- Kahnza, on 10/10/2007, -1/+26Yeah... let me know when there is actually something worth watching. Like actual live streaming cable channels. I'd be ecstatic if I could get the Discovery and History channels, identical to what I currently get on my cable box. Until then, its worthless.
- Tobiaswk, on 10/10/2007, -4/+24Joost doesn't really have anything I want to see... yet!
But I guess this is a good step forward. - randomgeek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Nothing, that was just his word of the day and he needed to use it in a sentence at least once.
- skoot, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Oh great, another widget platform!?
- skidooer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6The Facebook API opens up a lot of great possibilities. It's not their fault that people insist on installing the stupid and useless applications.
- LondonDude, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7I don't see many people using this other than the developers. I mean, who the hell wants to watch a show when it's covered in widgets?
- ivanpk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4and a Mac POWERPC version!!
- schallis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Correct me if i'm wrong but I didn't think Joost was capable of showing live streaming channels because of it's P2P nature. I figured it was more about episodic content packaged like a TV channel so documentaries and loads of other pre-recorded content are the best it's going to get. I agree the content they have now sucks though.
- blumph, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6lets hope it doesn't crap all over itself like facebook did. sure it may have opened up a market for another revenue avenue but seriously, facebook took a dump on it's chest that day and anthropomorphised itself into a hurricane-class *****-storm of stupid and imbecilic "apps". digg has shown how an api can be used to represent data in an intuitive way (although fb is a gold mine for data mining, lets hope it doesn't sell its sole to marketers)
/ my $0.02 - Atomic1fire, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4the hype around it died when people saw what it was offering the content sucks if they wanted to be more popular they would publicize it more then offer more content to suit the masses checking it out

You are wrong p2p can do live straming content like Zatoo or Sopcast or PPLive and Livestation (a Microsoft reaserch offshoot)
The reason that there is no live on Joost at the moment is that 85% of all content on TV is actuly pre recoded so its better to focus on the largest share of the market before you go and get live Sports News and Events . - Atomic1fire, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2if the widgets are useful more power to them such as tv guide, news feeds, instant messaging, stuff people would be interested in when looking at a tv platform but no cheap eye tactics that will be used by a few people then removed because they don't care anymore
- vibez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It should be capable, although I don't think that is what they intended to do. There are many p2p clients such as tvants that stream 'almost' live tv, albeit illegally.
- san1ty, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Joost has a problem, their traffic has been dropping consistently since their launch - see http://alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details?url=joost.com
- mercurysquad, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I think they should get out of a closed beta into at least an open beta before trying to add more features. And oh, also, put something worth watching instead of little clips in rotation!
- turpenine, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2well that is good enough for the discovery and history channel like he mentioned, we get all out late breaking news on the digg frontpage around here.
- schroeder, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2And I haven't been able to get anything to load in the last 3 updates. Also, I think the lack of content is because it is still in beta and buggy so the content providers aren't pushing any top shows. I think once the bugs are worked out and it comes out of beta the good shows will come over more and more and become a lot more popular. I think with what the web 2.0 are calling beta these days people forget what beta really means.
- siralphred, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3what they need to do is offer a linux version, that will increase their user base exponentially.
- basye, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Had it, used it for a week, deleted it.
- fbriggs, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2i have a beta of joost, and imho, it sucks majorlly. the interface is horribly unusable, and the streaming never works. i would rather they focus on making it a usable video deliverly platform that waste any more effort on adding useless widgets.
- tybris, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Hooray, another widget platform without users.
- hongy_r, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2it's "soul"
- nnny, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Widget Platform support but no PPC Platform Support? What gives Joost!?
- sliggy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1When it goes on PPC, ill use it
- ShadowCid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Joost does have at least one cool thing right now: The Original Transformers.
- Atomic1fire, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I dont see a reason for live tv
why wait for a show when you can watch it now - dillinger23, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The problem with JOOST is that of braindead technical decisions.
They rely on open incoming TCP AND unrestricted UDP for it to work.
Given that the majority of businesses, dorms and academic campuses
forbid BOTH, it is no surprise that they are destined to fail.
Their reason for this choice is that of speed (in their words udp is faster than tcp)
something which may have been correct a long time ago for certain applications
but surely robust realtime p2p can be done at this age using outgoing tcp only
(to get maximum coverage). Incompetence doesn't help and neither does
crappy content. - mrminty, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Man, if they had a PSP version... I would actually pay for that.
- shakestheclown, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1where can I subscribe to your content delivery network with more advanced technical implementation?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Pointless crap, nice job getting everyone at Joost HQ to digg this pointless waste of time
As someone said above, who wants to watch TV covered in widgets. And if I did I'd just activate dashboard - CarzorStelatis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Great, where do I sign up for the 'get programs that are not garbage' widget?
- wush, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0&mode=related&search=
- b05q, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1how about getting the core app to work first?
- Abomonog, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1GREAT! Now if only they would get some new content!
- Loshunter, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Why would you want it to be "live"? I thought the whole point of using the computer as opposed to the television was that it was what you want, when you want. On demand. That's all I want, to turn on the computer and realize since its 4 in the morning all I have to watch are infomercials. Or realize I've already missed the first half of everything that's on...
- Atomic1fire, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1unless the widgets are placed out of the way
or the screen size can be changed to have a widget bar on both sides - shakestheclown, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1_
- maxpower2911, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1What about Transformers G1, that is a show everyone on digg likes, right?
- iloveroundtable, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I agree, it's basically all the stuff on TV you just watch because there is nothing better on, and because you want a break from whatever it is you do on your computer (game, youtube etc.)

Some smart campuses are actually embracing Joost like Vanderbilt and there are some very sound reasons that Joost uses UDP for things like forward error correction and the fact that UDP is faster than TCP and doesn't need ACKs .

http://www.scaryideas.com/video/2362/ Joosts Network Architect explains the network - maninalift, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3"anthropomorphised itself into a hurricane-class *****-storm" What is anthropomorphic about a swirling pile of *****?
- slowmotiony, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Why would anyone bother to put joost on TV?
- glibby, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I agree with the sentiment, but god you said that badly.
- bombastica, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I hope this new API means Apple can implement it with iPhone/AppleTV/FrontRow and Microsoft/Sony can implement it on their platforms as well. This will put Joost in a lot of living rooms and we will see it really take off.
- kjcdude, on 10/10/2007, -4/+3To bad it doesn't work right.
Just installed it and it lags like a mother *****. - kidcodea, on 10/10/2007, -6/+4who cares... its dead.
- Uranium118, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Who else read "midget" ?
