- wildleaf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29yes - there is a toolbar for google. I am running it. The custom buttons are not supported on it.
- TheThirdWheel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22Wait wait wait! We're paying attention to the boring part of the article and missing the real news!

Something from Google came out of beta! - stratmancj, on 10/12/2007, -10/+32still no firefox support ... come on google
- s1rk3ls, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Firefox Google toolbar v2 doesn't have all the new features the IE Google toolbar v4 does.
- Defragged, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12You don't have to be doing something dodgy to require the right to privacy.
- wildleaf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Because I love Google. I would give them my first born child if they asked me to. So far none of their services that "track" my habbits have proven detramental. Thus far any google product I have used has only proven to improve my experience not detract from it. So go ahead - keep being a hippie.

Heh, is this the old "if you aren't a terrorist, you have nothing to hide" stance? The problem with a lack of integrity is that it implies a full trust in those interfering with it. Do *you* have a full trust in a corporation's or government's use of your private data and how it's distributed to other institutions? It's usually not as much about being a criminal. - divergentdave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I don't blame Google for no Firefox support. Custom search engines are already built into Firefox. Just go to https://addons.mozilla.org/search-engines.php to add more 'mycroft' search engines. I have Google Maps, Wikipedia, Mathworld, and several others.
On another note, you may want to get the Search Engine Ordering http://maltekraus.de/Firefox/Search-Engine-Ordering/index.pl extension to arrange or delete your search engines. - romulusnr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6What's the point of this anyway? If all you're going to do is make iconic buttons for websites, you don't need a special toolbar. In FF, I just make bookmarks to sites in the Bookmarks Toolbar, and edit them to delete their text descriptions. Then, click the blank icon to access the page, and the site's favicon will replace the default link icon.

You can't do this in IE, unfortunately, but too bad. :) - Defragged, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The comment above mine was posted while I was writing mine.
And yes, I am well aware that there is a version of Google Toolbar for Firefox. I'm using it now. What I was asking was when the Firefox release of the *new* version of the toolbar will be released. The version that the story is specifically about. I suspect that stratmancj was asking the same question. - NomenNescio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I hate toolbars -_-
- Defragged, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Any news on when the Firefox version will be released?
- njbair, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11What the heck are your browsing habits that you don't want people to know about them?
- h00ligan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4what is the point of the toolbar if you are using firefox?
- BigFoot48, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Google says buttons not available for Firefox. Maybe you brainacs that think different can provide a link to the add-on button page for Firefox?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://silassewell.com/blog/2006/jul/22/firefoxbuttons/
Digg didn't like my link for some reason, a sign of flames to come? - Defragged, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm not entirely certain, but I think the buttons also make it possible to use the toolbar's search box to pass information to the site (for example, a search feature for a newspaper, or an 'add new entry' box for an online calendar). Admitadly, this functionality isn't entirely new. Bookmarklets and Firefox's search box have allowed the same functionality for years.
- Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And for sites without a Favicon (or that have a sucky one):
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/325/ - bennyboy371, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Unfortunately you have to bookmark the search engine itself for those bookmark keyword searches. Hell, if anything, for 2.0 they should add support to have it go to a separate page if its clicked independently. I heard there was a javascript bookmarklet to do just that, but it was long and I can't find it again.
- Defragged, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1>>bennyboy371
"Unfortunately you have to bookmark the search engine itself for those bookmark keyword searches."
Not necessarily. You can add bookmarks like these: http://bookmarklets.com/tools/search/srchbook.phtml to your links bar to allow you to search sites straight from the link. When you click, a javascript prompt appears and asks you for your search terms (or uses whatever you have hilighted), then visits the appropriate URL for that search query. - snypa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I used to use the Google Toolbar for FF, but it causes the worst memory leak, my FF was using 200k+ with just 4 tabs open. I uninstaled it, and it went to a modest 60k. I just use the built in search bar, which is good enough for me. I'm sick of toolbars anyway.
- jakatak, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4there are a million reasons that you don't want your activity being tracked by anyone. One example is if you are doing research on a start up company or a new patent or anything you want to keep private because it would give people info on your business plans that you don't want them to know about until your ready to announce it.
Privacy is important. The day we give that up is the day we lose our freedom in this country. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Firefox Custom Buttons extension is nice for creating link buttons (or more advanced stuff if you want to get into it). I wrote a quick how-to you can find here:
http://silassewell.com/blog/2006/jul/22/firefoxbuttons/ - tyler0is0sexy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where is my FireFox support :(
- Daz_Genetic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't care too much about custom buttons, but I'm really missing the google bookmarks in the firefox toolbar.
- Burritovision, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I want a *browser* that does this. A toolbar is basically a doggy door for viruses in my opinion.
- Icyfenix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0FTLOG they ARE supported, just click the symbol next to the URL and drag to the toolbar. Enable short buttons in the options, Tada! Special, magical buttons that are actually just links.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Just for this, B U R I E D.

et al. - etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -20/+6Why would you run a toolbar that reports all your browsing habits?
- seanslater, on 10/12/2007, -23/+1Did you even read the comment above yours?
