- jester55, on 06/07/2009, -17/+151Twitter sucks.
- mycutepetpics, on 06/07/2009, -5/+111Most people I know on Digg and on all other social sites, truly dislike "Twitcrap". But every news channel, magazine and even the front page of "Time magazine this past month, are constantly telling us that it's the bomb and the wave of the future. If most users never return after initially trying it out and many other daily "Diggers" also dislike it, then why all the hype from corporate America.
We should all be asking ourselves, why is "Twitter" being pushed down out throats lately? - SSPink, on 06/08/2009, -8/+54No. There, I just saved you having to read the article.
I can also save you from having to read another article in the future: "Will Twitter's popularity last?" No.
You can thank me later. - lnxfi, on 06/08/2009, -18/+57twitter can suck on my balls
- MarkyNouj, on 06/08/2009, -11/+47I have never gotten the concept of Twitter...
It's exactly like Facebook's status bar, minus all of the cool features that Facebook has.
Why have a Twitter? I have better things to do with my time than update my status every 10 min.
"11:04 - I'm going to the bathroom because I drank two cups of coffee instead of 1. LOLZ!
11:09 - OOOooooohh, I feel bad for Tommy cuz he went in the bathroom as I was leaving LOLAPALOOZA!"
dumb. - Suilenroc, on 06/08/2009, -1/+28Is twitter really that big?
Short answer: No.
Long answer: Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.
/dr.cox - SpeedSteamBoat, on 06/08/2009, -2/+28I think they've noticed that they're always one step behind when it comes to new tech crazes. For once they feel like they saw this one on the way and are totally HIP and on board with it. YEAH! Eventually they'll figure out it was them who manufactured the entire imaginary "craze." Twitter will tank on account of its horrible user retention and lack of a business model, and everyone will stop talking about all of the sudden.
- inactive, on 06/07/2009, -5/+29You have a point, it is almost sinister the way they are trying to sell us all on the idea.
- Networktwenty3, on 06/08/2009, -2/+25I may not have many friends, but the friends I do have don't twitter either, we can't figure out a reason to have it.
- noknockers, on 06/08/2009, -2/+23The boom was so big and hyped because nobody wanted to miss out on the next big thing, so everyone signed up so they could say 'yeah, I've had a twitter account since 2008', etc...
- inactive, on 06/08/2009, -2/+20Reminds me of the Second Life media spam.
- Mist0r_Wiggles, on 06/08/2009, -0/+16twitter is basically an outlit for famous/semi-famous people. the average user don't have any followers because they are a "nobody" and therefore their followers are limited. (unless you count their best friend Joe, and their mom) Twitter could be more useful, if they open up the feed more. Let there be a suggestions list on who to follow, or a section for "up coming stars". So far, only people with a set audience/fan-base can plug their twitter page to their fans to get more followers. But for the average user, it's somewhat completely useless. Unless you really want to document how many times you take a ***** in a day.
I'm a complete twitter newb, so if there is any mistake in my assumptions about twitter, then I'm sorry. I'm one of the guy that doesn't tweet, but created an account just to see the hype. - DirtyVicar, on 06/08/2009, -1/+16eh, what? Myspace is no longer the current fad?
- konahamaru, on 06/08/2009, -2/+14I joined twitter when Leo Laporte first started fawning over the service. It seems that the people the talk about it the most have a completely different experience then every body else since celebrities automatically get a certain volume of attention. Twitter is dead to me and i look forward to a time when i wont have to hear about it any more. It can stay for the celebrities ego for all i care.
- Cretius0, on 06/08/2009, -1/+11The simple answer to your last question is they get free advertising through twitter.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 06/08/2009, -1/+11Thank you later? I'll thank you now!
Thank you. - Cowboy1015, on 06/08/2009, -1/+11Twitter is a big fad that awaits its death in 2010.
- antdude, on 06/07/2009, -1/+11Digg, duh.
- therippa, on 06/08/2009, -2/+11I had a recruiter tell me that she thought Twitter would be the next Google. I laughed and hung up.
- mahadiga, on 06/08/2009, -0/+9Twitter = Spam
- inactive, on 06/08/2009, -7/+15i hate Twitter... let me bury this ***** first and get out of your way. carry on.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 06/08/2009, -1/+9Short Answer: Only in the media.
- frieddonuts, on 06/08/2009, -0/+8It's because unlike Facebook, it's public and intended for everyone to see. Facebook is a closed collection of millions of overlapping mini-networks. Though I was never able to get into "tweeting" or "twatting" or whatever they are calling it, it is quite remarkable to search for a keyword and see results pop up in real time.
- phosphite, on 06/08/2009, -0/+8Present Them.
- ElAmo, on 06/08/2009, -0/+8I think it has to do with old media trying to be new media. They've figured out that jumping onto the train after it's passed only leads to a faceful of dirt, so now they're trying to create their own "train" out of a dinky little coal engine.
Twitter is nothing special, but old media is trying to stay ahead of the wave so that they're for once hip. Unfortunately for them, Twitter is not a wave, but a stagnant pond. It's never going anywhere other than perhaps evaporating into thin air. - pineapplepaul, on 06/08/2009, -0/+7http://www.googlefight.com/index.php?lang=en_GB&am ...
- inactive, on 06/08/2009, -3/+10I setup a twitter account for my cousin for his salmon fishing charters. He keeps getting the same person following me w/ made up names 10x. Most of my followers appear to be spammers trying to sell me the next way to make $5000/month using twitter by growing my twitter followers? Just let me use it as an ADDITIONAL form of communication for those who like it.
- LotosDescendant, on 06/08/2009, -3/+10I don't think that Twitter is as horrible or as amazing as people make it out to be.
I don't think that Twitter is enormous, but I think there are a significant number of people using it regardless of these statistics.
Twitter's biggest problem is that it is trying to be bare-bones and simplistic. This may make starting out with it easy enough, but for continued use, it is too difficult to manage following more than a small handful of people. This is counter-intuitive to the point of the service and applications like Tweet-Deck or Twittangle have not really solved it.
@Replies also need to be fixed. It is too difficult to repost information with the 140 cap or carry on/ follow conversations between people. You should be able to @reply to a specific Tweet so that everyone can follow the conversation. @replying to only the person, as it is now, makes it hard to see what the @reply refers to if the other person has posted many tweets.
However, the search and trending topics have been improving a lot recently. - misterrock, on 06/08/2009, -0/+7as someone who documents my number of *****/day, i still find twitter lame.
- evergrim, on 06/08/2009, -1/+6Just came to say I buried this, like I do with all twitter related articles on digg.
- mycutepetpics, on 06/08/2009, -0/+5@ speedsteamboat
"For once they feel like they saw this one on the way and are totally HIP and on board with it. YEAH! Eventually they'll figure out it was them who manufactured the entire imaginary "craze.""
Well said! Clearly explains all the overrated hype.
Thank you very much. - ell0bo, on 06/08/2009, -0/+5it's just like the "economy is getting better".
Ok, when my friends start finding jobs the economy is getting better, don't try to tell me losing 300k jobs is a good ***** thing.
News agencies are becoming too used to telling us what they want us to know, instead of reporting actual facts anymore. - inactive, on 06/08/2009, -0/+5I just came to say I dugg you because people who twitter need burying. Literally. Including "celebrities".
- mycutepetpics, on 06/08/2009, -0/+5"Twitter is dead to me and i look forward to a time when i wont have to hear about it any more."
Couldn't agree more with you. - Elranzer, on 06/08/2009, -0/+3Twitter seems to be one of those things the corps are trying so hard to shove down our throats, but we just aren't buying it. Are you sure Twitter isn't some rich guy's pet project who has enough money to advertise it?
Seems like Twitter is a way of keeping tabs on us, and by our own hand at that. - jakem1, on 06/08/2009, -0/+3Isn't the ability to keep track of that guy who married that Demi woman who was married to Bruce Willis enough of a reason?
- sgtbutterscotch, on 06/08/2009, -0/+3Haha, you what's also funny? I keep finding random niche sites and finding a link that says tweet this. Like a couple of minutes ago I was just looking up smoothie recipes and on the first website I found, under each recipe was a link so I could tweet it.
- Mudcrutch, on 06/08/2009, -1/+4I had hoped using "b4" instead of "before" fad had ended.. guess not.
- inactive, on 06/08/2009, -0/+3Its just like when all the media outlets were screaming about :"The Blair Witch Project" the movie made popular by the internet - yet most geek sites / forum etc I followed back in the day couldnt give a ***** about it (slashdot briefly covered it and I do mean brief, not a OMFG movie = 4TW).
On a side note, the creator of Twitter made himself look like the biggest ***** ever on the Colbert Report "Yes Stephen, It makes me very powerfully *raises eyebrows* to have all these people following me *smug smile*" - mycutepetpics, on 06/08/2009, -0/+3El, I had the same feelings but didn't wanna share my "tin foil hat" theory. Lol
Soon their will be a twitcam, twitcell and the god oll twitGov. Lol - OneFreespirit, on 06/08/2009, -0/+3We don't very much like your style, Mister...
- inactive, on 06/08/2009, -1/+4You don't need to blog/follow, Twitter can be used as a search engine dedicated to current public opinion. This is actually a very cool feature and has many practical uses.
- cyrix, on 06/08/2009, -0/+3Twitter reminds me WAY too much of the movie August. Well, ya know, minus David Bowie of course.
- paloooz, on 06/08/2009, -1/+4Haha, Cowboy1015 edited his comment. It originally had "it's" ...
So suck my *****. - gndoss, on 06/08/2009, -0/+2I think what you (and most of the others who have responded on topic) have missed is the belief that Twitter is all about celebrity, corporate marketing, or up-to-the-minute information on the culinary or waste disposal habits of others. I would estimate the most famous person I follow is Tim O'Reilly (O'Reilly Publishing) who happens to tweet a whole lot about tech. As a Linux sysadmin, that is right up my alley.
Other types of people/entities I follow are the SANS Internet Storm Center and others in Internet security. Yes, I am subscribed to their RSS feeds, but Twitter allows me to quickly see their logo when it appears in my Twitter stream and pay attention, as opposed to switching to my feed reader, finding their feed, checking if something is actually happening or not, etc. I am able to get information much faster with Twitter to react to possible security threats. This is not a trivial use.
Also, I do some SugarCRM development. I have found several others on Twitter who do the same and have gained a good amount of information and ideas by paying attention to others who do what I do. Same thing goes for bash scripting. I have found several bash tricks I was unaware by following the right people/entities.
Unless I personally know someone I would never follow anyone who tweeted a bunch of rubbish all day long. Even then there are Twitter clients where you can set different levels of people you follow so the important information remains in one stream, the junk goes in another stream. Now I don't have any guilt about not following a family member or friend, but can still safely ignore their crap.
As for suggestion lists, the Twitter community has established #followfriday. Search for that hash tag and see if anyone who shares your interests have suggested someone, check their recent tweets, if nothing interests you move on. Or search a site like wefollow.com where Twitter users list their interests.
By the way, there is no doubt there is a lot of crap on Twitter. It is on the Internet, after all. I have people follow me all the time who have 568 followers, and are following 984, but who have never posted once. Yeah, it sucks that people are abusing it, but no one is forcing me to follow them back. - amvickers, on 06/08/2009, -0/+2i think TWITter is a mildly entertaining exercise, but now that facebook has essentially the same service coupled into their social network it's just as rewarding. The tweet is an exercise in narcism, because tweeting is only worthwhile if people read and react to what you are saying, creating chains of communication. While facebook is the same way, twitter feels barebones in comparison to having a personal profile with pictures, notes, posted links, and other things to check out.
- daVinci1980, on 06/08/2009, -0/+2Jon Stewart said it best on The Daily Show (I'm paraphrasing a bit, forgive me). Twitter is just a means for politicians, celebrities and businesses to provide more inane chatter and appear more involved with their constituents, fans, and customers while not actually giving them any real information or investing in their relationships in any meaningful way.

To fit into a tweet, "twitter is dumb and should die." - milkmage, on 06/08/2009, -0/+2twitter is like anything else on the internet. garbage in, garbage out.
it used to be cool/useful in the beginning. as it gets more popular, the ***** quotient gets higher.. not unlike digg. remember how much better digg was 3-4 years ago? - ThirdPrize, on 06/08/2009, -0/+2Originally with Twitter you and your mates would only really follow each other and come friday night you could tweet "going for a pint, anyone else coming?" or "whats star trek like?" and your mates may reply. It was a casual social thing. Now they are after the big bucks it is all about numbers and followers. Like FaceBook and MySpace, they have scaled hugely over the last few years but their original purpose has been greatly diluted as well.
- Elranzer, on 06/08/2009, -0/+2By the amount of Twatspam we get daily, the removal of shouts in favor of twatting and putting a twatter icon right in the Diggbar failure... it seems that way.
