- porplem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Beaten up by a three-year-old. What a shame.
- pixelmatrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Cheers to the worlds CRAPPIEST browser!!
- nacs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2aristotle--WRONG! Try again.
It was built on Mosaic. If you go to the about dialog in IE you can still see the copyright there.
From wikipedia:
"Internet Explorer is derived from Spyglass Mosaic, an early commercial web browser. In 1995, Spyglass Mosaic was licensed by Microsoft in an arrangement under which Spyglass would receive a quarterly fee plus a percentage of Microsoft's revenues for the software."
M$ got the codebase promising a split of profits then gave it away to screw over Mosaic's developers. - BETA7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1IE is crap end of discussion, only thing its good for is windows updates...
- jakebechtold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Who cares about IE? Get Firefox!!
- MacSawD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, congrats on getting old.
And dusty. - TokenUser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Firefox and IE are cousins. From the "About" box in IE:
"Based on NCSA Mosaic. NCSA Mosaic(TM); was developed at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign."
... and Mosaic spawned Netsape which begat Mozilla which spat out Firefox. - compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Let's kill it on it's 10th birthday. It'll be good for us all, I swear.
- aristotle1990, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Keep in mind, IE was built from scratch. Firefox is based on the Netscape browser, which is in fact older than IE.
- superwick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+119 years old, yet immature as far as being up with standards. The IE dev team can't even grasp the thought of being standards-compliant.
- MarkByers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree with superfluous:
The majority of people that use Internet Explorer do so because it is preinstalled on their computer. If any other web browser was preinstalled, they would use that instead. How many non-technical people would *deliberately* switch to Internet Explorer, if they already had Firefox or Opera installed on their computer? Most people wouldn't care and just use the one that is installed (even if they don't like it!)
The majority (90%? more?) of Internet Explorer's users (and Windows users in general) don't care about software. I can hear them now saying: 'What's a web browser?' - Sixcolors, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I thought at first they meant that the "latest" version of IE for the Macintosh was turning 10. Silly me.
- fuRy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1in other news my IE broke a while ago and i have never cared. the end.
- Superfluous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1to answer a previous question, i believe jkfan87 means in terms of market share. What you guys forget is that we are small niche in the internet community but we are growing rapidly. Most internet users dont know the difference between firefox, netscape, mozilla, or IE so they just go with whats default on their system because it works for them which is IE. So in all fairness, yes IE dominates the market but if the trend continues more and more computer users will become knowledgable and make switches.
- xs10shul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Makes me feel old. I still remember using Gopher and the like. When it first came out, it blew the doors off of Netscape. Slam IE all you like, youngins, but it did a pretty good job back in the day.
- superwick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"back in the day" is not today.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone have Internet Explorer 1.0 for download? Or do I have to install Windows 95 on an old system?
- porplem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I meant Firefox is better, jkfan87. Microsoft includes IE with Windows, so of course more people will use it.
- superwick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0whoops... I meant to type "10"... stupid dark room....
- recover82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"developed at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois"
UofI ...hells yea. - patrickweber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://oldversion.com/program.php?n=msie
- StephnDolenc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2ie = g4
- motionblur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0IE will continue to be completely unuseable until tabs are finally released with v7. Even then....
- StephnDolenc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1they're equal in the way that they both suck
- Magnum2066, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"ie = g4"
Amen. - kmilden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not even a teenager and already over the hill.
- Firefly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0TokenUser, excellent point. As Jack Nicholson would "can't we just all get along?" ;) I wonder if this is a shot back from yesterday's "Firefox turns 3" Digg story.
- geoboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hugo, you have to be joking. Only an ignoramus would defen IE. Spyware has been found to install itelf into IE without the user even knowing it through exploits in the browser. Are you aware of Microsofts honeymonkey project? They've found a number of disturbing facts about how spyware is silently installing itself, and those vulnerabilities are STILL not fixed. Any other responsible company would fix those exploits pronto.
- IraqManiac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"ie ***** me over to many times" - good call!
I remember once I just got done installing xp on someone's computer and the first thing I did was try to find a valid product key and I went to some BS website and it did some exploit and ***** everything up, had to pretty much within 3 minutes I had to reformat/reinstall xp again, so for now on the first website I go to will be getfirefox.com - compu73rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't see why people say Firefox is crap. How is it crap compared to Opera? They're extremely similar lmfao.
- hugo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, it's amazing, Firefox Fanboys as far as the eye can see. LOL
75% of internet users use IE, the only ones that screw up their computers are the idiots that don't know how to stay away from porn and warez sites. And to suggest that Firefox is not susceptible to spyware is completely ignorant. Personally, I started using IE when it was at version 3.x, I have never had a problem that was easily repaired with minutes. I guess I'm just smarter than the 18% of people that use Firefox that claim IE "broke" their computer. - mercury81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0lovely now hurry up and release IE 7.
- tim1986, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And nobody cares.
- terrya64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I used Firefox until I got ie7 beta 1 and haven't used Firefox since.Only thing I liked about Firefox that ie didn't have was the tabbed browsing. Now with ie7 tabbed browsing is finally a reality.
- jholdaway, on 10/12/2007, -0/+06 versions of IE in 7 years.. .. 5 steps up for windows in 7 years (95, 98, 98se, 2000, XP)* ... and nothing for 4 years. I hope Vista makes up for the lag.
(* I didn't include ME as a true OS step) - hugo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0meant to say "I have never had a problem that wasn't easily repaired with minutes"
where is the damn edit button digg? - stickyboot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its 10 and it really shows it's age.
- RMoore08, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and i would care why??? IE SUCKS!!!
- hugo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Geoboy must be one of the idiots I was talking about that has to visit porn and warez sites everyday and isn't smart enough to figure ot why he keeps getting spyware. Only an ignoramus would blame a web browser for all of his spyware problems. The problem is usually the user not the browser.
- dbr_onix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Isn't there a "Browser War Baiting" report?
These really annoy me, it's about "IE is 10 years old", not "Flame IE"..
The story isn't related to Firefox, and even less so than "Opera is better than Firefox", your two steps of topic ffs..
Stay..on..the..f***ing..topic
- Ben - bitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Your company might be microsoft if it..."
Is not responsible.
Does not concern itself with little things like the customers.
Kisses the media companies arse.
Is always in court, accused of monopolizing and violating licenses with other companies.
Lacks quality products.
Still has major piracy problems regardless of whatever entirely futile efforts to prevent them.
Lacks any good sense whatsoever.
Sucks more than the g4!!
-- sorry couldn't help myself, just had to post this. - Prodigy1990, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0ie ***** me over to many times
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0HAHAHA
I remember the line from the movie Pirates Of Silicon Valley where Steve Jobs says to Bill Gates "But we have the better product!!!" and Bill replies "It doesn't matter! Don't you understand that Steve" I guess Bill is the one who truly never understood and yes indeed it does matter. For if you look at the way users view both companies and their OS' it seems they agree with Steve Jobs. - Paul_Francini, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0posted on Wednesday, August 24, 2005 1:12 PM
welcome to last month - xs10shul, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Superwick: So bloody what? The story is a retrospective on a piece of software that has endured for a long time. The more inappropriate response is to bring up the current state of IE's features.
- Bluezdood, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0WGASA?!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Firefox is UTTER CRAP compare to Opera! Kill IE and FireFOX, so everyone can use Opera.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0FireFox is utter crap!!!!!!!!!! Use opera!!
>> - G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0IE 6 is still worst then IE 1....
