- chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -13/+112digg isn't a news site it's a link dump.
- bat-21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+55Digg's dependability depends on the diggers. Unfortunately, too many people digg articles before reading them. This is why Digg needs a separate bookmark feature.
- IQ70, on 10/12/2007, -13/+56That story was incorrect, yet never marked as "Inaccurate" by Digg whose ability to become a dependable source of news is quite in jeopardy.
- azzageddi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+39I dug it down and marked it inaccurate. And thank goodness it was, too--I'm a long-time AVG user.
- Pudwhack, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29I watch in awe as more and more people digg the original story.
- azzageddi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Uh, "forcing everybody"? Is there some reason people should want to stick with an outdated version?
- Timbit42, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20@Agret
Security by obscurity is no security at all. - captinherb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21I was really surprised that it wasn't flagged as inaccurate. I've seen stories get flagged for using the word "too" when it should have been "to".
- sTiVo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Yes...Which also is free...
- antdude, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16I marked it as inaccurate too. I wonder how many votes to be inaccurate?
- hertzsae, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11You're not forced to. You upgrade at your own will, if you want updates.
- neuropsychguy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Wow! 1400 Diggs. It was in the 700s when I marked it inaccurate.
- ICSU, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Before, the algorithm was abused and too many stories were marked inacurrate just because people did not agree with them. They changed it, and I haven't seen an inacurrate story since then.
- Pepper, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I don't see what the deal is with this, I mean, Microsoft does this. They end the support cycle for older products (98, 2000) after X years. Why can't Grisoft do the same? ;)
Oh, yeah. This is how the companies get you. They say support for your /old version/ will be discontinued next year, and conveniently have "buy" links on the same page. Figures. - dkoon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11Digg is not just SOCIAL BOOKMARKING SITE. Don't just put the stamp on it to make an excuse for people to post fake stories.
from Wikipedia.com
"Digg is a news website with an emphasis on technology and science articles. It combines SOCIAL BOOKMARKING, BLOGGING, and SYNDICATION with a form of non-hierarchical, democratic editorial control. News stories and websites are submitted by users, and then promoted to the front page through a user-based ranking system. This differs from the hierarchical editorial system that many other news sites employ."
Pure SOCIAL BOOKMARKING SITES are del.icio.us, furl.com ... etc. - striker1211, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Are you using the software in a server enviroment? Read the license. It is free for PERSONAL use. If you're using Windows 2000 SERVER for your PERSONAL use then... idk what to say, are you running a ***** domain in your house?
- middl3name, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I believe when I downloaded 7.5 a week ago it [the website] notified me that support for 7.1 would be discontinued in 2007.
- tuxracer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@chimeofdeath
Uh, ClamWin AV is specifically designed for Windows. - smcavoy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I guess they could make people who want to use the older version pay. But then what idiot would do that when the newer version is free?
- pendetim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Actually for *some* the free AVG will expire in 2007 when 7.1 is discontinued. Let me explain: I am using 7.1 on Win 2K3 server however when I tried to upgrade it failed as the free 7.5 is not permitted on a server. So when it expires, I will need to look for a new free AV for my Win 2K3.
And, yes, I use this server for personal use only.
Just my perspective from where I sit. - mpancha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4again, its a free product. And you're using their service free instead of paying for it. If you find such great use out of it, why haven't you paid for it to support them?
- twistymcgee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you are using an older OS and can't upgrade to 7.5 I would suggest Avast as an alternative free anti-virus application.
http://avast.com/eng/system-requirements-avast-home.html
It will run on PCs as far back as Windows 95 and NT 4. You have to register for a home user key but it's still free. I've been using it on my PC for a couple of years and I find it to be great. Pretty lightweight and unobtrusive. - pendetim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually I am running a domain in my house also but it is called "dnscluster" not "*****" domain. (:>P)
- neowolfwitch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Free Software != Open Source
As far as I can tell- AVG is not open source. I don't know why some of the comments have been treating it as-such.
I love AVG Free and have used it almost since the day it came out. - glitchbit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3of course he finds it financially rewarding I mean after the many hours of arguing the client must always realize they were wrong and next time they have another computer problem they are always going to clamor to using his services again so they can have another lecture on why using one license of Office 97 on those 40+ computers are illegal too!
I work for a computer shop and when we find an illegal install of software we normally don't say anything because
1) We are not the Piracy police
2) We're not Microsoft
3) It is not financially "rewarding" to do so
However if it is windows itself that is Pirated we will refuse to reload it if that is what needs to be done or if it needs windows updates we will not bypass the WGA for them. - moebidus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I like Avira Antivir PE Edition
http://www.free-av.com/ - Action123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1strange nobody digged this comment
- olik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Same here, and its a real shame, but the original story was accurate for me :(
- Mirag3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think AVG kinda has the right to decide which operating systems they support. Btw, I just don't know what to say if you're running Windows SERVER by CHOICE - there is just no reason for that. I'll send you a link to Ubuntu Linux for your domain - you'll never need another antivirus program.
God, willingly using windows for a server, what is this world coming to. - IamJAX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Please note that ClamWin Free Antivirus does not include an on-access real-time scanner. You need to manually scan a file in order to detect a virus or spyware." - Quoted from Home Page...
Well...this is an important feature that is missing...I don't want to manually scan each and every file when accessing it.... - Microdot, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3i still say we vote maggoty as digg ***** of the year. it takes a lot of stupidity to read the grisoft site, and still come to that conclusion.
- dkoon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4If digg is purely a SOCIAL BOOKMARKING SITE, it should let people Digg and UnDigg the post unlimited times. What kind of BOOKMARKING doesn't let you re-add your entry after you deleted it.
- FuzzyCat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1
Yes I'm running Win2k Server for PERSONAL use, and I am running a "***** domain" in my house. Why is it that shocking? - boaman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I use AVG 7.1 and got the 'discontinue' pop-up. It gives you the impression the 'free' part is being discontinued. I am so glad that 7.5 has a free version.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great news!
Integrate AVG AntiVirus Free into your Windows installation CD:
http://addons.wordpress.com/2006/11/01/avg-antivirus-free-75430/
The ultimate dream of every AVG fan:
have AVG AntiVirus Free installed since the first boot of Windows. - mpancha, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4so you're complaint is that you can't use free software?......
there's a flaw in the assumption that free means everyone can use it. Just look at Linux, its free, not everyone can make it work. - cgreentx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2If it were a "news" site then all relevant news stories would make the page and not vanish because they are unpopular. As for AVG, some of us wish the product were no longer free. At a minimum I would like to see them find a way to enforce that the Free edition was being used properly within its license. I'm tired of going into new customers and finding AVG Free Edition on 40+ computers and having to argue with them for hours on why that's illegal.

It is commendable that you would spend hours arguing with a new customer about the legality of the software installed on their computers. I assume of course that you argue with the same verocity when you see illegal installs of all sofware titles installed, such as Office or Windows. By the way, do you find arguing with your new customers to be financially rewarding? - fouldsy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Actually, I still think this story has missed the boat completely.
The story links to AVG Anti-Spyware Free, *not* the Anti-Virus product. Yes, support for Anti-Virus 7.1 Free is ending, and yes, there's an Anti-Virus Free 7.5 Free, but this is the correct link to the actual Anti-Virus product - http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5 - idiggeverything, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1OMG thanks for telling me, I wasn't sure what I was going to do!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Histrel, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I'm glad someone has tried to rectify the original Digg. It does look as though you will have to pay to upgrade your free AVG when you first get the notification but I soon found the FREE version. Thanks AVG - just off to do the rest of the family...
- muldy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Not free for amd64 bits though...
- ryan4477, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1thanks bro! get yourself a donut!
- Promantarius, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2All Microsoft licenses cost money, so they aren't losing anything by maintaining a piece of software for 5 years or whatever it is. Grisoft distribute AVG with a free edition, which isn't exactly going to pay their bills so they only want to maintain one free version at a time. Makes sense really :o
- sTiVo, on 10/12/2007, -9/+7Here's the original story that made the front page.
http://digg.com/software/AVG_Free_Anti_Virus_discontinued_in_Jan_2007_No_longer_FREE - Zotter, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Didn't the same kinda fiasco smear itself across digg's front page when AVG went from 6.x to 7.x??
Or was that Slashdot - I forget. In any case, this ain't the first time a 'news' site has screamed "they sky is falling" on AVG users.
Nice time for an 'algorythm' upgrade. day late, dollar short. - dreimanis, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1which proves.. nothing.
- FuzzyCat, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2
Well, have you considered that the new free versions no longer run on win2k server? I dutifully attempted the upgrade when I got the message only to be told that I can't have the free version...- the implication being that I'm a company and should pay - I'm not and if it's free for non commercial use then it should be free for non commercial use under whichever OS.
...and yet I can under [any] linux install... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I don't go to digg just to find interesting links - I go here to find news relavent to my interests that the mainstream media wouldn't make public...this kind of stuff is often available but not publicised widely, digg for now gives me that.
However I agree with the OP and some comments that the story was mis-leading and probably got on the front page needlessly - it should have died a death as it was a non-story.
Just my 2c -
