".
yep, thats me - first one.
;) - justice7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6what about those of us "geeks" who have jobs in the IT field?
We use Windows. And linux, and unix, and bsd, and sunos and ............... - ChaosIncarnate, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10That's the thing about OS's, they all suck in some way. I never did much working with Macs but I've heard complaints, Linux has it's incompatibility issues and not so user friendly issues and of course it's you don't know what your doing put the keyboard down and go back to Windows problems. And then there's Windows which, while it does work with most everything on the market, it also is ripe with security holes, bugs, bad coding, and countless other problems. It's really all a matter of picking which pro/con combination you can deal with easiest.
- omaryak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's hard to avoid bashing Microsoft. The only thing Microsoft does well, to their credit, is Office. But in the next year if I see anything about maximizing the performance of Vista, I'll recommend downgrading to XP.
- Gregd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Probably when it's got Tech Republic plastered on the front as "presented by" and it's one chapter out of the whole book. It's called "generating interest" in the whole book...
- icexe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5you suck at the computer...
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm afraid the Internet has confused geek and nerd. Many of you obtained your nerdly credentials online, but apparently got it backward at some point. In the olden days, we had to communicate verbally, in person. Information was conveyed in this manner, and getting it wrong meant instant correction and derision. The flatly affected Internet does not provide this corrective mechanism (tardy diatribes like this one don't count for beans). I can also tell you that "kludge" is pronounced /klooj/...there are so many things you newbie nerds just don't know, having been misinformed by Wiktionary or your AIM buddies. I wager that you're mostly actually geeks, which are people with the social graces of a nerd, but without the intellectual bent.
- b403, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5actually, no you don't need to. just install "foxit reader". nearly instant start-up and no overhead. and freeware.
- V2gVzolv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Use this resource instead. http://www.mdgx.com/ maybe all the tricks for speeding up windows that you'll need.
- bdmbdm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2To my experience, the best way to maximize performance is to formay very often. ;)
- gradient, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3this could have been written out in 20 single sentence bullet points
- icexe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm surprised it doesn't mention anything about disabling useless Services.. still, a good article, i found a couple things I never tried before.
- grumpyrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yet another performance guide that suggests reducing the menu popout delay to increase performance. er, no. All that achieves is to make every menu to popout as you pass over them rather than waiting for you to pause. This can be quite intensive if you have the fade or scroll out effects enabled. If 400ms is ** really ** too slow to wait for the popout, then simply click.
- Sp4nk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice job missing the point, morons.
- teknotant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Although these tips are good and informative, I have found that turning off your software firewall, antivirus, automatic updates, and using autoruns to speed up the process of disabling startup processes as well as scheduled tasks, will significantly speeds up my box.
Given if you don’t have a hardware firewall don’t disable your software firewall. - sportman1280, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1agreed :)
- farr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Pretty good guide, I had done most of these already, but anything that makes Windows faster or less annoying is great in my book.
- Gregd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1You bring up a good point. Why O'Reilly uses these creatures on their books is beyond me. Although they do make these books instantly recognizable in the bookstore as O'Reilly books. That being said, the only thing that looks worse than this particular cover is a potato bug...
- Sp4nk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Such irony that one has to use a performance-wasting piece of software to read it. :)
- Jabusau, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0What does searching for */- - - search for?
anyone know? - i440, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5"this is why digg needs to implement a button specifically designed for flagging Fanboy Comments"
It would be redundant. Digg comments are already understood to be a fanboyish nature. No marking is necessary. - Pic0, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1The cover looks like the "breast monster"
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Nothing I have not heard before....
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Here, we are putting Digg Theorem XIV to use.
x != y,
where x represents anything developed or associated with Microsoft, and y represents any postive quality - omaryak, on 10/12/2007, -9/+5Windows XP? Performance? Ha!
- Johnbinarystar, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1None of these "tips" work. I.E. they will not make any significant difference on your frame rate in Doom3. If you cant play Doom3, a)buy a new fancy dan graphics card, and b)upgrade to a 2+ GH processor and the fastest bus speed mother board you can find.
Any thing else is a wast of time. - philo23, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1why the hell is it all in Japanese...
- Halgy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2I hate extremists.
Halgy - spr33, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0How many of these stories does digg need making the front page?
Answer = no more. - lopla, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4"contains a collection of tips, secrets, and solutions you can use to improve Windows XP and work around some of its idiosyncrasies."
I got this book for free the other day. It was a white pamphlet titled "Buy a Mac" inside a magazine. Very good read. Loving life now :) - hyzdufan, on 10/12/2007, -10/+1Whoa *****, I ain't reading all that *****!
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -20/+11Your comment is completely biased. One cannot say that all aspects — *Digg user hypnosis spell takes effect* — I mean YES. Yes indeed. We must reformat all hard drives and install Linux on them! Quickly now!
- Gregd, on 10/12/2007, -17/+2*jedi hand wave*
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -54/+5"Windows XP Annoyances for Geeks"
Since when do 'geeks' use Windows? - nobogeys217, on 10/12/2007, -82/+7my biggest annoyance w/ windows is that it sucks. go to osx or linux thats the best way to fix all of the annoyances of windows.
