- jesusphreak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You know, even if you don't personally like Google, the competition it is producing between Yahoo, Google, and MSN is great. Yahoo and MS have both really started to clean up their interfaces lately.
- TechnoPops, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Did any body notice that both yahoo and M$ also add suffix "BETA" to their latest webmail service, just like GMail beta? How COINCIDENT ..."
Nah, can't pass judgment yet. Wait and see if they both keep their services in beta forever, too, THEN you can point fingers. :P - ntufar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And by the way, will it work with Firefox? Opera?
- Twelve-60, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Google seems a lot clunkier all of a sudden"
Uh, no. Gmail is far from clunky, and far exceeds any other webmail. - peace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did any body notice that both yahoo and M$ also add suffix "BETA" to their latest webmail service, just like GMail beta? How COINCIDENT ...
- dustpupy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When Y!/Hotmail offer free POP# access as well as SSL for authentication AND viewing mail, it'll be time to give them another look. Until then, I'll be keeping my Gmail account.
- BigMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Looks like Outlook Web Access in Exchange 2003. Expect limited functionality in anything not IE. GMail still rocks!
- emiles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Man, even if every feature in this thing blows GMail away (GMail didn't invent conversation threading by the way). I will still stick with GMail because I just want to stay on the Google side of things. Its neat to see every one of Google's new products fit together, and I've noticed my Google account info (heck, I thought I was just signing up for email) stretching farther and farther across the top of google.com each month, which to me signals more and more goodness.
- peerk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm suprised MS didn't do something like this sooner(make all their mail services look the same).
Plus they have had outlook web access for awhile. - bryan8m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The screenshots make this thing look terrible in my opinion.
- spyhunter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0None of these services have copied GMail's core innovation, which is keeping related emails together on one page as a conversation, including emails you sent. These other services are all just Outlook in your browser. Big whoop, Microsoft has had that for years; it's called Outlook Web Access and it sucks just as much as regular Outlook.
- Gunnaf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+01. As someone mentioned, free POP and SSL? Im assuming no
2. Conversation threading is nice, but IMO one of the most useful ideas applied to Gmail that I have not read is being applied to this or ymail is LABELS... Gmail's applying of LABELS is sooo much better than the traditional folder idea in my opinion...
3. I didn't see MS proactively offering more than 2MB of space prior to Gmail
The only thing Gmail is lacking right now in my opinion is a decent way to manage and organize your contact list, and Distribution Lists and I cant help but think they are working on it. On top of all that, as someone else said, the competition and changes (not only for email providers) they have been spurring has been awesome. - Mungoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Still not giving up my gmail.
- Aooogah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hmmm, seems very familar... I wonder where I've seen that layout before.
[/sarcasm] - csansbury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is that finally as in TERMINAL or finally as in AT LAST
- Flogin_Molly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Still not giveing up Gmail....
- dignan2681, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If by "clunky" they mean "clean" I agree. I love GMail for the same reason I love having Google as my home page. It is clean and simple yet feature-rich.
- BxBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Me neither.
- Mark_H, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0jesusphreak makes a great point. The more competition that any service has, the more it will have to better itself to try to compete.
- MarcoRaaphorst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0not sure about Mail versus Gmail. And Mail might be not 100% compatible with Open Standards and browsers like Firefox because MS wants to push you to use IE. Same as for the Windows Update pages which you can't use with Firefox.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Viva la Gmail! That GUI looks boring anyway. Want Outlook? Well for f_ck's sake use Outlook (the Office 2003 version)! Gee!
- unmarked, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0while I do like the "Reading Pane" as a third column, I think (hope) other services (Yahoo, Gmail, ) will move in that direction as well, at least as an option.
- rhyno2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BigMike said it. GMail is still be king. Not because "ooh it's AJAX!" or "ooh it's GOOGLE!!". Because it's FAST. It works pretty much like the way desktop applications do, and that's why it's a hit. If the new 'Mail' matches or beats this speed, with it's familiar Outlook-style interface, they might have to make a bigger throne.
- PacoBell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nothing I've seen there goes over and beyond Gmail thus far. I'm also sticking with my Gmail, thank you very much =)
- ntufar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd rather see them fix their spam filter first. I would like to youse this Mail thing but I can use my Hotmail account because it gets 20 - 50 spam mails everyday.
- da_bradler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1microsoft is useless outlook is the worst mail program out there by far, anything inpired by it is just starting off on the wrong foot, there just going to make things harder for everybody else but making things only work with IE and windows
- frem001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0why don't they keep the same name, Apple has an app called mail, Microsoft should just stop now.
- neutrino, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0mesach - labels are better than folders, or you can use them just like folders if you want.
general - microsoft might possibly be the least creative company out there - they have a long tradition of waiting for someone else to think of a clever idea, and then copying it - this mail app seems to just continue that tradition. - kungfustickman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It seems like I'm using the word "finally" when refering to Microsoft these days.
- zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow this very interesting. I guess that they noticed that Hotmail sux. I used Hotmail back in the day when I would get constant warning messages that my mail box was full and I was loosing messages and the reason my mail box was full it was full of spam.
Then they decided that if you wanted to download pop message from there Hotmail. you could no longer do it with Outlook Express you could only do it with full outlook application. Oh great just want I want spam and my contact list grabbed by a worm and published to the internet, Not. Screw you M$
Hotmails UI is full of banner and windows. On a cell phone connection it would take me up to 1min before I could get to my mail.. sorry my spam. I'm glad to see them fix this mess but I'm sticking with gmail.
All big companys turn evil in the long run.
its fun watching M$ run.
Dance Monkey Boy Dance.. - jhowe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"It seems like I'm using the word "finally" when referring to Microsoft these days." - kungfustickman
I agree completely. 6 months - 1 year ago I was disappointed with most of MS's products. It really seems like they're trying a lot harder now.
Are they scared? - FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hey people! what the hell are you doing? are you actually *discussing* something from M$? why? everyone knows that no matter what they claim, no matter what they offer, and no matter what anything else, it's from M$. this means only one thing. IT WILL BE CRAP. over its lifetime, its degree or crapitude may vary (slightly), but be assured any feature that is even remotely good, or god forbid, innovative (ha!), it will be crippled or won't work correctly, or will only be free until everyone's hooked (just like hotmail's "spam-blocker" that doesn't actually block any spam whatsoever).
who gives a flying ***** if it looks pretty? that just means that everything else will be even worse as a result. not to mention that they will probably got to insanely great lenghts to do whatever they must to make sure it only works in IE. - goldthroat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Im with Gmail all the way, however I still have Hotmail for my junk mail account. Whenever I sign up for something, or buy something I give out my Hotmail address. Eventhough Gmail has good spam filters I don't want to chance screwing it up.
- Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm gonna switch from gmail when it comes out just the sheer fact it is going to be faster, more organized and very fast to use
- wetelectric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Google seems a lot clunkier all of a sudden"
stay off that pipe. Its bad for you. - outerspaceapple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0no digg, it sucks.
- blogkitten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't "think" Gmail has anything to worry about, that is. Goodness.
- sarasweet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nah.... no thanks.
- Ruckgesicht, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mail. Wow. Very... Original, there, Microsoft.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Smokezz, a Web version would be. However the application itself is rather good IMO.
- Smokezz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So if its based on Outlook, it'll be bloated, buggy, and generally a peice of *****?
- Mesach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The only thing i dont like about Gmail is the inability to create folders
- anagami, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0lame
- DiScDuCe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Google seems a lot clunkier all of a sudden."
Are you kidding yourself ... this is like Outlook Web Access from Exchange! Mail looks like a clump of crap all jammed into a browser. Too many options and not enough features. I bet it won't even run in non-IE browsers either ... just like OWA. (active x, blah) - blogkitten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good lord, I have 8 email address that I use for various purposes. I even have a hotmail account.
But this? It's like polishing a turd. When you're all done, and it's all nice and shiny, it's still a turd.
I don't thing Gmail has anything to worry about - djrbx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sorry, but I personally don't like gmail, hotmail, nor Y! mail. I use a service called Walla located at http://walla.com
Walla works for me and it is simple. And an added bonus, they offer 3G of space. - feakbeak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's been mentioned a few times already but the free POP and SSL offerings by gmail is a huge advantage for many users. I wonder if Mail will be forced to use Outlook/Outlook Express on the client-side or if you can use any mail client via POP or IMAP or something - I'm skeptical.
Still, this new web interface with the panes does seem head and shoulders above the current Hotmail system. It also seems like they are adding many of gmail's features - clean interface, hotkeys, etc. - Odwalla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0> Anyone wanna guess when Microsoft and Apple are gonna try
> to get the name "E-mail" patented?
OOh! Ooooh! (raises hand) I will! I will! My guess is NEVER, as I'm sure both Microsoft and Apple have people smart enough to know that you can't patent a word or phrase. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Again, GMAIL wins.
- jplockie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0POP/SMTP access is clutch. I don't even use the webmail service by Google ???
Who cares -
