- Bossy, on 10/10/2007, -4/+25Whats the difference between Mahalo toolbar and other spyware toolbars that track your surfing habits to make alternative suggestions?
I would not want it. The toolbar itself takes up over 25% of the browser window. - eviljim, on 10/10/2007, -6/+16I saw this guy speak at Gnomedex, the guy is an delusional ass that has a strong conviction that he is part of an elite class... which is exactly how Mahalo works: people you don't know decide what the most important sites are for a specific topic. Is it biased? According to the founder, no, because "he doesn't allow bias."
Right.
Besides that, it's essentially just Yahoo Directory. Hand picked websites for specific topics.
He was also self-contradictory... he blames the world for allowing the web to get "covered in spam", including google/yahoo sponsored listings. And when asked what happens when his VC funding runs out, well, "the most coveted advertising is search advertising"...
What a prat. I will love watching this fail. - dirkytheDIGGler, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5"follows your browsing, constantly evolving the results it presents based on the sites you visit."
i don't want it following my activities. - Scruffydan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+5yes god forbid that reporters actually talk to people involved in the subject they are reporting on..
- dcharti, on 10/10/2007, -5/+6The spam topic is a serious one though, especially since Google just nuked one of its own official product blogs because they thought it was spam:

Mahalo might not have the perfect solution just yet, but all things considered at the present state of all the available tools, they have a great idea with using the wisdom of the masses and human power to filter the stream of the web for the genuinely important resources. - EntrepreNerd, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Oh, and one more thing. There is NO WAY this made it to the front page without a great many people working together to game the system. Perhaps a slap in the face to Kevin from Mr. FailsAlot.
- Drewsufer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Hmm... Mahalo..
Resident Evil 4 anyone?
Haha - EntrepreNerd, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3What a pointless waste of web space. I find it most amusing that they have been forced to add Google Search Results & Sponsored Links. It would seem that they do not have the man power or interest to keep a well stocked supply of user submitted content so they are forced to become yet another search engine 'using' Google to ensure their service in not totally useless.
People need to stop funding this dude. - Mysk, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2This thing watches everything that you browse. Reports your search term back to Mahalo. Reports the websites that you view. You are basically giving them direct access to everything that you do on the web.
/sarcastic:
Yeah, that seems like a fantastic idea. Go right on ahead and do that. Never mind your privacy or anything frivolous like that. After all, if this fantastically glow-happy article conveniently skips over ANY mention of the subject, then, well, it must not be that important.
/sarcastic - Jammerdelray, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Mahalo my brotha
- hackman2007, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Do you realize what you are giving Google? Remember the doubleclick cookies? You obviously need to read more into the current news. Google gets just as much information as Mahalo gets.
- superpixel, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1"Glad to see that someone is innovating search."
I love how the guy/gal/Martian who says this on digg sits at -1 on his comment.
Just say NO to gladness!
Just say NO to seeing!
Just say NO to someone!
Just say NO to innovation!
Just say NO to search! - Roger, on 10/10/2007, -6/+6Does anyone actually care about Mahalo? Seems pretty useless/doomed to me.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Yummm spyware you install yourself, so much easyier for the NSA
- hiPpymIck, on 10/10/2007, -11/+10"I had the chance to speak with Jason Calacanis, founder of both Mahalo and Weblogs, Inc. (this blog's parent company) yesterday about Follow"
..might be a conflict of interest there - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2This is one thing we have to stop doing guys. We are fans of Digg and Kevin and everything Kevin Rose (Pownce, diggnation, tss, etc etc) but we have to stop saying that everything Jason Calacanis does is trash just because they're rivals. If something is good or has potential then it's worth checking out. Pownce at the moment is really nothing more than fancy email but it has potential to grow. I liked Mahalo's concept at first but it's nothing much. Nevertheless I know it has good potential. It will grow... Say the facts, that this has good potential...
- dgarallenpoe, on 10/10/2007, -5/+4Glad to see that someone is innovating search.
- hackman2007, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0The difference between this toolbar and other spyware toolbars is this one doesn't slow down your computer and shows you relevant search results while you are browsing. It doesn't collect any of your personal information. It also show any pop-ups. You are also free to close the window at the left and open it when you want to.
- frakilk, on 10/10/2007, -5/+4This is Digg front page material? This is nothing ground breaking. This reeks of a concerted effort to promote Mahola IMO. If if is then shame on those responsible.
- hackman2007, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Were you aware that nothing on the web is original? Even Google get's it's results from somewhere. Google is just a giant database filled with everything you can imagine, malware included.
- Scruffydan, on 10/10/2007, -5/+3I am an idiot, please bury the above comment.
- souvey, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2Well, for one thing, it has no advertising. Secondly, its not a tracking toolbar that throws in suggestions as an excuse for tracking. Its a suggestion toolbar that has to know what site you are visiting to work.
As for "the toolbar itself [taking] up over 25% of the browser window", you are wrong on many levels. First of all, unless your screen is cell phone size, the toolbar would not take up 25% of the screen. Secondly, its clear that you are confused and are actually thinking of the sidebar (which is located on the side, rather than with all the other toolbars). Thirdly, you have likely never used this extension or Firefox, or else you would know that although in the screenshot (which is probably as far as you went), the sidebar takes up 25% of the screen, the firefox sidebar is resizeable.
At least try it out next time before you insult it - melindaengland, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0Mahalo Follow is much more than just a toolbar. Mahalo's pages are specifically created for particular search terms and when a page is available on Mahalo (if it's not, then request it or create it) Follow will show it to you and you can get very specific, relevant links with just the click of a button. No more wading through all of the spam, splogs, and ads. Give it a try you may like it, if you don't then don't use it. If you haven't yet installed it from another guide please feel free to do it here http://greenhouse.mahalo.com/Special:FollowDownload?id=459 Thanking you in advance, Melinda.
- PatrickA, on 10/10/2007, -10/+8Rumor has it that the toolbar is *****.
- Lick, on 10/10/2007, -5/+2Usually I use Search Engines to find new content. Haven't I already visited the whole web-circle of the websites I visit?
- xmadmardiganx, on 10/10/2007, -12/+9The "Directory" feature of Mahalo Follow is truly impressive.

- lowerkyle, on 10/10/2007, -11/+4Nice work paragonmatrix, first to post your link here.
Well, if you don't download Follow from the above link (which you should since he posted first), then download it here:
http://greenhouse.mahalo.com/Special:FollowDownload?id=374
You really should download Mahalo Follow and use it if you don't believe in Mahalo. Give it a chance. Follow will help to show you why you should use Mahalo instead of, or alongside, your current search engine. - dcharti, on 10/10/2007, -10/+3I included two direct links to the Follow plugin in this post. It's at:
