- Lucas123, on 10/03/2008, -37/+350Thank you, thank you, thank you.
- verifex, on 10/03/2008, -62/+275I, for one, DO NOT welcome our performance-decreasing, drm-enforcing, overpriced, feature-thin overlords.
- Ravatar, on 10/04/2008, -7/+166Please kill IE6 at least, *****.
- ChristPissed, on 10/03/2008, -34/+147Just say NO to DRM infested bloatware.
- ExRe, on 10/04/2008, -17/+112Vista had a public Beta 2 test IIRC, as well as RC1 and RC2. I've used Vista all the way from Beta 1 to it's current release.
Vista was much more bug free than any other Windows OS at release. The only issues were from ***** companies making ***** drivers.
What MSFT needs to do is put some effort into marketing. Vista failed because they had terrible marketing, they sat by while others spread complete BS about Vista and they kept extending support for XP. - inactive, on 10/03/2008, -83/+169This is odd, because current hardware is easily sufficient to run Vista well, and I actually really think Vista is a major improvement over XP (loads of small improvements make for a much better system)
I guess it's just the awful rep that Vista has got since day 1 that psychologically puts people off.
I feel they're gonna go straight from XP to Windows 7, almost forgetting about Vista. - Kazbaeden, on 10/04/2008, -12/+96In no particular order:
New audio stack and new features like per appliction audio levels and speech recognition
New networking stack makes wireless network, file sharing, and per-network file sharing options much easier than in XP.
Superfetch, despite using RAM, is actually useful. When Photoshop and Word start instantaneously on a 1.2 GHz machine, thet RAM usage is well worth it.
Windows search is infinitely more useful than in XP
New driver model. For anyone who ever had a crappy nvidia driver bluescreen your XP machine, this is well welcome.
I could go on, but there's 5. - stonebear, on 10/04/2008, -13/+86Wasn't that the campaign slogan for Windows ME?
- bdfariello, on 10/03/2008, -31/+103The only way Windows will EVER be taken seriously again is if they learn from what they did wrong with Vista. For their next version of Windows, they're going to need to get beta testers, whatever it takes. Their next OS absolutely has to be bug-free and be compatible with all current hardware.
If they have a repeat performance, they might as well hang up the OS department and stick to Office and Xbox. - Sil369, on 10/04/2008, -4/+73i will never give you up
- Narrwald, on 10/04/2008, -11/+78I'm using Vista. Have been every day for over a year. I'm okay.
- noumuon, on 10/04/2008, -12/+71vista's gui is nice and smooth. your computer just sucks.
- dawpa2000, on 10/04/2008, -12/+68Vista Improvements:
New driver model (Way better than XP's)
New printer stack (Way better than XP's)
New audio stack (Way better than XP's)
New security architecture (Way better than XP's)
New interface (Way better than XP's but this is subjective, but come on, Aero is leaps and bounds ahead of the 'Fisher Price' look you people eloquently labeled XP)
New setup process (Way better than XP's)
New deployment process (Way better than XP's)
New diagnostic, monitoring and reporting program(s) (Way better than XP's)
New Windows Update (Way better than XP's)
New startup process (Way better than XP's)
New memory management (Way better than XP's)
New I/O tech (Way better than XP's)
New Media Center (Way better than XP's)
New parental controls (Way better than XP's)
New task scheduler (Way better than XP's) - WELLDOITLIVE, on 10/04/2008, -3/+58i will never let you down
- DontGiveADamn, on 10/04/2008, -50/+104Come on people, use Vista, it doesn't suck that bad.
- passedoutghost, on 10/04/2008, -2/+51@ExRe: I'm pretty sure XP does Hibernate.
- eedok, on 10/03/2008, -15/+64How do I do per application sound volume in XP?
- ExRe, on 10/04/2008, -28/+76Microsoft continually supporting XP is a large part of the reason Vista was a "failure". The other reason was horrible marketing.
Vista is by far the greatest OS for my use IMO, I've been using it since Beta 1 and never have had any issues which were not caused by horrible 3rd party drivers. Vista is much speedier once you get a decent system with more than 1GB of ram (I don't give a damned what you say about 1GB being too much, 4GB of DDR2 can be had for $40 or less, and 2GB of DDR or DDR2 can be had for $20), and Vista runs much faster than XP once you get a mid range system.
For the idiots who have been complaining about DRM in Vista, educate yourself.

- JepthaAxe, on 10/04/2008, -24/+64Upgrade to XP!
- afx1, on 10/04/2008, -6/+45not for this long, AFAIK
- Hollow5, on 10/04/2008, -20/+59I wish people would actually try vista them selfs before talking about it.
- wukillabee, on 10/04/2008, -16/+54I'm a PC
- TVarmy, on 10/04/2008, -6/+44The separate audio levels for each program are nice. I can't come up with 5, as I'm running Vista just because I'm too lazy to reinstall XP.
- compgeek, on 10/04/2008, -22/+55Vista hate imho is misplaced. I have been using a laptop with Vista for 18 months now and can count on one hand the number of hard resets and BSOD's I've had. Vista is VASTLY more stable than XP, I can now actually end processes without the entire OS crashing on me. I know this is running contrary to popular opinion but once again imho Microsoft got Vista exactly right. The few niggling issues there were were resolved by SP1 and let's face it people that bitch that Vista didn't run on their hardware really need to get with the times. any half decent dual core ( even the Pentium D's) with a couple GB's of ram and a half decent video card (ATI X1000 series or Nvidia 7 series and faster) can very very easily run Aero with all it's nice features turned on. I do think MS is being nice by letting people have an XP option for another 6 months but people really need to face that fact that XP won't be around forever and move on. People did this when XP first came out and Win 2000 still had a big hold. Oh well I guess time will tell what happens in this whole mess
- EggNogIceCream, on 10/04/2008, -1/+30Which is a Pc.
- jerrycan, on 10/04/2008, -10/+39What are your 5 most compelling Technical reasons (other than DX10) for running Vista over XP? Just wondering...
- staticneuron, on 10/04/2008, -2/+28Did i just read that someone said you cannot sleep and hibernate in XP?
- TVarmy, on 10/04/2008, -4/+29I'm a bit behind the times. What is Windows 7 going to offer that Windows Vista hasn't delivered?
- Sil369, on 10/04/2008, -1/+24u ruined it
- inactive, on 10/04/2008, -78/+101XP>VISTA any ***** day.
Vista shell sucks. Gui is choppy. Ack. - drgmdp, on 10/04/2008, -0/+22congrats, you answered a question nobody asked you
- Aeron, on 10/04/2008, -1/+23I'm a Mac, but I'm also a PC
- Katana314, on 10/04/2008, -3/+25The main thing is just that XP has no definite advantages. It's cheaper, and some systems can run it better, but Vista works fine.
- flip360, on 10/04/2008, -5/+26I decided to give Vista a shot a few weeks ago. I picked up a NV 9500GT 1GB Gfx card for ~$100, grabbed a Vista Ultimate ISO (Cracked), burned it to DVD, installed it on my old Athlon 64 single core, 2GB of RAM machine and it runs beautifully. I haven't had any problems whatsoever. I like the UI, and some of the "gadgets" for the sidebar are cool. Ultimate also includes Windows Media Center and allows me to easily stream to my 360 in the other room (that computer couldn't real time encoding TVersity). A friend gave me his copy of Halo 2 PC and it runs buttery smooth. I once again enjoy my tower. Were it not free (except for my long overdue graphics card upgrade)...I wouldn't have taken the leap and I'd still be talkin' ***** about Vista with everyone else.
- nwoolls, on 10/04/2008, -9/+28"But...but...but it uses more RAM!"
The obvious sign of the ignorant masses...
Caching does what? - Handonam, on 10/04/2008, -0/+19and dis-hertz you
- ExRe, on 10/04/2008, -2/+20You can't be so poor that you can't afford 2GB of ram.
http://shop2.frys.com/product/5527130
$15 for 2GB of DDR2 800.
I saw 2GB of DDR 400 for $20 a few days ago as well if you need old DDR. - threemagic, on 10/04/2008, -2/+20even stranger... I for one, DO NOT welcome our welcomers of performance-decreasing, drm-enforcing, overpriced, feature-thin overlords.
- pagodamedia, on 10/04/2008, -0/+17Amen!
- HarryRag, on 10/04/2008, -8/+25Why do you play your games in XP? After SP1, performance for virtually every game works just as well in Vista. Besides, while Direct X 10 may not offer that much more over DX9, it's still Vista exclusive.
- refreshers, on 10/04/2008, -1/+18I will never slow you down
- Jeffler, on 10/04/2008, -17/+34Vista isn't bad, I'm using it at the moment because I might as well transition sooner than later.
However, XP at this point is my all time favourite OS. - mpdid, on 10/04/2008, -0/+17I used to be one of you, but I decided to actually try it before commenting, and I quite like it.
- Khast, on 10/04/2008, -7/+24It's not that I don't like Vista....but I don't feel I should have to buy a new computer just to run the OS. My primary computer was made prior to Vista's release, and it can't even run Vista.
The computer falls within the "Minimum" requirements.... Maybe my next computer will have Vista....but I am not rushing out to buy something new, if the old system works just fine. (The computer before this, ran Windows 98se.)
I don't play games on my computer, so I don't need the latest, greatest hardware.... - Ev3nt372, on 10/04/2008, -7/+24If Vista is DRM protected / enforces DRM then it is doing a really ***** job at it. I would like for anyone who has used Vista here to post if they have actually run into these "Vista DRM problems". Also the hardware complaints fall upon deaf ears when a mere $225 spent on newegg will get you a processor, 2gb ram,and motherboard with onboard video capable of running TF2 on medium to highish settings on Vista! Is it really that hard to gut your case and replace those parts? I genuinely feel bad for ppl who buy rebuilt computers with Vista and a godly amount of ***** on startup slowing the machine down to a crawl even though it has 2GB of ram.(im looking at you HP & Sony)
- Projektorboy, on 10/04/2008, -0/+16The masses will be pulled kicking and screaming into the notion of realizing that less free RAM != performance hit. Vista has me curious due to its completely different take on RAM usage.
- chaoswings, on 10/04/2008, -14/+30Once again a case of a person using an OS for 10 seconds realizes it is "different" from what they are used to. FUD clouds their brain and they don't even take the time to look. Your argument only holds water if it was pre-SP1...that we can all agree was *****. After SP1 you have no right to complain.
P.S. No Vista will not work with your PC from 1996 they made that clear. - machocheese34, on 10/04/2008, -0/+16you transOS freak
- ethana2, on 10/04/2008, -2/+17I'm a Human Being.*
*Yes, I use Ubuntu**
