- ziffel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Yes, but does Opera have those nifty extensions? My Firefox is way too personalized for me. And even if I did convert to Opera I'd still feel a hole in my heart."
That's exactly my feeling as well. I love Opera, it was what pulled me away from that POS IE6, but Firefox and it's extensions have allowed me to have my own personal browser. I'll certainly be giving Opera 9 a look though. Everyone remember, this isn't Opera vs Firefox. It's Opera AND Firefox vs IE6 and it's 85% market domination. Go alternative browsers, go! - Jasoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Next time link to the root of the Snapshots section so Mac and Linux users don't have to stare at the Windows page.
http://snapshot.opera.com/ - Lynn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Check out the Acid2 web standards test with Opera 9 then with Firefox.
http://www.webstandards.org/act/acid2/test.html
Opera 9 is almost perfect. - mighty_mouth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2redguy, from what I have read, Opera 9 has better backward compatibility/quirks mode than previous versions of Opera.
And for those people that want extensions on Opera, you may want to do a little searching on Google or the Opera forums. The capabilities of most FF extensions can be emulated by Opera panels/userjs files/or other Opera features. For example, check out http://userjs.org/ - bonzooznob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I hope this gets fixed! Opera will not be successful until it is.
Javascript alert(), confirm(), and prompt() do not handle line wrapping, or line feeds, in the message text. (see screenshots below)
Opera: (fails miserably)

Firefox: (same function call, works fine)

MSIE? yeah, it sucks too, just not quite as bad:
http://img467.imageshack.us/img467/8849/msieprompt3lf.png
MSIE has other issues too though... the prompt dialog appears way off in the top left of the screen, where as all other dialogs appear (as expected) in the center of the screen.
Hopefully IE7, and Opera 9, will both fix these issues. - houseofgeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Opera is better than Firefox in ways just as Firefox is better than Opera in it's own ways. Me? I use them both. Look at it this way. If Opera is striving to be better than Firefox and Firefox is striving to be better than Opera, who looses? Nobody, except IE. And IE might even get better because of the heat from Firefox and Opera.
- tribalsun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2oops hehe, ^^ opera:config ^^ :-)~
- worbd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Kamael says: "The default Opera UI is too bloated IMO."
gdogg says: "maybe if opera cleans up its mess of user interface, ill use it more"
I don't get Firefox fanboys going on about Opera's UI. Have they actually tried the latest version? It's got one more button than Firefox in the address bar and FEWER top level menus. How is this a "mess of user interface?" How is Opera's UI bloated?
Bah, Firefox fanboys...
bonzooznob: "I hope this gets fixed! Opera will not be successful until it is."
LOL! Yeah, Opera won't be successful until it fixes an obscure problem some random guy on a web site decided to bring up... ;) - tempusrob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm an avid FF user but I like Opera and encourage its use. I consider myself a FF advocate, but I don't care what browser you use as long as it isn't IE ...
- Kamael, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The default Opera UI is too bloated IMO. Sure, you can change it, but it should be like IE or FX...if you want something, add it.
- snapcase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Since when was Firefox hard to stick with in the first place? Firefox is still the best browser as far as I'm concerned. I've tried most browsers out there including Opera and none of them compare. I love how the description of this article tries to make it sound as if Firefox is rapidly losing massive numbers of users.
- Raider007, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2sweet, i've always preferd Opera...been using it for a couple years now, i tried Firefox when it was the new hotness, but i think it's overrated... Opera > Firefox
- BlitzPig_Sal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Opera has killer RSS support, detecting RSS links and showing you an icon in the address bar. The display of the feeds is the same as Opera's email interface, very intuitive and easy to manage.
Firefox should ditch the live bookmarks and go with RSS support that is more like Opera's and other RSS readers. - RichCoder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"maybe if opera cleans up its mess of user interface, ill use it more"
Opera is the only browser that allows for total UI customization. If you don't like something about the UI, change it. - dohtem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1redguy, you should report it to Opera. Might get fixed.
I tried using this yesterday. Pretty dam impressive but I downgraded to 8.5 because it took a while to load certain pages. And when I use the fast forward feature to go thru images on a site, If i go back to return to the first page, it kinda freezes up for 2 seconds. That got too annoying so I switched back. Hopefully this will be cleared up in the final release. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cant wait for opera 9 final, I wish I could get all the people who dont know anything about computers to use opera instead of IE.
- fighto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1holy sh**! They fixed what has kept me off of opera. The rendering is great!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One year ago, I simply hated Opera because it was a paid product when everyone else was totally free.
Today I only use IE in a "have to" situation. Otherwise its FF 100%. But the more I use Opera, the more I really like it. To be totally honest, I have always really liked it.
But lets face it. There will never be a "perfect" browser. Just like there will never be a perfect stereo, car, computer, network, girlfriend, life, blah. One size does NOT fit all.

I personally prefer Firefox for it's extension capability, but using Opera is very pleasant too. Besides, they both have wonderful rendering engines now, and that makes every web developer very happy. - rimco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I absolutely LOVED Firefox when it came out. I had tried Opera years ago before they charged for it and never really like it. Lately, Firefox has been acting very weird, so I tried Opera. I have been so impressed that I now use only Opera on both my Windows and my Linux partitions.
- Ruffy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"He meant changing the order of the toolbars (e.g. move the personal bar above the address bar) which can't be done in Opera and is pretty annoying for an otherwise very customizable browser."
Yes You can, the the entire UI Is customizable.

""the wand" is a toy. that's why i need roboform support. sorry, i won't have weak form-filling functionality coupled with a lack of encryption. if opera were to support roboform - as IE and Firefox do already - it would be the perfect browser for me."
The Wand, the entire user profile can be password protected and encrypted.
"They don't know any better
They still think security through obscurity is best
Never tried firefox
Do not believe in the power of opensource
Lack any real computer skills
Only use the internet for viewing porn and simple social networking
Does not run linux and is not likely to anytime soon"
You sir are a fool
1: I've tried Every browser out there
2: The Security is provan, the opera team releases timely updates. Firefox has been provan to be unsecure recently with major flaws.
3: I've tried firefox many times. and have the latest beta installed right now. I rarely use it.
4: Or don't care, Your "opensource" has major bucks and usability flaws
5: I hold Many certifications and work as a Security Analyst/Consultant for many Fortune 500+ Companies
6: You mean theres porn on the internet!! OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG WHY DIDNT ANYONE TELL ME!
7: Opera's been on linux for a LOOONG Time, if you mean the user. I have 8 Linux boxes, 2 BSD, 2 Sunsolaris boxes in this house.
So in closing kindly STFU N00b. You know not what you talk about. - timbtwisted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You know I've spent time with both and I can honestly say after all these years I still don't like opera that much. Don't get me wrong it's a great browser and all but little things about it just annoy me. I'm not going to get into them because really it's all preference. Both are great browsers but I think I'llstick with open source.
- thejman106, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1opera is by far the best browser out there. the only reason I like firefox is because it led to opera being ad-free.
- nymphetamine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1so whens opera 9 comin out? im hella lookin forward to this now.
- mighty_mouth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ziffel: Opera can do 90+ tabs! hehehe
@rm999: You can add support for adblocking features in Opera, just like you can in FF. See http://nontroppo.org/wiki/OperaAdblock - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ah, the power of managed, goal-oriented in-house development.
- rm999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1once adblock is built into opera (something that is compatible with adblock filters) i will think about switching to it.
- matthewsnape, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Opera is brilliant, but no for beginers. The problem is that when an unexperianced user tries to use it they think the replay button is the back button. This is a real problem and will put people off.
- anastrophe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Erukian - roboform has been downloaded 5 million times. IE supports it. Firefox supports it. it's not a security issue. hell, it's silly to suggest it's a security issue - it's a security enhancement. it stores passcards encrypted, in any of about six different encryptions.
- Maajid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The list of standards compliant features in the latest preview release of Opera 9 makes sticking with Firefox even more difficult."
Very true and I say that even with Opera 8.5 -- don't get me wrong I love firefox, the whole movement but opera is becoming harder and harder to surf the web without. - Ilkka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Where's opacity?
- portis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I used to think opera kicks ass...heck I even bought 2 copies of it. But after using Firefox with all those extensions, no way am I going back.
FIREFOX > opera
Until opera get's extensions, that's the way it is going to be. - xaph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I know so many people who wouldn't care if their browsers were standards compliant or not. Or even know if it were.
I would care, but still, I don't know if I would want to convert to Opera. I'm happy with my Firefox. - rockmanac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I tried Opera when it went free... I gave it a good 3 weeks.. I switched back to FireFox. There are too many websites out there that have issues with Opera plus I couldn't figure out how to personalize it as much as I can FireFox. And, where are the extentions?
-A - iindigo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1IMO both Opera and Firefox are ugly-assed on the Mac. They both do a horrible job in fitting into the Mac GUI, as they feel more like badly transplanted Windows programs (ick!!). I'll stick with Safari and Camino until those two get their act together on the GUI for the Mac versions.
- miccet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Im a fanboy, firefox all the way. I just love the open way and the extensions make it MINE.
- TokenUser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Was it ever borked? Never had an issue with MSN (except when MS where being asses), Hotmail, Yahoo, GMail, or google.com/ig - I guess when you are the most STANDARDS COMPLIANT BROWSER things like that generally just work.
- Rounin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Has the inability to log into Hotmail been fixed?
- Sabotage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Use a useful link - http://snapshot.opera.com/
Not everyone uses windows - comrade693, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Might I point out that the Acid 2 test is by no means a standards test? While it does have many things that are for standards, it also has things that are not standards that can be considered a "developers wish list".
- nacs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Is Opera 9 what Firefox 2 should be?"
No. Firefox is better. ;-) - dan1el, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I made a mistake. Only parts of the engine is rewritten. :)
- dan1el, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To the people who are talking about REGRESSION:
Opera 9 has a REWRITTEN rendering engine, built in mind to minimize regressions.
They could have completed the ACID2 test with the Presto engine in 8.50, but they would have lots of regressions.
Read here for more information about Opera and the ACID2 test:

http://weblog.timaltman.com/category/opera.html?from=10 - gunbuster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Opera is nice. Firefox is nice. And for those of you using it, that's just great. For those of us who still have to deal with an 85% browser market share that is still IE. It's *Yawn*. Opera 9, 10 and 11 don't change the fact that my day to day is still geared around a borked browser. You know what really sucks? Even when IE7 comes around and is supposedly more 'standards-based'... we'll still have to support all the people who still hit us with IE6.
Damnit. Life sucks. I'm just grumpy today. No really, Opera is cool. I have both FF and O installed. Love 'em both. - DD32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually i personally have never found any FF Extensions which were useful to me.. Oh wait, yes there is one, LiveHTTPHeaders, I'd love to be able to look into requests and what-not, simply because i do alot of reverse-engineering with forms and whatnot, however most people wouldnt have to.. and personally i just use a proxy i wrote to allow me to edit all http requests or let them go through.. 5minute job in VB.
But what Extensions do people REALLY need in opera? - maloney_633, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i have opera and firefox on my USB 32MB thumb drive and i love it.
i prefer opera to firefox - anastrophe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"the wand" is a toy. that's why i need roboform support. sorry, i won't have weak form-filling functionality coupled with a lack of encryption. if opera were to support roboform - as IE and Firefox do already - it would be the perfect browser for me.
pity. - user, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All this talk about Firefox versus Opera and no mention of the wand? THAT is probably my favorite feature of Opera. And then FF's extensions kicks Opera's ass in that department. Too bad both browsers can't have both.
- decile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"The default Opera UI is too bloated IMO. Sure, you can change it, but it should be like IE or FX...if you want something, add it."
Not in 9. Its a bar for tabs and a bar for nav buttons/address field. Much much better. - fernyb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This version of opera now fixes the lag it used to have.
