Awesome. - inputname, on 12/03/2008, -3/+19Dugg for lego dude holding chocolate coin...
- LANjackal, on 12/03/2008, -1/+13IMO Digsby has been the most impressive by far. No other app allows users to manage multiple email, IM and social networking accounts from a single interface with such ease. Before Digsby, I had to either keep my email client or browser open to watch for new mail, and the latter didn't allow me to monitor all my accounts. Oh yeah, and did I mention the ability to use Facebook chat without being tied to a browser? How about the chat notification pop-up feature that allows you to chat without losing focus on the current desktop window?
It's not a perfect app by any means - lazydrumhead points out that selective text is a no-go, as are managing several AIM profiles (Digsby allows more than one AIM account but only 1 profile, which is stupid).
With uTorrent now offering a Mac version, Digsby has become THE killer app for the most widely used OS, Windows. - lazydrumhead, on 12/03/2008, -1/+11Digsby is so much better now than it was last year.
But it still can't do selective text effects (like, if you say 'bold', it makes everything bold) - vtnerd, on 12/03/2008, -0/+10http://www.getdropbox.com
If you use more than one computer regularly, you need it. 2GB of free storage space online and it automatically syncs files between all computers and then makes those files available through a web interface as well. It keeps old revisions and has an undelete feature.
Definitely should have been on the list. - Grazfather, on 12/03/2008, -2/+9Dugg for XBMC
- crazlunatic, on 12/03/2008, -6/+11I would say either Firefox or iPhone app Store, probably Firefox since it had a bigger impact although I believe the iPhone experience was more improved overall.
Firefox changed the way I would browse the net. The address bar naturally doubles as a search engine on your own history as well as a typical address bar. I've also tweaked it so it functions like chromes address bar and can triple as a google search engine as well. This probably increased my productivity on the net by 300% xD. The download manager is now actually considered better than IE's. It was mediocre at best before Firefox 3.
But the app store ultimately was better improved. The iPhone experience back then was nothing like today's without the store. - schnikies79, on 12/03/2008, -1/+4That's just not the case. Sorry.
- twigboy, on 12/03/2008, -0/+3i couldnt decide between firefox 3 or digsby.
eventually i chose ff3, mainly because i use it more regularly than digsby
but not to say that the speed and memory improvements on either applications were less than impressive. - Beatmiser, on 12/03/2008, -0/+3When Google Chrome:
1) Has a Mac Version
2) Can Run Netflix 'Watch Instantly'.
I will totally agree with you. - kelchm, on 12/04/2008, -0/+3Its a great browser, stfu.
- d4ftpunk, on 12/03/2008, -10/+12What the hell is Chrome doing on this list?!
- td001, on 12/03/2008, -1/+3dugg for Boxee.. yeah!!!
- prashant90, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2Dugg for Lifehacker itself.. These people are doing amazing job .
- kelchm, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2So right you are. (about the fact that its your opinion)
- aguita, on 12/03/2008, -2/+4While everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I found Chrome quite lacking. It has some security issues (not flaws mind you, default behaviors that I don't like), has a lack of features, and seems to be more of a technology prototype than a browser. Sure, it runs JS fast. Sure, it has tabs, and each tab has its own thread. I'd like my browser to be more than that though. Once they have extensions and add-ons, then I will probably revisit it.
- rodrigo74, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2"productivity on the Net" is an oxymoron...
- ExRe, on 12/03/2008, -0/+2I noticed that on the list and was wondering how it compared to using each individual IM application.
I used to use Trillian for everything but MSNM, but it sucked so much I just tossed it and only use MSNM. - skyshock1, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2Transmission! It's improved so much this year.
- TheMaXeR, on 12/03/2008, -18/+19Ubuntu
Awesome.
;p - DimensionalPunk, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1MediaPortal 1.0 will be out before x-mas and looks great.
- skyshock1, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1I don't know, aside from the newest Alpha release, Firefox has pretty much become more and more bloated and sluggish with each release.
- miketowninc, on 12/22/2008, -0/+1I'm sorry Javascript is not the only thing chrome does faster!!! It open alot faster!!. I dont run any extensions or plug ins on firefox since I dont use it and it still take 50 seconds to OPEN!!!! chrome takes 15 ish.
and lets not talk about ram usage - rrbaker, on 01/15/2009, -1/+2Ubiquity has a lot of promise but I think at v.0.1.1 it's gonna need a little more time in the oven. Next year's list, for sure.
- diggdatt, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1buried, im tired of this top 50 windows apps *****, this ***** hits the frontpage everyday
- coheedcollapse, on 12/03/2008, -1/+2Unless Trillian recently added social networking and mail to their newest client, they're not anywhere near Digsby. Also, so far, Digsby has been free. I have no idea of their future plans, but right now, Digsby is kicking Trillian's ass.
- coheedcollapse, on 12/03/2008, -1/+2Absolutely, I've been testing the program since alpha and I can't believe how much it's improved. All I need to be completely and 100% happy with Digsby is Flickr. I requested it a bit ago and they responded, but I think they're having troubles working with the API (or it's low on their list since those of us who want Flickr are sort of a minority).
Either way, Digsby is great. - cowsgonemadd3, on 12/03/2008, -1/+2Browse some pages a millesecond faster while others are 3 seconds slower than FF3.
- inactive, on 12/03/2008, -1/+2So basic OS improvements in Ubuntu, Andriod catches up to the iPhone. Seems like FF 3 is the only "big" item there. Also, only the guy who posted just before me is the only user of digsby.
- miketowninc, on 12/22/2008, -0/+1windows support where?
- kelchm, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1It really is a great client. It's the first client I've used that even beats Adium in many ways.
- LANjackal, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1Trillian's a joke, even when compared to Pidgin.
- miketowninc, on 12/22/2008, -0/+1what the hell is firefox doing on this list?!
How has it improved? - ultrafez, on 12/03/2008, -0/+1Fail.
- miketowninc, on 12/22/2008, -0/+1I am sorry but the changes between firefox 2 and firefox 3 were nearly nothing!!! Yes the awesome bar was innovative. But what else was? Hmm NOTHING!!! kinda sad.
Chrome 4eva lol - evilbob, on 12/08/2008, -0/+1Digsby, firefox, and unbuntu.
- ncraig, on 12/13/2008, -0/+1I am now a Mac user (Macbook Pro), I agree to your terms.
- deweyhewson, on 12/04/2008, -0/+1"'productivity on the Net' is an oxymoron..."
No, that would be a paradox. An oxymoron would be: Internet Productivity. - trollick, on 12/03/2008, -1/+1Save one millisecond on Javascript execution while wasting minutes because of lack of any functionality... I see.

- shallot, on 12/03/2008, -3/+3Zune didn't make the list ? I say lifehacker is biased to apple...Anybody who has used Zune 3 agrees that Zune is way way better than iTunes....
buried for cronisim... - scaricaregiochi, on 02/09/2009, -0/+0I would like to see an open language that can be compiled to at least an intermediate language for web browsers to replace JavaScript. It would secure the code better and would require type checking. And not owned by a company like Adobe or Microsoft.
