- acidburn85, on 10/12/2007, -26/+81why would anyone want or need to do this?
- Cronus6, on 10/12/2007, -6/+29What else are you going to run on your old 80386/80486?
Not everyone follows or needs to follow the "upgrade path" of Apple/M.S.
If the system still works and does want you want it to do why not use it?
I still use my old 486 to play Wing Commander Privateer once in a while... - nbx909, on 10/12/2007, -5/+27http://thepiratebay.org/details.php?id=3448811
win 3.1 torrent - gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -6/+27Dugg for the "wtf?" factor.
- Xiol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15"What else are you going to run on your old 80386/80486?"
Linux.
@Rhine - You have dodgy hardware. I manage 500 XP desktops on a daily basis and not one of them has bluescreen in months unless it's dodgy hardware, or a PEBKAC. - tempusrob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Rhine23: Can't help but wonder what kind of hardware you're trying to run XP on then. The ONLY time I ever BSOD'd on my XP box was when I accidentally installed the wrong driver version for a TV card.
- SuperJdynamite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Has anybody written a theme for XP that looks like 3.11?
- debian_, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Find some 3.11 images online and use VMware.
- JJP0223, on 10/12/2007, -11/+20I want to install my 3.1 and check this out, but I don't have a floppy drive anymore. HAHA
- michaelg, on 10/12/2007, -13/+22wtf... IE7!?!? please no
- odysseus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10What I like about it is he renamed "Recycle Bin" to "Trash Bin", which is what MS should of called it in the first place, if they weren't promoting their hippy environmental agenda.
- pyromithrandir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Okay, I think we all know that this is begging to be used as a prank. Install Windows 3.1 someone else's comp and make it look like XP. See how long it is until they try to strangle themselves (or you if they find out ;) )
- funderbolt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Wing commander was hard to get to run on windows because of the Protect Mode it used conflicts with Windows 9x/NT/2000/XP protect mode. Heck, it was hard enough to get some games to run under DOS.
Retrograming is not dead my friend. There are many places to download oldgames and abandonware if you just search.
It (and this) is about the nostalgia of what we did on computers back in the day. Like most people, I like to revisit, but there are many computing advances that I can't live without today (e.g. the Internet, scripting languages).
Back in my day sonny, you had to edit your CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT to get the game to even try to work. Then, you had to multiple copies of CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT to optimize for some resource intensive games (16 Megs of XMS RAM!) you were playing.
I remember at one point my ProLogic soundcard used three IRQs (Interrupt ReQuest). The x86 architecture has 16 and they are used for various functions like keyboard polling, disk drive access, and the like so when something happens on the device's end it Interrupts the flow of the program to process the data that is comming in. My soundcard used 3 (an insane amount), so I attached a physical switch to the jumper so I could free the IRQ back and use it for something else (10+ years ago is a little fuzzy right now). Thank Gates (and Intel?) we don't have to deal with IRQ conflicts anymore (those were the pits). - Mike89, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I must personally ask why people have a problem with Windows 98's existence.
My sisters PC (only about 400 mhz), which she uses soley for MSN, email and some school work, still runs Windows 98. Why should I "upgrade" it to XP? It does what she needs, and I dont have to spend forever and a day making sure all the updates go through.
The machine runs without a firewall or any antivirus software (she's not directly connected to the internet so it's not as stupid as it sounds). Give me one reason she needs to upgrade. - rdoger6424, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Google Video Link:

Developers developers developers developers developers developers developers developers developers! - Cronus6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Actually MS used to call the recycle bin the "Trash Can"...
Back in the day Apple filed a lawsuit over the fist few versions of windows... The ONLY thing the courts ruled was 'infringement' was the "Trash Can" and the file folder icons...The rest of the GUI (the courts ruled) was NOT infringement.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_v._Microsoft - J5o1h8n, on 10/12/2007, -9/+15seriously, anyone who hates to junk old (but good working) computers. Anyone who likes to play old games.
Anyone who does not care that his/her old P11 running 98SE on the Internet can get a virus, spy ware or whatever and all they have to do is reload the OS. IMHO - Googled, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Shh just close your eyes and pretend you didn't read it.
Theres obviously something wrong with him
:) - Meshyf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8This is an awesome waste of time. Welcome to the internet. We love it here. :D
- regeya, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12Terribly sorry to hear that you lack the imagination to figure this one out on your own.
- rasbill, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10id have to say as a old 3.1 user this is wicked cool
- karamba_kid, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13hehe, and it's just as good as the real thing!
- seanmc303, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Who let this Vista spoiler out of the bag!!!
- MrsApril, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7i know alot of people who still use older versions of windows. Why change it if it's working for them?
- jj555298, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I have to agree with fluffyarmada, once I started to think about it old OS's are like a piece of history. I like to collect them too :)
- volatileacid, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7One for the third world ;D -
maybe the Iranians could use it to bring their nuclear weapons programme up to date! - evilpig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yes, It came with WindowBlinds 4 I think.
- FluffyArmada, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I think using old OSs is all sorts of fun. I got bored once and used Virtual PC to install every release of Windows ever sold. ;-) [ with exception of some windows *.*s ]
I had a Windows 3.11 [ i think ] for Workgroups
Windows 95
Windows 98
Windows ME
Windows 2000
and Windows XP
I just enjoy crap like this. It's like people who collect antiques.
If I still had my Win3.1 virtual machine, I'd play around with this. - retawd, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12Heh, its still a beta..
- spect3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why do people use 3.1? The same reason why people play atari. Nostalgia.
- StealthTomato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3dugg simply because it's a cool idea.
- veracon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Because you can.
- iamagrenade, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5to better resemble the interface they have at home, silly. What if you need to fire the person working the 3.1 computer and hire some young guy whose never seen anything but XP?
- cdreiling, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Can I get it on 7 floppies?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Sweet! Now I don't have to pay to upgrade my win 3.1 to XP!!!
- gekkokid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3for me this is awesome news, i have a side project where im converting old laptops into web access points for old people to surf the web they are use to winXPHome and it confuses them to use anything else,
All they use is the web (they hate flash and fancy crud), email and to make basic letters, so this is sweet news - kenfagerdotcom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I used to run Calmira on a Toshiba Satellite laptop with a black and white screen, 4mb of ram, and a funky trackball add-on. Digg for nostalgia. It made Win 3.11 purr...
- gtg697w, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5its funny because most users run windows XP in "classic view" to make XP look more like 3.1
- jwalk81980, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4We've switched Joe's regular Windows with Foldger's new Calmira XP. Let's see if he can tell the difference.
- andreo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6A Windows 3.1 mod. Hmm, a little late... Could this mean that Duke Nukem forever could be right around the corner?!
But serious. Pretty cool that this was written. But I'm sure that the people still running 3.1 won't isn't really browsing around anywhere to actually find this. - ToadX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Holy crap. Now I've got a good reason to go back to Windows 3.1! I don't have to worry about spyware either!
- WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Maybe some people are still using Windows 3.1.1 for vertical apps...guess it could be useful to have better workflow integration with recent computers...
- lagerbottom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I have a bunch of old machines. And I also have one that runs 3.1. It's fun somtimes to mess around with old hardware and software.
- ddudewazup, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9my granpas old computer runs windows 3.1 on it i found it in his basement..... he designed his house on xhome3d i can't imagine even typing on that old thing
- AngryWookiee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Ahh.... Windows 3.1 the memories....
- StealthTomato, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4*psst!* Start -> Run -> "progman"
- tnwake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I had a program for 3.11 that added the minimize, maximize and X buttons to all windows plus it added a taskbar with a start button. It was really cool.. in 1997 before upgrading to 95.
I'm not sure what's more pathetic.. people still running 3.11 or people still designing software for 3.11 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2damn and I just upgraded from windows 3.11 to windows 95. Maybe I will load this on my new 486 tandy, and print some screen shots on the dot matrix.
- DietrichM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Official website: http://www.calmira.net/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5I used Windows 3.1 until I bought a piece of software that said I needed Windows 95 or better.
So I installed Linux. -
