- rousehouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Kudos to both Microsoft and Mozilla. Take note, fanboys; if they can agree, why can't you?

From the article:
I’m excited to announce that we’re adopting the icon used in Firefox. John and Chris were very enthusiastic about allowing us (and anyone in the community) to use their icon. This isn’t the first time that we’ve worked with the Mozilla team to encourage consistency between browsers, and we’re sure it won’t be the last.
Now Dewayne lets analyze this a little bit. They are excited they are adopting an icon, not inventing, so they are already acknowledging that this is not their invention. Then we have the reference to John and Chris being very happy and enthusiastic to let them use the Icon. John and Chris being used as a familiar name, referring to the developers of said icon.
Now it appears they have A) Said this is not our Icon and B)John and Chris are letting us use it Yay them!
Due to the fact i is a blog and not an offical press release it is very simple shorthand thanks dude! You rock!
Sounds like they gave them credit indeed. - butlershouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1100% assurance that when this appears in IE and I show a user Firefox ... they will say .. " Oh wow its just like the IE icon " ...
Sigh... this is not good its another Extend Embrace and Screw over... - M$Whore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like to see the browsers work together. Now, can we finally get CSS2 selectors and hover on all elements.
- panic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Microsoft has definitely been doing a lot of small things over the past couple of years to gain respect of the industry, and this is just one more step. It's great to see Microsoft collaborating with other people for nothing more but the end-users best interests. I'm impressed. I look forward to IE7 coming out also.
- primehifi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22.3 years till microsoft claims they invented it on their own.
- headzoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That makes sense. Look at DVD players from 50 different companies, and they all have the same standard DVD logo. The same goes for CD players, etc. It would be nice to see the IT industry adopt a similar practice.
- Mist0r_Wiggles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2wow, this is like the devil going to God asking if he can use the cross symbol for the spread of anit-christ.
- bobo7795, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If M$ and Fire Fox made sweet love would their love child be Opera or Konquer?
- dismorfo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool!!
- LouisC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I really couldn't care less about this, but I dugg it anyway since it's still pretty cool.
- Orguss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Even Opera has "RSS" the same way as Safari too.
- ElectricGrandpa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"What a bunch of pussies. I swear, you can't even come up with your own icon. Man. If this is their latest stab at trying to increase their hegemony...consider it failed. I am ebarrassed to use FF now b/c of this. Really. What other code are they going to steal, huh? The whole browser? Why not? ***** M$ really just toasts my oats.
GET BETTER AT MAKING SOFTWARE AND STOP RIPPING IDEAS. GOD."
Dude, Microsoft OBVIOUSLY could have had one of their many designers come up with a logo to use... but instead they INTELLIGENTLY decided to use the Firefox icon for consistency's sake. I say good for them. - Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now when do we get to see...
"IE7's browser engine: it's GECKO!"
...? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
They are also using the ICONS from KDE for SHUTDOWN and LOGOUT.
What a bunch of has-been hacks. - Tufriast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And actually Orguss, Opera's icon differs in size, richness, and shading.
- Tufriast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Quote Dash-2: First you say that IE doesn't go by standards and that firefox does so its better. But when Microsoft tries to standardize the RSS icon you say it bad? Sounds like you suck to much "coolness"...
Ok, and first and foremost Dash-2, if you are not allowed to change then you will die. Second, this is not a standard in any way, shape, or form. It's an icon. The W3C makes web standards so ALL users can browse the web effectively. There is no standard here, neither has one been ever established on a friggin' icon. It's pathetic they are trying to enforce a mythical icon standard. Pictures mean -dick- to a compotent user. Assuming someone is not competent is rather depressing. IF you ARE making this assumption, then you should not try and build software. People will learn how to use tools over a given course of time - this is fact.
Sticking to the same logic is much like walking around with one leg. You go in circles, and people laugh at you. Thus, I'm laughing at the IE7 devs. - FredB7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Who cares?
Please stop the "MS is is collaborating with Mozilla" bs: They just took an icon! - ricodued, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome! This is a good move on the parts of Microsoft and Mozilla. Got a user who has to use Mozilla Firefox at work but likes IE7 at home? Some icons will be universal, so there's less to learn and generally less confusion, at least for RSS.
Good job Microsoft + Mozilla. - camtech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe they'll ditch IE and ship Windows with Firefox. That would be so cool.
- grayapple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Happy to see Microsoft kissing the open source ass... wow... that sounds SO wrong.
- wyngnut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I think we should make them give us FAT in exchange for use of the icon.
- FSFunky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Guys, it's an icon. AN ICON. Stop the "Oh Microsoft and Mozilla are making kissy-kissy in the bushes"-crap.
It's a frickin' ICON. - heydigital, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ever thought the two just pushing a standard? It's a nice icon.
- JAppi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why not just use "RSS" instead of some symbol?
- luke--, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Bizzaro World
- Singee15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Any time microsoft plays nice i think it is a good thing.
- nnonix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That won't happen, MS uses too much ActiveX and firefox doesn't support it at all.
In the same spirit, I'm going to build a house with no doors or windows so that I can say that my doors and windows are really secure. - MightyGiant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They stole the back button symbol too! Seriously, this doesn't matter at all.
- Aquinas315, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This doesn't come as a surprise. Microsoft has "adopted" (stolen) plenty of ideas from other companies over the years.
- tjp368, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't think Microsoft is softening up. This is the work of some of the employees, who probably contribute to open source on their free time. Although some employees are good at Microsoft, I don't think Microsoft as a whole is getting better.
- borderpatrol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"In other news, it was a cold day in hell today."
Bit frosty down there. but worth it.
"I think we should make them give us FAT in exchange for use of the icon." The linux community along with open soure would love that. It aint gonna happen, but would be cool. - Fryth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm still going to be cynical about this and say they only pulled it off because the higher-ups had no idea... :)
Romulans: "Does the Federation know about this plan?"
Picard: "No."
Romulans: "I like it already..." - bash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dash-2: its an icon, so it isnt really a standard.
but on that topic, microsoft has always done the "embrace, extend, extinguish" rule by (partially) adapting standards, extending it with new features that only they convienetly have, and lock everyone out (extinguish). thats why whenever microsoft adapts standards it can get scary, because its only a prelude to worse days. - tibe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Keep your friends close and your enemies closer.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0GOOGLE...MOZILLA...all the others...what else is new!
Just call them microcopy I think we need a site that just has thing that's Microsoft copys. - nbx909, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hit em with teh GPL jack...
- ProSam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A shiver just went down my spine! Whoah!
- positron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Microsoft prime directive: embrace, extend, eliminate
- tapo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Personally, I think this is a great idea on Microsoft's part, allowing users to identify RSS content regardless of the browser they use.
I wonder if Apple will follow through, and replace their RSS button with Mozilla's RSS logo as well? - gfreak49, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0now it will make it easier to switch to firefox ;-)
- MikeWeller, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0FOR THOSE that think MS can't come up with their own ideas... well they did:
http://blogs.msdn.com/rssteam/archive/2005/10/08/478505.aspx
This is ALL about standardisation, so they should be congratulated. - MajorOutage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0One-click to add RSS feeds in both Firefox and IE now? That's great. Now how about a one-click way to add a normal Favorite/Bookmark!?
- detrate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There is no way this could be coincidental: http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/8048/irony2hp.jpg
- trex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0excellent news; hopefully this paves the way for a common standard between web browsers
- Tufriast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Dude, Microsoft OBVIOUSLY could have had one of their many designers come up with a logo to use... but instead they INTELLIGENTLY decided to use the Firefox icon for consistency's sake. I say good for them."
Why is it intelligent to nab another person's labor on a technology that only 20% of the population uses? Could it be that a very LARGE portion of people that use Firefox make up that 20%? And could it be that trying to tap into that market to further your own media goals is wise? Yeah, cool.
But that doesn't make it right, salient, or for the sake of consistency in M$'s own point of view - just. It's like me taking a hammer, and giving people a plastic one as a simulacrum, and then stating for them to build a house. M$ suits people into the ground for mentioning their name, using their icons, or anything that relates to them - and then they go and do this.
Go look up what happened in the case of Windows Defender. The Aussie man who made that software is probably still crying his eyes out. Or, better go talk to the creator of Pulp Fiction. I'm sure he's still in litigation hell over a friggin' video game M$ decided to "borrow" from.
If intelligent moves are dishonest ones, count me among the dumb plebeians then. - soadman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not saying they stole it or anything, but couldn't Microsoft just make their own?
- theone3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"wow, this is like the devil going to God asking if he can use the cross symbol for the spread of anit-christ"
Yeh. If you take the whole thing religiously.
I.e. You have no life. ;) -
