- sharigan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3the site missed "Irfanview" T__T
- robotwisdom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i've had great luck with this one:
http://www.techsupportalert.com/best_46_free_utilities.htm - f0rked, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Of course the list is biased, it's his list. However, his preference for small, no ***** applications to perform the tasks that he needs to get done may be shared by many other people. Are you forgetting the criterion for the list? It even says on the page: "My general rule for the best applications is simple, fast, configurable and low resource consumption."
While you may disagree with the list, ask yourself what the list is *for* prior to commenting. - Sculptor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Amazing how spiteful some of you are. I pity you.
As for the list. It is a useful bunch of mostly free apps, yet a nod to retail that are very much worth some coin. It made it to the front page of Digg because a lot of people liked it, so I have some good company in this. Thanks Jessiecrouch. - regedit2D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1oh yeah, and WinAmp sucks, but I suppose it's all a matter of taste
- theMaxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A list worth reading for once!!
- jkearney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very useful list of software to check out. I found myself liking them all. Good read!
- westfall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pretty good list.
- hafetysazard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Awesome :D
- battybattybatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"white(8) "so windows is an app now?"
Of course, it always has been."
But, u u uuu u u uh, I am a t r o l l. - jellomizer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oddly enough most of these apps run on different OS's as well. Only a very few actually were for windows only. If this is the list of the best apps for Windows switching to OS X or Linux shouldn't be much of a hassle. Because most of your apps should transfer over no problem.
- regedit2D, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1he did mention Firefox, just not his favorite. And I agree. While firefox is a great browser, Opera blows every browser out of the water. If it would only support my biometric reader, I wouldn't be forced to use IE...
- Cronos1388, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1cool +1 digg
- PlayWithFire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1gets a dig from me, there's a few apps i am about to check out, that are new to me
Most of those are installed on my box already - nymphetamine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i use opera, but i think that firefox is better, only because of the extensions.
- vstarre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what do you mean "why no nod to firefox"? Read the thing! It's right there! A Nod!
- ahawks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1JDiskReport is better (faster and multi-platform, at least) than WinDirStat.
It's Java based. Get it at: http://www.jgoodies.com/freeware/jdiskreport/ - wookiekiller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cool digg
- mgreenwald, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I especially like the little calendar app. Rainlendar. Its very nice best I've seen yet. But seriously who doesn't use WinAMP? And more importantly why? 5.1 is amazing and it works with my iPod.
- antispammer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1not the "Best" list, but a decent list
- snowthrower, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Decent list, there are alot better programs for some of those, like Firefox, Sunbird, Araneae and iTunes.
- mnm1200, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0white(8) "so windows is an app now?"
Of course, it always has been. - RyGiL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I tried rainlendar but it used too much memory... but it looked cool :)
For my calendar, I use my company's exchange server. I can log in through a website or use outlook. I know that this opportunity isn't available to us all though but if it is. - saskboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Lame, lame, and LAME."
I agree, LAME is pretty good. I get it in CDex which can be found on http://sf.net and is the best audio ripper. It has a CDDB button too, to populat the track info. - matx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Some good apps on there, some good apps missing??
- khintzma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where's the mention for Microsoft AntiSpyware, Flash FXP, Adaware, Gmail Drive, and Windowblinds?
- saskboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Opera may be good, but why no nod for Firefox or Mozilla Suite? Suite is great if you need a WYSIWYG WWW editor.
- DewayneSmith, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I do like the calender...
- LowGan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0GG.
- Rirath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A decent list, though fairly obvious.
www.pricelessware.org is much more complete. - DanVersion1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nice list, it even persuaded me to check out some of the ones I had never heard about.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Too bad there is no windirstat type thing for Linux, at least none I could find.
- dtm1017, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0good list...curious to why he didn't mention firefox or any mozilla product
- teh_toaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0a few on the list are good, a few could be better. i cant change it, so i wont argue.
- trampish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great list, could be alot more comprehensive... maybe categorize by primary function and expand further. Nice work though... DIGGITY+
- rxvt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They are all available for download by just entering their name at http://www.qdownload.net/
- ajamison, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How many times can this person use the phrase "no-*****"?
Get a thesaurus.
Oh, and Windows XP itself being in the list? How ridiculous. - battybattybatt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"irfanview sucks"
Liar.
The Parrot is pretty good. - CapTech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Definitely a list of apps everyone should at least take a look at... and best of all... most of them are free.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Good list, I wished he would have put up a link to download that windows thingy sounds like a cool app.
Oh yeah and f0rked does anyone here consider windows xp to be simple, fast, and configurable. You may have read the criterion for the list, but you didnt read the list!! - mgreenwald, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Uhhhhh... WinAMP! WinAMP! WinAMP! WinAMP! WinAMP!
- khintzma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Sorry for the second post, but I just remembered another favorite:
The Sony Rootkit. I find it highly useful. - Choppy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Meh. Not bad, but the list is very opinionated.
- Achilles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0irfanview sucks
- white, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0so windows is an app now?
- zoomie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Big Deal!!! I could understand a 10 ten list from a major publication, but this is just one guy's personal website with a list of his favorite apps. How is this newsworthy? My list of favorite fast food restaurants merit just as much newsworthiness.
- ptknight, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I hate these pretentious 'best of' lists... No digg
- DewayneSmith, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Linux and Mac users, quit screaming lame because you don't count. You have your 2% of the market share. Stick with it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Um best windows programs? I don't like windows but to each his/her own I agree with some of that list, but I think that there is one app missing Winamp. Winamp is like the only great program I think windows has to offer. also I think that windows shouldn't be under that list.
- Bollix, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Don't forget Solitaire. Best PC game EVAR!!11!!!
