- titeuf, on 10/12/2007, -33/+102Because not everyone likes iTunes and some just prefer winamp
- trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+32You can access your music from your iPod without any programs. Just turn off hide hidden files and all your music is there. Works on both Windows and Mac.

you do realise that if you put mp3's onto your iPod they stay as mp3's? the DRM/AAC stuff is only for songs you download from iTunes or rip/encode from CD using iTunes. Also you do realise that mp3 is a proprietary format?
You seem grossly missinformed. - patrickweber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15When people say 'backup your data', they aren't joking around.
- patrickweber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14@MRC539: AFAIK that option is used for like.. If you are in the middle of downloading a song and your internet connection drops off it will let you restart that download until you finish it. If you have already completed the download and you lose the files, they won't let you redownload them.
- MrC539, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Actually, in iTunes you can go into Advanced -> Check for Purchases... If you're logged in it will download any songs that you purchased but don't have on your computer. Of course, backing up can never hurt.
- radaneo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+155.21 fixes the problem. It involves ml_ipod and the new ipod plugin (pmp_ipod) both trying to write to the iPod's database when the iPod is connected. 5.21 now disables ml_ipod if you CHOOSE to install pmp_ipod.
5.21 changelog:
* New: [jnetlib] HTTP compression support
* Improved: [installer] multi-user profile migration
* Fixed: [ml_wire] memory leak
* Fixed: [pmp_p4s] DRMclien.dll error
* Fixed: [gen_ff] skin info display in preferences
* Fixed: [in_mp3] Wordwrap disabled in Info Editor Comments field
* Fixed: [in_wm] Minor bug fixes
* Fixed: Keyboard shortcuts don't work from video window
* Fixed: [in_vorbis] No Artist metadata in stream titles
* Fixed: [in_dshow] floating point audio
* Fixed: ml_ipod and pmp_ipod conflict
* Updated: Coding Technology AAC+ Decoder 7.2.5 - cdgore, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15"And you can transfer your music back to you computer after a crash for free :) thats why i use it mostly"
http://www.yamipod.com/main/modules/home/
yamipod does this too. Also it's free and works on Windows, Mac, and Linux. - Rhine23, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19And you can transfer your music back to you computer after a crash for free :) thats why i use it mostly
- victorycig, on 10/12/2007, -12/+24Yeah, I have to say one of my least favorite aspects of the iPod is its stubborn refusal to play nicely with other sync programs. iTunes is (from what I've seen) the most reliable program to sync yer iPod, but I just hate its interface and lack of a "now playing" playlist. I wish Winamp would get their ***** together and include top notch iPod support with future versions of Winamp.
- Auzy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Now to be honest, I doubt that it screws up your ipod to the point that you cant restore it. Try putting it into disk mode (reset the ipod, and while its resetting, hold down the middle of the clickwheel and bottom). I'm betting that will let you restore it.
Now, why is it Winamps duty to report problems with a 3rd party plugin? Its like complaining that Mazda isn't warning people about a 3rd party brake customisation people are doing even though it probably said in the conditions that Mazda has nothing to do with the mod? Why should winamp have to create concern for people who aren't affected (the majority) because of a problem that barely any are affected by, and which they didn't create.
Finally, its an ipod, don't use third party software with it. If you dont want problems, use iTunes. Seriously, you wouldn't complain to open office every time their software didn't open a word file properly.
Don't think I'm going to digg this and I hope nobody else does. All I see is a bunch of people whining that their 3rd party ipod plugin for their third party software is having problems, and I'm betting that like most ipod customers we get into our store (I work at an applecentre) without doing any troubleshooting either - PillowFight, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17Daveecee...please, not another iTunes vs. Winamp discussion. Very quickly: iTunes is a bit of resource hog, and at least half its purpose is to get you to buy stuff from their store, which I am not interested in. I don't really like iTunes' way of organizing things, either. Anyway, the reason I posted this was I am just very disappointed that there was *no warning* about this plugin issue. I lost 18GB of music because of it.
- crackerjack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Exactly! Just because the plug in is listed on the page does not mean that Winamp is responsible for it! It's the plug in's creator who has to find and fix bugs.
If you lost your music because you didn't backup, that's your fault. If you can't figure out how to recover your iPod, that's your fault. You should have known the risks of using a program other than iTunes to sync with your iPod... it may not be the greatest program, but it's the only one that is backed by Apple and therefore (somewhat) safe. - foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8DAMN! it seems if ANYBODY posts in here even REMOTELY stating that he likes USELESS ol' winamp, with it's dsp effects and visualizations, over SLOW new itunes, with its monopolistic ipod sync capabilities and podcatcher, then he gets negged. GROW UP people. other people have OPINIONS, YA KNOW?
- titeuf, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13Uninstall the mp_ipod plugin and upgrade winamp, no problems then.
- Daveecee, on 10/12/2007, -46/+54Now, why in the world would somebody use their iPod with Winamp? One of its core features is the way it integrates with iTunes.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I don't really see any problem with the plugin, except everytime when i connect/disconnect my ipod while listening to music in Winamp, it crashes... That sucks :(
- trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12I think it's sort of sad to use Winamp 5 over iTunes. I can understand using Winamp 2 for it's fastness but Winamp 5 and syncing your iPod to it.. just sounds like trouble to me.
Then again I would never sync my iPod to my Windows computer anyway. ;) - PillowFight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It *was* on the ml_ipod side, but in 5.2 the plugin was integrated, so then the problem becomes a general Winamp problem. Was a little more than annoying for me.
- jmz668, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's not winamp's fault, it's a plugin. Use at your own risk.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8winamp was my #1. That was until I got an ipod. Been using itunes ever since and never looked back.
- NoahK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6For those who missed the post...
"5.21 fixes the problem. It was a conflict between ml_ipod and pmp_ipod, the new iPod plugin for the Media Library's portable media support." - Kyderdog, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7People still use Windows too... (Hey Someone had to say it :)
- lemon404, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I tested ml_ipod, than iTunes; while the first is extremely buggy, the second is boring to use. Si I downloaded XPLAY... Yup, a file manager for your iPod database... Simply drag files and folders to your iPod !
- lucask, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5ummm just dont load the portables support w/ 5.2, and if your ipod has allready been messed up don't worry, rename the itunes database (inside the ipod) to .old and it will create a new one and everything will be fine.
- JackDoyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Because iTunes sucks. Some people would like to have an iPod without being totally tied to iTunes.
- rm999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I use ephpod for my mini - is this plugin for winamp better (i am a winamp user)? Ephpod doesn't get updated anymore from what I can tell, so I wouldn't mind getting another program.
Also how do we know this problem isn't on the ml_ipod side instead of winamp's? - zen.state, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5walkmans play cassettes and cd and do not have solid state or hard disk storage. different people put different max prices based on personal taste and need.
- dongiaconia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You can also use Senuti to get the files off of your iPod. (Senuti = iTunes spelled backwards)
http://wbyoung.ambitiouslemon.com/senuti/
Personally, I just think its easier to open the iPod with explorer, show hidden folders, go into CONTROL and copy over the files. - RipperDoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I wrote a short tutorial on howto to use Winamp 5.2 and iPod together without any problems. Nothing especially new or spectacular in the tutorial, just a simple way to get it to work: http://blog.nogo.se/ .
- retawd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I would figure Winamp realised its hard to carry a computer while you are jogging..
- ScoTTeh, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Actually in my case I have too. My iPod is about a month out of warranty and for some reason iTunes will no longer recognise it (this has happened on multiple PCs with iTunes installed). So im forced to use Winamps mediocre iPod support.
- GuiBou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The main reason I see for the use of this special plug-in with Winamp is : Someone with an IPOD and only Windows 98 at home, I installed it a couple of times for "poor" customers... :) ( Itunes needs Win 2000 or XP)
- Vision77, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I'm using 5.1 it works perfect for me.
- forgeflow, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5The current plugin for iPod functionality is ml_pmp, not ml_ipod. Could it be your stuff is screwing up because you have two plugins trying to provide the same functionality?
- drummerjed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3it messed up my shuffle. but thats because i "tested" it out. didn't like it. itunes couldn't put files on after the winamp experiment, evern after del them in winamp. just restored the shuffle and it works fine now. uninstall the portables plugin and all is good. still perfer winamp for normal listening.
- salmonmoose, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4foobar and foo_pod although, foobar is a player you have to come to on your own, and I don't know how well foo_pod works, I went down the path of the iRiver so I never had to deal with all these synching troubles :)
- ytsebadd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Dugg, if only for the appropriate use of the word affect in a sentence.
- djdole, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Haven't used WinAmp in 5 years. Old software.
There's better software out there...
No digg. - auhsor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Everyone who is complaining should read radaneo's post. This issue with 5.2 has been fixed for over a week in 5.21.
- extant59, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4really? i ran into no issue with my ipod doing that. its ran just fine. i've used both the plud in and winamp... and itunes. i use all for different situations and it works great.
- Portfolioso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't blame winamp. mi_pod wiped my friend's ipod just as this described way before 5.2 came out. It's definitely a plugin problem. Perhaps 5.2 is causing this problem to come out more
Winamp does not support my Zen Micro, though it claims to. I can't get it working. I don;t think the plugin support is perfected yet. - PillowFight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Because auzy, as I said above, they INTEGRATED the plugin with Winamp in the new version. It's no longer a "plugin," dude. So yeah, it is a Winamp problem. And by not telling people that that you couldn't upgrade normally with the new version, they set up a lot of unwitting ipod users for misery. Wow, you work for an Apple Center? Quelle Surprise! I never would have guessed.
Now if you'll excuse me, I have some music to transfer from my backup drive. - Disodium, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5you mean you dont keep a copy on your hard drive? I thought everyone does this, i can reformat my ipod if needed and just re transfer it all.
- citrusfizz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4guys try media monkey... it has much much more features and it works swell with my ipod
- Unicron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ simx
You can do all the things you said you couldn't in winamp (as the guy above me said) but you can also make smart playlists, didn't even need a plugin ;)
Personally I dislike iTunes because it has a _huge_ interface and is soooo slow, also winamp does a much better job off putting badly tagged mp3's on your ipod in the right order.
Disclaimer: I got rid of iTunes as soon as I could, used it for a week or something - j.carcinogen, on 10/12/2007, -9/+11They are AOL fanboys rather than Apple.
- sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"You can access your music from your iPod without any programs. Just turn off hide hidden files and all your music is there. Works on both Windows and Mac."
but the id3 tag info and song names are all messed up. thats why MShad to hack the iPod software for the iPod to work with the xbox360. - drh2020, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Your title confused me - it made me think winamp had some new product that made ipod obsolete!
- lament, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2haven't read all the comments yet, so somebody might have already mentioned this. the new native ipod plugin for Winamp 5.2 was written by the same guy who made the ml_ipod plugin.
"Winamp 5.2 has been released, which has its own portable music player support. It doesn't yet have all the features of mlipod, but it will hopefully have most of them soon. Also, I wrote it, so I don't think I will be contributing much to the mlipod project anymore. If anyone else wants to start contributing in a major way, get in touch.
Thanks for the support and donations guys, it has been a fun couple of years." -
